We value public education and we are a diverse and inclusive school, we acknowledge our differences and we celebrate them too – our inclusivity was celebrated during Harmony Day and is practiced every day in our classrooms, the playground and in the community. I have learnt that you, our parents, carers and community play an important role in the successes of our school and community – seeing so many of you participate in 3 way interviews with your child/ren and their teacher over the last two weeks is another reason to celebrate our achievements at Summer Hill Public School. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

As we come to the end of Term 1 2019 I’d like to say thank you to the students, staff, parents, caregivers and friends of Summer Hill Public School who have welcomed having a new principal leading and managing the school – me! The relationships, respectful partnerships, collaboration and sharing have provided me with many opportunities to learn about our community in order to lead ongoing school improvement.

Students are our core business at Summer Hill Public School and their experiences and growth is what matters. They benefit from the many opportunities they are provided at Summer Hill Public School. I have seen students achieve in sports, academics, the arts and in their personal goals (already, in just one term). Just recently, Naomi in Year 4 featured in the Sydney Morning Herald due to being announced as the joint winner of the International Jazz Day composition event.

Hi Everyone,

Telstra Kids Grant – Woo Hoo!

Great news! We are delighted to announce our success in applying for a $1200 grant from Telstra. Telstra Kids helps kids thrive in their connected world. The funds will be used to purchase technology that will be used in classrooms to enable kids to learn how to use digital resources in a creative way. Huge thanks to Anna Burnham from Telstra, who is the referrer. This grant requires an employee from Telstra to apply on our behalf – thanks Anna for being that person!

A bunch of thanks for the Disco Thank you so much to everyone who helped with the Earth Hour Disco last Friday night. It was a really successful event with what felt like a million happy, glow-in-the-dark kids. Over 80 awesome volunteers rolled up on the night to sell tickets, spruik the raffle, supervise the hall and decorate children with neon face paint. We sold over 500 halal sausages, 100 portions of delicious Dal and Rice, Chai, 1680 waste-free, sugar-laden rainforest critters and over 350 serves of gelato.

Thanks to the Ministers who turned up to the school gates early on Friday morning, wearing glamour outfits and disco wigs, to sell raffle tickets. And thank you to the students who worked on the artwork at the Disco: Jio, Sigrid, Aaliyah, Suzie and Olivia Z. Thank you to Chloe for the lovely Disco poster.

Thank you to the great people and businesses who donated prizes: Lisa Nikki - weekend away at 'Dogwood' Southern Highlands Holiday Home Glow Worm Bicycles - donated $150 voucher & 2 week electric bike hire Summer Hill Gym - One Month's platinum membership Taronga Zoo - family day passes x 2 Pure Gelato - series of 1 litre vouchers

All prizes were drawn and awarded as the assemblies last Thursday. K-2: Amogh KCC, Henry 1AP, Maya KDT, Flora 1KB 3-6: Katie & Mickey Yr 3 & Oliver & Abbey Yr 6.

Enjoy the holidays everyone. See you in Term 2! Cheers,

Danielle Elliott

Congratulations to Chloe and Rebecca from Year 6 who have gained selection in the Sydney East Regional girls basketball team and will compete at the NSW PSSA championships in Albury later this year. Congratulations also to Claudia, Julia, Zahra and Ryan who will all compete at the Sydney East Regional touch football championships as members of the Western Suburbs teams. We also congratulate Hugo M who will be competing at the Regional Hockey Championships

Tim Kay

We started the day by waking up really early and meeting Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Kapoor at the Auburn Aquatic Centre, for the start of a big day at the WSPSSA Zone Swimming Carnival. Everybody was so excited and encouraging towards one another. The first race was the open 100m Freestyle. All of Summer Hill’s participants did so well, and everyone had a great start to the day. Next was the 50m Freestyle, which was then followed by the 50m Breaststroke, Butterfly and Backstroke. After this was the lunch break, where people had the opportunity to go to the canteen. Then came the 200m medley. It was tiring just watching all the swimmers race in such a competitive event! Then came the most exciting part of the day… THE RELAY!!! Summer Hill’s teams did so well, and then sadly it was the end of the day. Even though everybody was tired, we all had so much fun! Also, a big congratulations to Jacob and Laura who placed in their races and made it through to the regional carnival. WELL DONE SUMMER HILL!!!

MUSIC CALENDAR TERM 1 AND TERM 2

Thank you everyone for a great first term. We are off to a terrific start to the year! Next term is set to be full of great performances and opportunities so make sure you recharge your batteries over the holidays and also take note of the dates for next term. We would like lots of solo or small group items for our Evening Concert Series next term, so make sure you practice your pieces so we are ready. Also don’t forget to set aside the dates for the Weekend Workshops - these are always really beneficial and students improve so much but more importantly, the whole group sounds better after a few days of rehearsal together. As always, we welcome our all important parent volunteers to help make this all work so please let us know if you can help with any part of the weekend (no musical expertise required). Our Band and Orchestra Breakfast was well attended and well catered—thank you everyone who contributed and supported us. I hope we demystified the rehearsal process for you and made you all feel very welcomed to the Summer Hill Music Program. An especially big thank you to the Music Support Committee members, particularly Sally Hughes, for all your efforts this year. Enjoy the break and see you all back first week next term!

Regards The Music support Group, Cathy Chan

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM FROM LITTLETHINGS BIG THINGS GROW

Congratulations to Naomi 4SG, for being the joint winner of the International Jazz Day Com-position Competition. To quote from the Sydney Morning Herald;

“Naomi Nogawa-Lewy, a year four student at Summer Hill Public School, was equally chuffed. The judge, renowned American jazz musician Herbie Hancock, was so taken by her entry he declared her a joint winner of the competition open to kindergarten to year 12 students nationwide.”

Naomi composed and performed her melody on a descant recorder not a violin as pictured, for the recording of her entry. Flynn and Naomi's melodies have been arranged into a piece that will be premiered by the NSW Public Schools Jazz Orchestra at the International Jazz Day opening ceremony in Melbourne on April 30.

Naomi and her parents are being flown courtesy of International Jazz Day IJD and the Arts Unit to Melbourne to see her work performed at the opening ceremony and will get to meet Herbie Hancock, jazz legend and patron of IJD.

I would also like to commend Sanjeev Gopal for entering a very worthy composition into the competition. We can’t always be winners but we can always step up and have a go. Well done Sanjeev and Naomi !!

Senior Choir Advanced Recorder and Advanced Ukulele… Advanced Recorder and Advanced Ukulele rehearsals will recommence in Week 2 Term 2 along with the Senior Choir. I have created Skoolbag groups for the Senior Choir, Advanced Recorder and Advanced Ukulele for improved communication between school and home. I apologise to anyone who didn’t get the Skoolbag message regarding cancelled Advanced Ukulele class last week. You can subscribe to groups yourself through the app. We do not plan to be sick and we do our best to avoid any inconvenience to you or your children .

Have a safe and happy holiday. Regards Donna Ross Music Teacher
