/forloveofchildren @FLOC_DC Alem Bekele, who initially received the Fred Taylor Scholarship in Spring 2013, celebrated progress in her postsecondary journey. With FLOC’s guidance and support, she successfully matriculated for two years at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and consistently earned above a 3.0 GPA, all while working and caring for her grandmother. She celebrated the completion of her studies at NOVA and was accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), a four-year institution. She is looking forward to continued success, with the goal of earning her bachelor’s degree and starting her career. FTSF SPOTLIGHT: ALEM A’Tyra Wilson first came to the FLOC Scholars Program when she was a freshman in high school. She was a shy young lady and it took her time to warm up to staff and other students. Originally, she was not planning to pursue a postsecondary degree but instead wanted to join the military. Eventually, program staff realized that her shyness stemmed from her being several years behind in reading and math. She struggled in high school and ended up repeating 9th grade multiple times. Because of the challenges and little support provided by her school, she considered dropping out. FLOC staff supported her mom in finding another, more supportive high school for A’Tyra to attend and connected her to the Neighborhood Tutoring Program’s services. This year, A’Tyra is at a new school, at FLOC three nights a week (for both NTP and Scholars), and has made the honor roll. When asked what she plans to do after high school, she said, “I want to go to college now. I am thinking about becoming a lawyer.” SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: A’TYRA For Love of Children Nicole Muryn Clement knew not long after moving to DC that she had to find a way to give back to the community where she now lives. Right away, Nicole could tell FLOC was different, as they wanted to do more than “homework help.” Nicole has continued to volunteer at FLOC because of the organization’s constant work at innovating how to teach students. She believes FLOC’s revamped math curriculum has made a positive difference in the ability of students to learn and progress. It’s this commitment that makes her believe in FLOC and continue to volunteer. Nicole has worked with a number of students in different age groups over the years. She is amazed by the perseverance and commitment the students have to learning, and she enjoys seeing students improve in their attitude and approach as they progress through FLOC’s programming. Nicole is proud that FLOC works to change the way students view learning. SUMMER CAMP One of the things that makes FLOC unique is our Outdoor Education Center. We give our students the opportunity to attend camp for free every summer. This year we piloted a “Non-Cognitive Camp” with our high school Scholars students. This three- day camp encompassed various workshops to develop non-cognitive skills such as optimism, perseverance, adaptability, and intellectual curiosity. From the post-tests and conversations with the students, we learned a lot about the program, and their feedback will help us create an even more powerful experience for future participants. The flint and steel fire-making activity, with its focus on developing perseverance, had the most impact on students. As we move forward, we will use more of these types of activities to develop non-cognitive skills to ensure quality programming. 76 students participated in summer camps
