Backyard Homesteading week 2: Base Mapping for
L’Étoile Homestead
The Process: Taking measurements I was eager to go field learning:
I choose measuring the long way… And it did take long!
Walking on the land enabled me to really get
a better feeling of the place, and to “discover” where some important features were located
Discoveries:Walking on the land with an eye of person
doing mapping, I saw some aspects and strengths that I will want to make use of them later on this course:
Different habitats: where the most humid place is located, the most dense part of the forest, the warmest spot…
Already present species: wild apples, high bush cranberries, currents… all hiding in the forest
And way too much grass lawn not serving anymore!
The Process: Putting it in paperThe biggest challenge!
With the large amounts of measurements taken, I was persuaded I was ready to start mapping…
Not so! It looked like some measures were contradicting each others: so I went check up the real measures a few
times on-site.
The Process: DrawingThis part made me see the large overview of
the land I am going to design: It is like rediscovering the land with new eyes, on a property that I thought I knew like the back
of my hand! This makes me eager to learn more and to be able to really get into designing
The Final Result: I am proud of it!
