A lot of work goes into mounting a theatre production. The actors

must learn their lines and rehearse their movements. The costumes

must be sewn, the lights hung. And of course, the stage must be

set, with the right props and backdrops to support the action and

bring the play to life.

During the past year, Fanshawe College began preparing for

an exciting initiative, and the Foundation committed itself to

a major capital campaign that will set the stage. At the heart

of this campaign is the new Fanshawe School of Applied and

Performance Arts in downtown London. It is a big project, but one that we believe is possible based

on the existing strengths of the Foundation. In the past year we

have seen continued growth in giving to the College, both in cash

and in-kind gifts. The response of local businesses, in particular,

has been outstanding. On behalf of the Board, I thank all those

who have supported student learning at Fanshawe through their

charitable contributions.

The past year saw the Foundation gather strength, with an

expanded staff and an effective operational structure under our

outstanding Executive Director, Catherine Finlayson. Our Board,

which represents the many communities served by Fanshawe,

also grew in size and commitment. The Foundation has a close

and supportive relationship with the senior leadership of the

College. There is a wonderful sense of teamwork – a feeling that

we are all moving together toward a shared goal of excellence.

As we move ahead, we will continue to build our relationships

with all stakeholders – our alumni, leadership, faculty, staff, students

and volunteers, and our communities. It is with and through these

partners that we are setting the stage for a bright future.

At the end of a wonderful theatrical performance, the applause

begins. Often audiences are moved to stand up as they clap,

paying the performers the ultimate compliment.

With that theatrical metaphor in mind, I am on my feet to

the women and men who have supported Fanshawe College so

generously during the past year. Thanks to your gifts, we have

been able to offer exceptional learning experiences to thousands

of students, helping them realize their full potential.

Fanshawe is what it is today because of your support. Your

gifts help us to reward excellence and provide support for studentswho face financial and other barriers to learning. They enable us

to improve existing programs and technologies, and introduce new

curriculum to keep pace with the changing world around us.

As we prepare to launch a major capital campaign, contributions

to the College will build exciting new facilities, which in turn will

enable new learning experiences.

You have the satisfaction of knowing that your gifts are touching

the lives of women and men who are reaching for their dreams.

And your gifts come back to you in the form of exceptional

Fanshawe graduates, who enrich our communities with their

energy and creativity.

I also applaud the Fanshawe College Foundation and its

Board and staff, for being the link between Fanshawe and its

supporters. Together with our donors, we are setting the stage

for a world-class performance.

There is no question that 2010 will be remembered for the

momentous decision to launch a major capital campaign for

Fanshawe. That’s why we chose “Setting the Stage” as the theme

for this report to the community – because we are about to launch

our most ambitious philanthropic endeavour yet.

The Campaign will support the College’s growth for many

years to come, and in particular will fuel innovative development

in downtown London. The Fanshawe School of Applied and

Performance Arts will foster creativity and excellence in our

communities, preparing students for careers in the arts, design, theatre, digital media, and culinary and hospitality industries.

It will bring together new and existing programs in London’s historic

downtown, playing a key role in its revitalization.

For the Fanshawe College Foundation, the Campaign will be

our opportunity to step into the spotlight and share our passion for

the College with a broader audience.

Among other highlights of 2010:

  • The Foundation hosted seven major student award ceremonies

and two bursary ceremonies, and a record number of awards,

scholarships and bursaries were presented.

  • There were significant increases in the number of donor- funded bursaries and academic awards.

  • The Foundation hosted a total of 26 events throughout the

year, building engagement and support for the College.

  • The Foundation’s two signature fundraisers, the Fanshawe

College Gala and Fanshawe College Golf Classic, again

exceeded the previous year’s revenues.

  • The campaign on behalf of the James N. Allan Campus in

Simcoe, Ontario attracted new gifts from organizations such

as TD Canada Trust, the Rotary Club of Norfolk County, the

Norfolk Community Foundation, Ontario Power Generation

and others. The campaign is now more than half way to the

goal of $1 million.

  • Through the Foundation, the College received a wide range of

in-kind gifts, including those from new donors such as Stanley

Black & Decker, Black Knight Canada, Norcard and Londonartist Patrick Thibert.

  • A number of staff and staff groups chose to establish new

planned gifts, awards and scholarships, reflecting their strong

belief in the mission of the College

My thanks to my wonderful staff team, and to the visionary

donors, supporters, volunteers who made all this possible. The

lights are dimming and the curtain is about to rise on the next act.

We can’t wait to see what happens next!

“Roger was a likeable, gentle soul, a bit of a loner, yet with a

positive outlook on life. He was a bit different in his mannerisms,

as bachelors tend to be, yet he would give you anything you asked

for. He was a great brother and a nice person who lived a good life.”

That’s entrepreneur and philanthropist Andy Spriet, paying tribute

to his brother, in whose name he contributed $100,000 to the

Simcoe campus of Fanshawe College. The 40-year-old campusis in urgent need of renewal, upgrading and expansion. Fanshawe

College Foundation is raising $1 million to support the project.

Roger, Andy and their six siblings grew up on a tobacco farm not

far from Simcoe. Roger lived and worked on his parents’ farm, and

later for his sister Simonne and her husband Richard Van DeWiele.

Despite having relatively little formal education, he had a keen

and curious mind, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of cars. He

was also an avid fan of local sports teams, and especially the girls’

soccer team at Simcoe Catholic High School. He was a regular at al

their games and was honoured by the team for his unfailing support

Roger lived frugally and when he died, left his estate of $1 million

to his seven siblings. Andy, in turn, contributed his share to the

Simcoe project, earmarking it for the student centre. “I chose thestudent space because that’s an area where his interest would lie,”

says Andy. “Future students will benefit from the facility being built

with his hard-earned money. And perhaps some of them may ask,

“Who is this Roger Andrew Spriet whose name is on the plaque”?

THIRD ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | 201

When Andy Crosbie and Angus MacKay were attending

Fanshawe’s renowned Music Industry Arts program, you couldn’t

download music from the Internet to your iPod. In fact, there

was no Internet. The radio stations controlled what was heard –

usually fairly conventional pop music.

Angus had what Andy calls a “very open artistic mind.”

Before he attended Fanshawe, he was a musician who played

with an R&B band that toured Canada. After Fanshawe, he

embraced the emerging new wave and indie rock music scene.

He and Andy founded Ready Records, a small but influential

label that signed a number of new bands in the early to mid-

80s, including the Spoons, Blue Peter, The Demics, Colin Linden

and Manteca. Ready was also briefly the home of TeenageHead, the Guess Who and the first all-Canadian cast recording

of Anne of Green Gables.

Andy says Angus was ahead of his time: “A lot of people in

the industry didn’t care about the new style of music,” he says.

“Angus was one of a few people promoting and producing these

bands, and eventually it spread. Now indie rock is the norm.”

He points proudly to the fact that Ready has two records in a

book listing Canada’s one hundred greatest singles.

Angus went on to form three other

record labels, including Kids Records, which

featured Canada’s top-selling author of all

time, Robert Munsch. When Angus died

in June 2010, his wife Laurie MacKay

and Andy Crosbie established the Angus

MacKay MIA Bursary to celebrate his many

contributions to the music industry. “Like

most of us, the success he had in his career

was directly attributable to the program

and the College,” says Andy. “Creating a

bursary for students in financial need is very

representative of what Angus stood for.”  To date, more than 48 donations have

been received, raising more than $33,750

for the bursary fund.

“Adversity, and there’s no shortage of it

in the music business, makes for the best

comedy,” says Andy. “Angus and I had a

wonderful time together. We worked so

hard, there were times we saw more of

each other than anyone else. We never

regretted a moment of it.”

Fanshawe College Foundation | fanshawec.ca/foundation

In the late ‘60s, London, Ontario had a vibrant arts scene. Oneyoung man, passionate about both movies and live plays, was lucky

enough to have his own theatre in which to explore his creativity.

He tapped another young man, already a recognized film

aficionado, to program films for the theatre.

More than 40 years later, the first young man is Oscar-winning

screen writer and director Paul Haggis. The other is recently retired

Fanshawe professor Joseph Dunlop-Addley. Dunlop-Addley has

established a student award and made a gift through his will to

the College.

Paul and Joseph were confreres in the first years of film studies

at Fanshawe. Joseph dreamed of becoming a film critic, but tried

teaching and became hooked. “The most important thing as a

teacher is to set the bar high and then challenge and encouragestudents to achieve their very best,” he says. “Then it’s really

important to celebrate their accomplishments when they do.” A

good teacher, he says, is sensitive to students who are experiencing

stress and always ready to listen and provide guidance.

Joseph says his proudest achievements at Fanshawe are

establishing a film studies major in language and liberal studies,

and launching the advanced filmmaking program.

Joseph received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001,

and was the College’s nominee for the Premier’s Award that year.

Being named Fanshawe’s first ever Professor Emeritus, an honorary

title that recognizes decades of service, was what he calls “the icing

on the cake.”

Over the years, Joseph has attended and been moved by manystudent awards ceremonies. Now his connection to the ceremonies

will be even stronger. “I will be able to continue to attend, not just as

an observer but as a donor and participant!” His planned gift reflects

gratitude for a long and rewarding career.

After many years of volunteering with other community

organizations, he has also joined the College’s Alumni Board

of Directors. “I hope I can help to bring more and more alumni

back into the fold of the Fanshawe community. We’re still in

the learning curve as an alumni organization, so it’s a wonderful

opportunity for leadership.”
