Formentera is the smallest and most southerly of theBalearic Archipelago. It is 19 km long and lies three nauticalmiles south of Ibiza, with which it forms the ‘Islas Pitiusas’(Pine Islands).

This is a rural and unspoilt island.The way of life is friendly,unhurried and easy going; the wonderful colours of sunriseand sunset, the spectacular changing light, the sweet scentof the cool pine, rosemary and thyme and the infiniteshades of blue given off by the clear, warm sea as it laps thesoft, sandy beaches make the island an ideal retreat for arelaxing holiday.

Formentera enjoys a perfect Mediterranean climate: fineand delicate in Spring - explosive and bright in Summer witha cooling breeze which makes the tanning sun easy to take- mild and gentle in Autumn and temperate in the Winter.

The fascinating journey of 11 miles from Ibiza harbour toFormentera takes half an hour on one of the fastcatamarans. After leaving the coastline of Ibiza and sailingthrough a constellation of islets, lighthouses and watchtowers, the ferry passes the island of Espalmador with itswide expanse of beach and sheltered anchorage.

The port of arrival is La Savina nestling between the twolarge natural lakes of Estany Pudent and Estany d`es Peix.Here along the palm - fringed waterfront are shops, barsand restaurants overlooking the marina where you canwhile away the hours sampling some of the delicious, freshand wholesome local dishes and watching the fishing boats,yachts and ferries sailing in and out of the harbour.

In the south west of the island, watching over theimpressive cliffs of a wild, imposing peninsular and amongstfields surrounded by natural stone walls stands the majesticlighthouse of the Cap de Barbaria.

The La Molina lighthouse dominates the fertile plateau ofLa Mola which lies to the east of the island. Spectacularviews of Formentera and distant Ibiza can be enjoyed from

the road winding up to the village of El Pilar. This is thehome of farming folk who grow crops and tend theirvineyards in the traditional way. As artists and craftsmensell their creations, musicians play in the market held everySunday in the village.

The unassuming capital of Formentera is San Franciscowhich serves as the commercial and cultural focus of theisland, bustling by day but peaceful at night except duringthe fiestas held in the summer when music, dancing andspectacular fireworks bring the island folk together fortheir time-honoured celebrations.There is a good selectionof shops, restaurants and open air cafes tucked away inquiet corners or around the old fortified church of thischarming town.

San Fernando is a special village which is the home of thelegendary tavern known as Fonda Pepe. Here a friendlyatmosphere is generated from a mixture of ages,nationalities and a blend of cultures as locals and visitorsgather to talk until the early hours.

The sea around the island abounds in a rich variety ofmarine life.The diving centre,VELLMARI, offers a range ofhigh quality diving courses for beginners to experts. Allequipment can be provided and qualified English speakinginstructors look after you in a friendly and professionalway.Activities include: Marine Biology courses, night, wreckdives and underwater photography.All certificates awardedare internationally recognised.

The San Francisco Tennis Club welcomes guests, andtournaments are held regularly. The Club has two hardsurface courts which are floodlit to enable play in thecooler air of a summer’s evening. Equipment can be rentedfrom the club.

The island is an ideal base for sailing and windsurfing withsheltered bays, an inland lake and open seas offering a widevariety of sailing conditions.

The WET 4 FUN Water Sports School on the beach of Es Pujols offers windsurfing courses under expert instructionusing a wide range of boards for all levels of ability.

They also have dinghies and a fleet of Top Cat catamaransfor sailing enthusiasts. A special boat for parasailing givesyou the ultimate waterborne experience.

Saona Horses just outside San Francisco have a widerange of horses on which to trek into the countryside.They are quiet and calm and are well suited for novices andexperts. Chris will arrange any type of ride and provideinstruction as required. His programme of hacks takes youalong beaches, through woodland and across the salt flats.Adjacent to the stables is a large riding and jumping area.

Other activities organised include: picnics, sunset andmoonlight rides and barbeques.

With Formentera’s characteristics of few hills and acomprehensive network of paths and tracks, the ideal wayto explore the island is by bicycle. This enables you topeacefully visit areas which would otherwise pass unseen.

Car and scooter hire is also available through our office inEs Pujols.There is a bus service on the island and a regularferry service to Ibiza and to the beautiful nearby island ofEspalmador, both departing from La Savina.

It is possible to enjoy many forms of music on the island,either provided by local musicians or by visiting groups and bands.

Several concerts are held each year and music plays a largepart in celebrating the many fiestas. In the summer it ispossible to enjoy flamenco, classical guitar and piano,choirs, rock and blues groups,Catalan music and jazz bands.

The atmosphere generated by this unique blend of musicand tradition is a magical experience.

The island offers good conditions for running along coastaland country tracks or quiet paths.

There are some lovely walks on the old Roman roadclimbing up La Mola from Es Calo or easier terrain throughthe pine groves which cover a large part of the island.

Formentera offers the opportunity to discover solitarycoves, explore hidden caves and stroll along ancient pathsleading to windmills and watch towers.

The island provides a challenge for artists andphotographers to try to capture some aspect of thelandscape - the fig and pine trees, fields, plants, or a rusticfarmhouse. The colours and light are brilliant, defyingreproduction, but inspire the effort of attempting to do so.

I am delighted to say that we now have a superb collectionof oil paintings, water colours and photographs gracing thewalls of our office, sent to us by talented guests.

A Board of Environment has been established to control allecological matters on Formentera.

The geology, flora and fauna are so unique that much of theisland has been declared a Natural Area of Special Interestand is protected by National Park laws.

The island provides an important resting point in SouthernEurope for migrating birds. Flamingoes once nested nearthe waters of the lakes which are the home of a widevariety of species including falcons, seagulls, plovers,herons, cormorants and the little black-necked zampullin.

The Patronat Municipal de Turisme is an Associationestablished to safeguard the quality of the island whilsthelping the visitor to enjoy its natural beauty. They haveproduced a brochure with information about a wholeseries of by-ways called Green Tours.They can be followedon bicycle or by foot making it possible for you to admirelandscapes of sky and sea and enjoy a close contact withnature in the beautiful countryside.

We are proud to be the only UK member of thisorganisation dedicated to preserving this unique islandparadise.

There are many magnificent beaches on Formentera where it is possible to sunbathe and relax in thewarm sunshine.

Several proudly fly the coveted Blue Flag, highlighting the cleanliness and clarity of the sea.The islandis surrounded by crystal clear waters giving excellent underwater visibility.

This unspoilt white-sanded paradise, with pastoral landscapes where wild flowers and rosemary bloomin abundance, is a haven for those who enjoy a tranquil atmosphere where time is of no consequenceand the need for peace is paramount.

Playa Illetes is a long sweep of sand where the lapping of thesea deposits a pink coral coating and the waters offer an endlessrange of blues and greens as they flow to meet the horizon.

➛Playa Tramuntana is at thefoot of the steep, rocky cliffsnear Es Calo. These quietsandy coves are ideal forsnorkelling, scuba diving andswimming.

Playa d`es Pujols is asheltered bay, popular withfamilies. A beautiful expanseof soft white sand andtranslucent, turquoise wateroffers the opportunity topractise several water sports,should you feel energetic.The excellent water-sportsschool of WET 4 FUN is tobe found here.

Playa Llevant reaches fromEspalmador to Es Pujols. It isa very quiet beach, ideal fornaturists and those who liketo have a secluded beach tothemselves.

Es Calo has a beautiful sandy beach to be foundbeyond a harbour which was once used by theancient Romans. Here, Miguel and Maria have theirwelcoming beach bar for cool refreshments.

Cala Saona is a sandy bay framed by tall rocks. Should youdecide to spend your sunshine hours here, there are severalgood restaurants to tempt you with their local fresh seafoodrecipes. To the north of Cala Saona the coast is rocky butprovides excellent sunbathing platforms and easy access to thesea for the superb fishing, snorkelling and diving conditionswhich prevail in the absence of a sandy shore.

Playa Migjorn extends for 5 km along the south of the islandand is perfect for those wanting to soak up the sun in private.This beautiful coast is characterised by long stretches of softwhite sand alternating with smaller more secluded bays. Hereyou will find beach bars and restaurants where you can relaxduring the day and dine watching beautiful sunsets.
