Students made remembrance poppies to wear to the service. The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate the war dead. Our athletics carnival was a huge success thanks to our carnival organisers and our P&C volunteers. It was wonderful to see so many students participate in age races and novelty events. Congratulations to those students who will go on to represent our school at the zone athletics and cross country carnivals. You may have noticed works being done across the school over the holidays and into Term 2…contractors have been working hard to replace the roof on B Block, and various other guttering and down pipes across the school; however even better, Mr Heads and the P&C completed the second phase of our Intuitive Play Space. The space is fabulous! Thank you to the P&C and our community for funding this initiative for our kids. So what’s to come? Year 6 will be enjoying their Canberra excursion from Wednesday to Friday this week (well maybe not the 6.30am start on Wednesday) and Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in online NAPLAN across Weeks 3 and 4 this term (that’s next week and the week after). I’m sure all of our students will do their very best. Finally, our newsletter will now be published three times per term in Week 2, Week 6 and Week 10. Thank you for taking the time to read about what’s happening at Summer Hill Public School, we are very excited to report what our students have been doing. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Students have participated in and celebrated a number of events since our previous newsletter. It was fun for all at our Easter Hat Parade, where students paraded their home made hats, many made of recycled material, to students, staff and families. Once again the children from Summer Hill Children’s Centre joined us for the event…and weren’t they cute!

More recently, 3TK and 6VK hosted our ANZAC commemorations which gave students the opportunity to pay tribute to and remember those who have served. It was a solemn service where everyone was able to show their respect. On this day students also participated in activities about how we explore and understand the past. Our athletics carnival was a huge success thanks to our carnival organisers and our P&C volunteers. It was wonderful to see so many students participate in age races and novelty events. Congratulations to those students who will go on to represent our school at the zone athletics and cross country carnivals.

Hi Everyone, May is a busy time for the P&C in 2019!

Mother’s Day Breakfast! THIS FRIDAY! Come along to celebrate your mum, grandmum, carer or any special person in your life. We’ll have the BBQs on, cooking up some delicious food to share. 7:30 – 9:00 am at school. See you there! You can still volunteer for one of our last slots. Sign up here: http://signup.com/go/AmAtndo

Entertainment Book The oldest child in your family would have come home with the Entertainment book on Friday. This is one of the fundraisers for the school year - for every sale of a book, $14 goes straight to the school. Plus you will enjoy many benefits till next June! Some of our favourites are:

Mantra holiday deals

5 - 10% discount off many gift cards including Woolies, Country Road and Rebel

25% off at New Shangai, Zeus Street Greek and Japanese Dining Bar Shinsen Ashfield

You have the following options:

**Highly recommended

Election Day BBQ On 18 May 2019 the P&C will be wheeling out the barbecues and cake stands again to feed the masses queuing up to vote in the 2019 Federal Election. Yes, it feels like Groundhog Day for me too. To pull off this increasingly regular extravaganza, we need your help, however long you can help for. There is a job for everyone, including the kids (>8 yo). So, if you can help out, please go to Signup.com using this link https://signup.com/go/VTCHFwN. If you can only stay for part of a shift, that’s OK too, but please still put your name down. Any and all assistance much appreciated. Please contact Lisa Mitchell at [email protected] or on 0419 528 069 with any queries.

Expenses and Electronic funds A reminder that we have new Electronic Funds Request forms and a new Expenses Process. You can find these on the P&C page of the school website. These forms are part of our process to reimburse expenses electronically. We’ll do this every first and third weekend of the month, so if you’ve paid for something for an event and require reimbursement, get your receipts and forms in as soon as you can.

P&C Meeting – Tues 21 May in the school hall 7:00pm This month’s meeting will start a little earlier – 7:00pm. Everyone is welcome. Come along to listen, to be a part of the conversation, or if you have an agenda item, please email it to [email protected] by Thursday 16 May. Cyber Awareness Forum Are you interested in cyber safety or would like to talk about children's use of technology? Come along to the P&C's new Cyber Awareness Forum: - Wednesday 22 May 11am-12pm (School Hall) - Saturday 15 June 2.30pm-3.30pm (venue tbc) If you'd like to know more, or have particular items you'd like to discuss then please contact us at: [email protected] See you there!

Playground upgrade Stage 2 of the playground upgrade has now been completed. Stage 2 was made possible from P&C Fundraising in 2017/2018, so a huge thank you to our amazing school community that comes together to support our school in so many different ways with fabulous outcomes such as this. Also a huge thank you to Richard Heads for helping to great such a beautiful play space for our kids.

Thank you to all our volunteers, and those who come along to events and the P&C meetings. We can’t do it without you! See you at the Mother’s Day breakfast, the Election BBQ or at the P&C meeting! Danielle Elliott
