Since the last newsletter our members have been involved in four different activities: Heritage Day, Charters Towers Swap Meet, All British Day and the President’s Run. Unfortunately the weekend in Ingham, planned for the 5th & 6th July clashed with school holidays and the Townsville 500 and had to be cancelledduetolackofsufficientnumbers.Reportsonall these activities are included in this newsletter. There have been some changes to the Club Calendar on the back page, so please check it out. Before the next newsletter there are six activities to enjoy - check the Club Calendar for more details:1. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea at Kevin and

Robyn Warren’s house, following on the tradition set by Alan and Celia Nott. Cars will leave Anderson Park at 1.45pm with the Veteran and Vintage cars taking the shortest route and the ‘Historics’ and ‘moderns’ taking a faster, but longer route to 5 Foot Court Rangewood.

2. The Qld. Heritage Rally (Friday25th to Sunday 27th July) has invited the TVVHMC to display our cars on the Saturday (26th). This is a great opportunity to assist our Burdekin members on the QHR Committee, which has worked extremely hard to bring together an impressive display of machinery. However, I must have names, car registrations and entry fees before Tuesday 22 July.

3. The Northern Beaches Festival is at Bluewater this year on the 10th August. Admission is $2 per car, plus $20 if you want your car to be judged in one of several categories. Meet at the Bohle Hotel at 7.45am for an 8.00am departure

4. The Jaguar Club has invited the TVVHMC to join it for lunch at Alva Beach, Ayr on the 24th August. It’s ‘BYO everything’ but there will be a BBQ available to have a cook-up. And we can travel as a group, departing Oonoonba Shopping centre at 9.30am

5. The ladies are getting together with their brollies for morning tea on the 27th August - Kristine has the details.

6. On the 7th September the Club’s BBQ trailer will be fireduponthepropertyof‘Wyola’outatWoodstock.Smokos and a BBQ lunch will be provided at a cost of $5 per person.

Hope to see you out and enjoying your cars at these events.Mal Lorimer Club Captain

Members

As we enjoy winter in the North, it is our rallying time. This edition of the Running Board is packed with rally reports from our activities for the last eight weeks. This is the time of year we can really enjoy our hobby. I would like to encourage each member to make an effort to get your vehicle out and participate in the rallies on offer in the program.

Having said that, not everyone is available for every run and likewise, not every run may be suitable for your car. In our own situation, by way of example, a run to Alva Beach for lunch hosted by the Jaguar Club is totally unsuitable for any of our cars, the newest of which was made in 1929. However our Club currently caters for cars made up until 1984 and many of our members own

suitable cars and should enjoy the day covering 200km at 100km per hour. Similarly, when the Veteran Car Club of Australia (Queensland) host a veteran (pre- January 1919) rally in the Burdekin District in August only suitable cars can participate.

But, the difference between the two events is choice. When our club nominates a run which effectively excludes members’ cars due to performance, those members should not be disadvantaged. All members can take advantage of concessional registration to enjoy the hobby. If the club run cannot be enjoyed in your concessionally registered car, an alternative must be offered.Frank CeruttiPresident.

Club Captain's Report

Weekend in Ingham 5-6th July 2014Unfortunately, this weekend at Ingham clashed with school holidays and the Townsville 500. Very few members from Ingham and Townsville responded to the RSVP and the accommodation at Forrest Beach being held for us had to be cancelled - maybe next year!

It was only a fortnight since Easter and the very busy Hub Rally, so I wasn’t expecting many members to turn up, but no, the regular attendees plus several visitors arrived ready to enjoy the day. Eleven cars, 19 club members and four visitors took part.

A game of poker added a bit of interest to a leisurely drive through Gulliver, Vincent, Heatley, Aitkenvale, Thuringowa, Condon and Rasmussen, with every car receiving one card before leaving Anderson Park and another at each of three stops along the way. ThefifthcardwasgivenonarrivalatLoamIsland, where players could replace one or two cards if they wished. Derek Walker won the game with the only decent hand: a pair of Queens!

The BBQ trailer hadn’t been used for at least four years, so this was a test run to see how long it took to set up and pack up, and if all the equipment per-formedefficiently.AspecialthankyoutoKenMcWhaand Bill Honniball for getting the lights working and making the trailer roadworthy, and to Chris and Bron-wyn Smalley for helping to set up the BBQ as well as minding the site while the poker run was in progress.

For $5 per head, a late ‘smoko’ with soft drink, tea, coffee and cake was available while the meat was cooking.Butteredbreadrollswaitedtobefilledwithhamburger and/or sausage plus coleslaw, to be followed by tea or coffee, chocolate caramels and grapes. There were ‘seconds’ for those who still felt ‘peckish’. Three late apologies were counterbalanced byfiveunexpectedextras-noproblem,allwereadequately fed, thanks to a 20% margin added for catering supplies. Everyone pitched in to help with the washing up and repacking the trailer, which Ken towed back to Bill’s place.

At the Club meeting in May there was general agree-ment that the trailer should be used more often (two more BBQs are planned for 2014) but some upgrades are necessary using the time and skills volunteered by some members: renovate gas burn-ers (Ron), exchange gas bottle (Derek W.), new trailer tyres (Bill H), replace spare tyre (Ken) new air-tight containers, seal boxes and purchase extra small items (Jean & Mal). At the meeting a motion was passed to make available up to $250 to cover the cost of this upgrade.

Heritage Day West End - 18 May 2014

Waking up to the sound of rain on the roof didn’t seem like a good start for Heritage Day. However the rain stopped after a short while even though the sky still looked threatening. Arriving early at West End Park stalls and exhibits were being set up with optimism, so the TVVHMC sun (?) shelter and banner were erected in between light showers. The Ford contingent arrived in procession along Ingham Road and took up their allotted site, and within minutes were all standing around in their prominent blue T-shirts, with coffee in hand, chatting. The MGs lined up along the pathway opposite our site - their numbers matched TVVHMC’s display but greatly benefitting fromYorkey’sfiveentrants.First toarrivefor our group was Bruce Watson, a visitor with an Austin A40 ute. Bruce asked if he could join us and was gladly welcomed. Next was Ken in the Peugeot and Warren in the Daimler. Serg arrive in real style, using a lot of grass area to position the ‘Rolls’ next to our HQ. George arrived in the Chrysler (Sandra drove the Jeep to the army site), then Derek H in the VW and Bill H in the Morris Z, followed closely by Ric and Helga in the Armstrong Siddeley. Last but not least was Frank in that saucy little Swift. Denis and Pam poppedinbriefly, havingjustreturnedfromatripdownsouth. All inall,TVVHMCpresentedafinecollectionofelevenoldcarsand19equallyfine(old?)membersand one visitor.

Time goes very quickly at the Heritage Day as there is a lot to do: talking to people that are admiring the cars, asking questions and listening to their stories; explaining why we can’t hire our cars out for weddings and school ‘formals’; taking photos; deciding what to indulge in for smoko and lunch; and viewing the many heritage displays. I love the way, at some arbitrary time, someone decides it might be time to ‘call it a day’ and there is a sudden burst of activity: chairs are stacked up and returned together with tables and poster boards to the TCC collection site and the sunshade is dismantled and packed away (only to be unfolded and draped over the furniture to dry out properly in my lounge room), all within 10 minutes - amazing!! Thank you everyone.Mal. Lorimer

Charters Towers Swap Meet • 8 June 2014The day got off to a damp start, with light rain falling as Derek (Mini), Warren and Miriam (Daimler) and Mal (Riley) set off from the Stuart Hotel at 7.30am.Just out of town I received a phone call, so pulled over and waved the others past, but starting off again ‘Missy’ began to run like a chaff-cutter. Pulled over again, liftedthebonnet(yes, stillraining)tofindpetrolsquirting out of the carby. Twenty minutes later with the needle valve re-positioned we were off again, only to be met by Derek, Warren and Miriam and the report of heavy rain at Calcium and getting worse further ahead. Their ‘executive decision’ was not to proceed, particularly as the Daimler’s windscreen wipers were not operational, and they drove off back to Townsville.I rang Frank, who was already at Charters Towers, to findoutthattheskywasindeedovercastbutnorain,so I continued on to meet up with those already there: Frank and Adrienne (Swift), Gary (Dodge), George (Jeep), Tom and Jan (T-Model Ford), Dave and Faye (Reo), Tiny and Yvonne (Austin 30), Norm and Jan (Modern) and Rod and Lorraine (Winnebago).

As cars arrived at the Showground they were directed into long lines across the oval, so, unlike previous years we were not able to have all our Club cars together on show and our banner prominently displayed. Although, as it turned out, with only seven Club cars, it would not have been a very good presentation. The rain held off long enough to have a good look at the impressive display of cars and wonder at the countless hours and dollars lavished on them, and to wander along the many stalls selling ‘bargains, too good to pass by’, as well as stalls with items that were very easily passed by!However, light rain began to fall about 1pm and set in for earnest by 3pm, signalling that it was time to pack up and head for home, leaving only the stalwarts to wait for the presentation ceremony, which was regularly announced as going to take place in “just a little while”. The high-light for the day was Adrienne’s Swift taking home the ‘Best Vintage, Historic, pre-1940 Car’ award Mal Lorimer

This annual event organised by the Jaguar Club never fails to attract an impressive display of ‘Pommie’ cars and motor bikes, and of course, a large turnout of Townsvillians to see, photograph and ask questions about the ‘pride and joys’.This year was no exception although wet weather threatened the event this time. Thankfully, although the sky was cloudy all day, the rain held off. With the TVVHMC marqueeandbanner inplaceearlyourdisplaywas thefirst tobeseenasotherentrants and visitors entered the main gate. We had three Morris Z utes (Derek, Bill and Ian and John Anderson (visitors from Bowen)), Armstrong Siddeley (Ric), Daimler (Warren), three Morris Minors (Kristine, Pete and Norm), half a Mini (Derek had a foot in the Mini camp as well), MG (John & Marilyn), Triumph Herald (Nigel & Shelley), Dennis Fire engine (Frank), Swift (Adrienne), Morris Cowley (Ray) and a Riley (Mal) - an excellent roll-up!

Congratulations to our visitors from Bowen, Ian and John Anderson in their beautifully restored Morris Z ute, who took home one of the trophies. My thanks to Bill Honniball and others who helped pack up the tent and banner at the end of the day because the Club Captain had to ‘shoot through’ about lunchtime to be in ‘Rocky’ that night.

President's run 22 June 2014With a clear blue sky and brilliant sunshine, it was a perfect day for a drive around Townsville and out to Pallarenda. Frank (‘El Presidente’) distributed the route for the day and set off, chauffeur-driven of course as ‘El Presidents’ are, in the Swift to lead the way, and being the prettiest (the Swift, that is) albeit the slowest vehicle in the group, to get a head start. Then followed Bill & Jean (Morris Z), Robert & Joan (Mazda 323), Derek (Mini ), Warren & Miriam (Daimler) - actually, Miriam was ‘picked up’ along the way, Ken & Jo (Peugoet), George & Sandra, Mal & Jenny, and Roger (all in ‘moderns’) with Mal, Jim and Bic (Riley) bringing up the rear. Unfortunately the Plymouth developed clutch problems, so Denis & Pam decided to return home and meet us at Pallarenda in their ‘modern’.The run took us out along University Road past Lavarack Barracks and the 5km of road works re-aligning the

Bruce Highway and the construction of the railway overpass. Turning left on to the Stuart Bypass Road (Port Access Road) provided an opportunity to get those pistons moving and blow away the cobwebs along the 13 kms of open road to the bridge across the lower Ross River. At a more sedate pace we proceeded through the CBD, North Ward and Rowes Bay and out to Cape Pallarenda Road for afternoon tea - a most enjoyable run!

I t was good to see Robert and Joan Poole and Jim Whalan out and enjoying the drive, as they have not been at all well in recent times.Mal Lorimer

A little car humourWhat’s the good thing about Fords? They come out of the factory with the problem circled.

Did you know CHEVROLET is an acronym? Can Hear Every Valve Rattling On Long Extended Trips

Betty was sitting on a lawn sunning and reading, when she was startled by a Buick Enclave crashing through a hedge and coming to rest on her lawn. She helped the elderly driver out and sat him on a lawn chair. “My goodness,” she exclaimed, “you are quite old to be driving!” “Yes”, he replied, “I am old enough that I don’t need a license.”“What....NO LICENSE?” “Nope! The last time I went to my doctor he examined me, and asked if I had a driving license. I told I did have one and handed it to him. He took scissors out of a drawer, cut the license into pieces, threw them in the wastebasket and said, ‘You won’t be need this anymore.’ So, I thanked him and left.”
