Climate Change Group is one of the 12 research groups at JSM. This group, headed by PM Dr. Fadhilah Yusof, is one of the research groups affiliated to UTM Water Research Alliance. At Water RA, our research mainly revolves around integrated water resources management (IWRM) involving climate studies and various strands of water research studies such as river discharge monitoring. Similar to other RAs, Water RA also has a network of collaborators both local and foreign. One of its foreign collaborators is the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) or Gakushin for short, is a non-profit organisation whose operations are funded largely by subsidies from the Japanese government. One of its operations includes promoting international scientific cooperation.

In 2011, the Japanese and the Malaysian government, started a collabora-tion called Asian Core Program (Integrated water management) funded by JSPS. The objectives of this JSPS-ACP program are to create world-class research hubs in selected fields within the Asian region, to foster the next generation of leading researchers and to conduct exchanges based on a principle of equal partnership. These exchanges take the form of joint research, seminars and other specific meetings and research exchanges. This 6-year planned program (2011-2016) is coordinated by Kyoto Uni-versity and University of Malaya, supported by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sara-wak .

The members for this program are a mixture of researchers consisting of Engineers, Environmentalists, Statisticians, Chemists, Biologists, Law-yers, Policy Makers, and even Linguists. There are four focus groups spe-cific for this program. Group 1- Hydrology (JSM Climate Change group members belong to this group); Group 2-Water Quality; Group 3: Risk Assessment; Group 4: Governance. The steering committee for each group consists of representatives from Japan and Malaysia. Each team works on similar aspects of research based on their focus group on their own coun-try’s respective watershed. Watershed can be defined as an area or ridge of land that separates water flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas. For the Malaysian team, three watersheds are investigated. They are Sungai Selan-gor (UM), Sg Langat (UKM) and Sg Johor (UTM). The Japanese water-shed area is mainly on Lake Biwa in Honshu.

Each year, a symposium is held to gather all members from the two coun-tries to present and share their findings. The venue for the symposium alternates between Japan and Malaysia. In October last year, several mem-bers from the climate change group, namely PM Dr. Fadhilah Yusof, Dr. Shariffah Suhaila, Dr. Zalina Daud (Razak School UTM) and I were in-vited to attend The 3rd Comprehensive Symposium of JSPS Asian Core Program "Research and Education Center for the Risk Based Asian Ori-ented Integrated Watershed Management" held at Uji Ohbaku Plaza, Kyoto University from 28-30th October 2013. The symposium was a two-day event and the last day was reserved for the Malaysian participants especially to plan their own activities. Excerpts for the following para-graphs were taken from the JSPS-ACP website.

The symposium drew 130 participants, a majority of them are Malaysian. Prior to the trip, the participants were asked to prepare a scientific poster . On the first day, the event started with a show of montage displaying the program memorabilia in photos of previous JSPS-ACP successful events. The welcoming note was made by Prof. Masao Kitano, Dean of the Gradu-ate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. This is followed by opening addresses by the coordinators of the program, Prof. Yoshihisa Shimizu from Kyoto University and Prof. Nik Meriam Nik Sulaiman from Univer-sity of .Malaya.

Dr. Yuichi Sato, researcher from Lake Biwa Environmental Research In-stitute (LBERI), delivered the invited lecture on "The History of Environ-ment in Lake Biwa and Recent Conservation Efforts - Focusing on Mother Lake 21 Plan and Modeling Approach". In the afternoon, poster sessions were held, only 74 participants presented their posters.

Afterwards, two keynote addresses were delivered. "Transboundary Water Assessment Program (TWAP) and Integrated Lake Basin Management

(ILBM): Global Challenge and Asian Prospect" delivered by Prof. Masa-hisa Nakamura, Shiga University, and "Observation and Prediction of Heavy Rainfall due to Severe Storms and Related Disaster Prediction in Urban Areas Using the Latest Weather Radars in Japan" delivered by Prof. Eiichi Nakakita, Kyoto University.

On the second day, four research workshops were held concurrently: Hy-drology, Water Quality, Environment Risk and Governance. Each group discussed research activities and delivered summaries.

The coordinators of the program emphasized the importance of fostering the next generation of leading researchers, while contributing to the better-ment of life for mankind through research activities. Thus, in accordance with the purpose of the symposium, a competition for posters presented by researchers below forty years old were judged. Dr. Sharifah Suhaila did an excellent job for her poster and received one of the awards for "Outstanding Poster Presentation" at the closing ceremony. The next day, we met Ariff Admon, one of our JSM staff who is studying for a PhD at Osaka University. We were honoured that he took the time to travel from Osaka to Kyoto to meet us. He came with a friend who was incidentally my ex-student from FKM aeons ago.

On a personal note, this Nihon trip has been different from my last trip in 1998. Then, I was travelling all alone, on a totally different platform (non-academic), to work on a pollutant source company (automotive), and 15 years later I came with great travelling companions, on an academic plat-form to work on improving the sustainability of the environment. A com-plete opposite. But I am definitely at a better place. Alhamdulillah. ◙
