A GOOD START…A LONG WAY TO GO
A total of approximately 140 parishioners attended the three weekend Masses on June 27-28 and everything went as smoothly as could be expected for a first time experience with endless pro-tocols in place. People seemed happy to be here, followed all the guidelines, and had no trouble maintaining social distancing while still enjoying this time together. So much of that was due to the presence of generous volunteers on the three commit-tees—set-up, greeting/ushering and clean-up—who followed through, in a gracious and welcoming manner, with the myriad instructions the Archdiocese had provided and the team cap-tains had shared with them. We should all be grateful to them. And if you’d like to join them, just e-mail me—not directly from this message if you receive it as an e-mail—but at [email protected] and I’ll pass your contact information on to the appropriate person.
Going forward, we’ll be keeping the same weekend schedule and observing the same safety protocols for as long as those are required by the Archdiocese. Even though we were able to wel-come a few walk-ins because we had not reached our maximum capacity, it is still important to sign up for whatever Mass you wish to attend—Saturday at 5:15 or Sunday at 8:00 or 10:30. In addition to online sign-up, now that we’ve resumed regular of-fice hours, you can call the rectory, M-W-F from 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m., T-Th. until 7:30p.m., Sat. 9:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. and Sun. from 9:00 to 10:30 to sign up for a mass. Please try to do that by 3:00p.m. on Saturday, and remember that you should list all the names of those in your household or the names of neighbors or friends for whom you’re signing up. And if, at the last minute you’re not able to come or you need to switch to a different Mass, don’t worry, it will be just fine.
Beginning Tuesday, July 7, morning Mass will resume at 8:30a.m., Tuesday thru Friday only for now, and you also need to sign up for those Masses, ideally by 4:00p.m. the previous day, or you can sign up once for more than one day if you wish. Remember that the sign-up requirement is for purposes of con-tact tracing so that, if you become ill, you can let us know and we can then contact all those who were at a particular Mass with you so that they can be tested. By now, everyone should know the symptoms to look for, and you’re asked to stay home in the first place if you’re experiencing any of those symptoms. I have no doubt that everyone is being very conscientious and consid-erate in that department.

As we move forward through July, we’ll re-evaluate the Mass schedule and consider the possibility of adding a third Sunday Mass; but it’s unlikely, due to sanitizing requirements, that we’ll return to four Sunday Masses anytime soon, if ever. We just have to wait and see. Remember, too, that the dispensation from attending Sunday Mass continues until September, especially for those with underlying health conditions or those of a certain age! Bottom line: be patient & use common sense!
Finally, beginning July 6th, we’re also ready to resume funerals or schedule Memorial Masses for those who passed away during the past months when funerals with more than 10 participants were not permitted. Using the guideline of 15% of church capacity, that means that we can accommodate, with social distancing, up to 135 people, certainly more that usually attend a funeral. Just call the rectory to arrange a Memorial Mass or ask your family funeral di-rector to arrange it for you.
Once again, thanks to all the reopening volunteers, all our liturgical ministers, all those who attended last weekend, and all of you who are still being cautious and patient as we move forward. Hopefully, eventually, we’ll be back to something resembling normal—whatever that may be.

14H SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
We are all familiar with the refrain,
―You have put on Christ. In him you
have been baptized. Alleluia, alle-
luia!‖ In Baptism, we ―put on‖
Christ. In putting on Christ, we put
on all that Christ is and represents:
hope, faith, and love. We are no longer bound to the sins and failures of
the flesh, that part of us that resists God and relies exclusively on hu-
man means. It also means that we are not in debt to our past, complete
with its sins, failures, regrets, fears, and unfulfilled dreams. There is al-
ways hope. In putting on Christ, we put on God’s vision for the world, for
all of His children and for us. We have been given a road map to guide
our paths and a blueprint to follow for our life’s journey.
There is no need for regret, and we are not tethered to our past. Is there
anything in your past that you regret? Any decision or memory that con-
tinues to haunt you? We have all made mistakes, and we have this un-
canny ability to continue beating ourselves up over things we can no
longer do anything about, except learn from them. To put on Christ
means that I can now bring God’s unconditional love to my hurtful
memories and sinful choices. With each new moment and every new
choice, I can start clean and live in freedom.
Imagine adults when the disciples were preaching and baptizing. They
came to baptism not really knowing who they were, with pasts that were
broken, seeking to live the joy of the Gospel they heard spoken to them
and wanting the love they saw witnessed in the lives of those who be-
lieved. What tremendous celebrations their baptisms must have been!
They could now have the support of a community, full participation in
the sacraments of the church, focus for their disordered lives, consola-
tion, healing, and an understanding of what life is really all about.
Our lives are meant to be celebrations of the Spirit we have received in
Baptism. How does that joy get expressed in and through you? When we
truly understand that we have put on Christ, our burdens can become
much lighter. It is odd that so many Christians look like they are carrying
the weight of the world on their shoulders. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if
those weights could be lifted and joy experienced! ©LPi

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
FAITH LIKE A CHILD
If you Google Search recommenda-
tions on how to raise generous chil-
dren, almost every list of ideas be-
gins with — or at least contains —
the directive for adults to be good
models of generosity themselves.
Our children learn from our actions
much more than from our words. Of
course, when I think back over the
years while my children were grow-
ing up, I think I may have learned
as much from them as they learned
from me. There is a time between
early childhood and middle school
where a child seems to be freer to
give and share than at any other
time in life. It is around the age of
First Communion when the cries of
―mine‖ turn to laughter and smiles,
and the urge to be a part of some-
thing bigger than oneself leads to
sharing. Before you know it, the
child hits the pre-teen years, and
once again, he or she becomes the
center of the universe.
I believe that the previous para-
graph is all true, however, the
stages described seem to repeat
themselves throughout adulthood.
Don’t you agree? Sometimes we
fall into seeing ourselves as the
center of the universe, or we be-
come consumed by our state in life
or with what we have acquired.
Also, we at times are generous and
loving people. It is sin that draws us
back into ourselves and away from
any meaningful life of stewardship
and generosity. In order to be freed
for love, we need role models to
help us see what really matters. We
need to reflect on the example of
many of our brothers and sisters in
Christ. And, yes, we need to look to
children who may be at the point in
their lives where sharing is fun, and
love is something in abundance.

The archdiocese has advised
religious education programs to
develop the capacity to offer
classes in both virtual and in-

need catechists who can teach
both virtual classes or 'at-home

to be executed safely we need a
new cadre of volunteers to
monitor safety measures such
as social distancing upon entry/

WHY DO PRIESTS KISS THE ALTAR
AT THE START OF MASS?
Our churches and chapels are
filled with symbols. We might
think of the more common sym-
bols (like the crucifix, statues,
stained-glass windows, vestment
color and altar cloths) as well as
major symbols (such as the pas-
chal candle and the baptismal font). But there are some things that we
can take for granted in our sacred spaces, because unfortunately, they
seem to just be part of the building, including three of the main sym-
bols of our liturgy: the ambo (lectern), the chair for the priest celebrant,
and the altar.
These three objects are placed in a specially designated area called
the sanctuary. They are the places where the Word of God is pro-
claimed, where the priest prays and presides at the celebration, and
where the bread and wine are offered by the priest during the Eucharis-
tic Prayer. Although each of these objects is sacred because of the role
they play in our worship, the altar holds a special place. In a document
containing the rules and instructions for the Mass — the ―General In-
struction of the Roman Missal‖ — we read: ―The altar on which the Sac-
rifice of the Cross is made present under sacramental signs is also the
table of the Lord to which the People of God is called together to par-
ticipate in the Mass, as well as the center of the thanksgiving that is
accomplished throughout the Eucharist‖ (no. 296).
One of the ways that we recognize the importance of the altar is when
the priest and deacon kiss the altar at the beginning of Mass. Kissing
is an ancient act of devotion. Remember, we also kiss the cross on
Good Friday, and the deacon or priest kisses the ―Book of the Gospels‖
after the Gospel is proclaimed. This act of devotion reminds us that the
altar is a symbol of Jesus, the ―living stone‖ (see 1 Peter 2:4), the foun-
dation stone of our faith. It is a symbol gesture, but it is a powerful re-
minder of the One on whom our faith is built and in whose name we
gather as the ―household of faith‖ (see Galatians 6:10).
To learn more, see the ―Catechism of the Catholic Church‖ (no. 1382-
1383). ©LPi

Gospel Reading
Matthew 11:25-30

BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL READING
Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel comes after a discourse in which Jesus reproaches people who
have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. In this context, today’s Gospel explains the reason for
this unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith. Today’s Gospel also continues to enhance our under-
standing of discipleship as last week’s Gospel did.
Jesus first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God
who has made himself known to the ―little ones‖ and not to the wise and learned. As in other recent read-
ings from Matthew’s Gospel, a contrast is made here between the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and
learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company.
The second part of this reading calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has
made himself known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and
in his person, God reveals himself to us.
In the concluding sentences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again contrasted to the teaching of the
Pharisees. This common theme of Matthew’s Gospel probably reflects tension that existed between Jesus
and the Pharisees and between the Pharisees and the community of Christians for whom Matthew wrote.
Pharisaic Judaism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusa-
lem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance
of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be experienced by some as difficult and burdensome. In
contrast, Jesus’ way of holiness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful.

At that time Jesus exclaimed: ―I give praise to you, Father, Lord of
