Chairmanβs LetterDear Brothers, Parents and Friends of Beta (the people who make a difference!):
As the Beta Foundationβs newly appointed chairman, it gives me considerable pleasure to personally share with you our 2009 Annual Report. It was another banner year for our Fraternityβs educational foundation β namely because we took this year-long opportunity to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Betaβs acclaimed Men of Principle initiative.
The succeeding pages do an excellent job of reporting on the improvements and achievements of our Foundation this past year. Thatβs why I believe one of the most important things I can do as Chairman is to remind every single donor of just how grateful our board of directors is for the generous financial gifts they provide. The Foundationβs donors are the ones who bring all of Betaβs award-winning leadership programs and services to life β year, after year, after year. Beta can only accomplish its work with your help and support. You are indeed the people who make a difference!
For that, I say thank you. Thank you!
Specifically, I cannot miss this opportunity to thank the 2,679 donors who rallied together in FY09 to surpass our annual Beta Leadership Fund goal of $703,070. A total of $721,345 was raised to support all of the Foundationβs undergraduate-focused programs, a 2.5% increase over the original $703k goal. In these economic times, only one word will suffice in describing such an accomplishment: WOW!
Of course, it is no surprise that, since the Foundation uses a conservative smoothing technique as a basis for calculating what may be distributed from our educational endowment funds each year (four percent of the prior 12-quarter fund average), an increase
"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." - John F. Kennedy
in gifts to this yearβs Beta Leadership Fund will be necessary in order to support all of the Foundationβs educational programs. This reality stems primarily from the number of quarters that have lower fund balances resulting from the economic downturn of the last two years.
As a result, our Foundation Board has concluded that we must raise $850,000 through the annual Beta Leadership Fund this year to βcover the funding gapβ that will not be met from our endowment funds. This is a 17.84% increase over what we raised last year.
Yes, it is indeed a big jump, but with some 125,000 alumni across North America β 90,000 for whom we have at least one form of contact information β there is every reason to be enthusiastic and aggressive in driving toward achievement of this important BLF goal. After all, some 7,000 young Betas in all corners of North America are depending upon us!
So, there are two quotes come to mind these days as I reflect on the work of the Beta Foundationβ¦
βDonβt give βtil it hurts. Give βtil it feels good.β
Likewiseβ¦
βI have learned that you should not go through life with a catcherβs mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.β
One of the great things about Beta alumni is we like to βthrow something back,β donβt we?!
In the coming days, we will be in contact personally, electronically and through direct mail keeping every

single Beta alumnus, undergraduate, parent and Friend of Beta aware of the Foundationβs progress in terms of leadership program effectiveness and solicitation success. When you hear from a member of our board of directors or our Foundation Director in Oxford, Jonathan Brant, Miami β75, please renew your support of the Men of Principle initiative. Simply put, βGive βtil it feels good!β
Finally, I would like to recognize our two outgoing Foundation Board members, Christopher D. Miller, Kansas State β86 and Jeffrey N. Newton, Miami β77. Both have been so instrumental in providing the resources and leadership necessary to push the Men of Principle initiative and our Fraternityβs educational Foundation forward. Their contributions in both insight and encouragement have been instrumental. And we are grateful.
As well, Iβd like to congratulate our outgoing Foundation Board Chairman, Michael G. Feinstein, MIT β82, for being recently elected General Treasurer by the 170th General Convention. Mikeβs leadership on the
board since 2002 has been unmatched, and we are so thankful. Now, Betas everywhere have the benefit of his service as General Treasurer. Indeed, we are blessed beyond belief.
Brother and friends, with the Men of Principle initiative having celebrated 10 years of achievement, now is not the time to rest on our laurels. As far as Iβm concerned, weβre just getting started!!!
Thanks again to all brothers, parents and Friends of Beta who make Beta Theta Pi a fraternity of purpose and relevance in the lives of so many young men. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many young Betas who are the future of our Fraternity and, in fact, the entire Greek community!

Beta Foundation Merit ScholarshipsThe Beta Theta Pi Foundationβs merit scholarship program, instituted in 1949 by the Beta Theta Pi Board of Trustees, has enabled our members to achieve their academic endeavors by providing important financial assistance.
Beta Theta Pi offered 65 scholarships β totaling $82,175 β to undergraduate and graduate student members of the Fraternity as well as sons and daughters of Betas who excelled in the areas of academics, chapter leadership and campus/community involvement. Their achievements and leadership range from officer roles within the chapter, student government and interfraternity council, to honorary societies such as Order of Omega, Phi Eta Sigma and Golden Key. This yearβs scholarship recipients are active in varsity athletics, university-wide organizations and philanthropy. They are often Eagle Scouts, community volunteers, youth coaches and tutors.
For more information about next yearβs opportunities, log on to www.betathetapi.org. Scholarship forms and details will be available on the web site in early February. The deadline for submission is April 1. All scholarships will be awarded prior to the 171st General Convention in Washington DC.

Connecting βthe Beta Spiritβ with our Principled Future
Endowed gifts from family and friends of Betaβs past president, Peter F. Griener, Minnesota β51,
The Leadership College provides leadership training and education for up-and-coming leaders of Beta chapters
and colonies. Conducted during the Fraternityβs General Convention, this yearβs program curriculum focused
on Stephen Coveyβs best-selling book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
Embracing Betaβs Interfraternal ResponsibilityThe Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI),
hosted by the North-American Interfraternity Conference, is a five-day co-educational leadership institute that focuses on personal and chapter values, leadership development,
team building and the art of building community.
Recruiting Men of Principle to Build Beta Theta Pi
The Men of Principle Scholarship Grant Program supports chapters and colonies by helping them award merit scholarships
to non-affiliated males who have distinguished themselves inside and outside the classroom. Applicants are not required to join the Fraternity, but it is through the application and interview process that Beta chapters and colonies meet some of the most
accomplished, achievement-oriented young men on campus.

The Foundation is pleased to recognize those who have chosen to leave a legacy for the future of Beta Theta Pi through their will or estate plans. The Bridge Builder Society honors those loyal brothers and friends who have followed the example set by that famous βold manβ immortalized by Miss Will Allen Dromgoole, one who builds the bridge for the young man who will follow after him.
The Bridge Builder
An old man going a lone highway Came in the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm vast, both deep and wide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The swollen stream was as naught to him; But he stopped when safe on the farther side And built a bridge to span the tide.
βOld man,β said a fellow pilgrim near, βYou are wasting your strength in labor here; Your journey will end with the closing day, You never again will pass this way. Youβve crossed the chasm deep and wide Why build you this bridge at eventide?β
The laborer lifted his old gray head, βGood friend, in the path I have come,β he said, βThere followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm which has been naught to me To that young man may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim. Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.β
~ Miss Will Allen Dromgoole

Nancy Hutchins, wife of Stu Hutchins, Idaho β52It has often been said that Beta Sweethearts love this Fraternity every bit as much as their husbands β and sometimes even more! That may be why it was none too shocking when the Beta Foundation was notified in fiscal 2009 of an impending estate gift from Nancy Hutchins, wife of Stu Hutchins, Idaho β52. By making the Beta Foundation the sole beneficiary of her IRA, $268,826 was provided in February to advance the Men of Principle initiative. Consistent with Foundation Board policy, $50,000 was directed to the Beta Leadership Fund, with the $218,826 balance being deposited into the Foundation endowment. What a way to impact young Betas today β and forever!

C. Yardley Chittick, MIT β22One of Betaβs modern day legends, C. Yardley Chittick, MIT β22 never lost his zest for life β or Beta Theta Pi. Having attended the last 10 years or so of Beta Conventions, he became a crowd favorite as he would sing the MIT fight-song on stage during the cherished Beta Countdown. Believe it or not, Yardley was interviewed and offered a job right out of college by Thomas Edison (who he turned down), as well as attended boarding
school with Humphrey Bogart (whom he really didnβt like).
During the Upon These Principles capital campaign that was launched publicly by the Beta Foundation at the 164th General Convention in 2003, Yardley joined with Jan and John C. Thietje, South Dakota β61 and Jon A. Steiner, Willamette β63, to create The Legends Fund β a named endowment fund that sponsors young Betas annually to The Leadership College at Convention.
Yardley lived to the ripe old age of 107. During his lifetime, Yardley gifted $10,000 to The Legends Fund and, upon his death on July 18, 2008, provided another $500 to the Beta Leadership Fund through his will. Even in his passing, Yardleyβs zest for life continues β ensuring that generations of young men who follow get to experience the annual tradition he so loved and treasured β the Beta Convention.

F. Richard Weaver, Kenyon β44A member of that great old Beta Alpha chapter at Kenyon College, Brother Weaver was a loyal Foundation donor over the years to the Beta Leadership Fund. Providing consistent gifts year after year, Brother Weaver also made estate plans to provide a percentage of his estate to both the Baird Fund and Beta Theta Pi Foundation upon his passing. Thankfully, $1,000 was received by the Foundation last November, which was directed to the Beta Leadership Fund to advance Betaβs award-winning leadership programs and the acclaimed Men of Principle initiative.

The Beta Theta Pi Foundation has been blessed over the years as a result of so many Betas, Sweethearts and Friends of Beta giving gifts for the creation and perpetuation of named endowment funds. These gifts of generosity were contributed for a variety of purposes, and they all work together to provide for todayβs β and tomorrowβs β generation of young Beta leaders.
Thankfully, with a long-term investment perspective β one overseen by the Beta Theta Pi Foundation Board of Directors and a cadre of capable investment advisors β these funds continue to grow in value and impact.
By official policy, all named endowment funds are subject to the boardβs β4% of the 12-quarter averageβ annual distribution guideline. Calculated each December 31st for the coming yearβs fiscal budget, this policy allows for generous distributions from each fund annually, while at the same time emphasizing compounding growth for the benefit of future endeavors of Beta students, leaders and organizational priorities.

"An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know.
It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't."
- Anatole France
Annual and Lifetime Giving SocietiesThe Beta Leadership Fund (BLF) is the lifeline of the Beta Theta Pi Foundation which supports essential educational and leadership programs. It is funded by gifts from Beta alumni, friends and families. The BLF welcomed 2,679 total donors in fiscal 2009, including 188 new alumni donors. Gifts totaling $721,345 were received (not including estate gifts.) BLF gifts underwrite the Men of Principle initiative, all educational training of emerging leaders and our professional development staff in Oxford. In turn, the General Fraternity is afforded the opportunity to increase services to chapters, colonies and advisors.
Also included in this section are the Fraternityβs Lifetime Giving Societies, which reflect donorsβ cumulative gifts for their lifetime, whether it be to the BLF, chapter funds or named leadership/scholarship funds.
The following list, in chapter order, reflects donations made to all funds June 1, 2008, through May 31, 2009. Consult the legend (throughout the listing) for symbols that depict the various annual and lifetime giving societies.

"All men by nature desire knowledge."
- Aristotle
Dear Gentlemen,
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the support you showed your brother, Michael Vieira, when his father passed away. I truly believe the caring support you showed him was the main reason he was able to continue his studies during the first semester of school. Michaelβs father was also a Beta at Union College in New York. He would be pround to know that you added a brick with his name to the Foundation Office walkway in Oxford, that was such a thoughtful tribute to him.
Your contiued support of Michael is evident when I talk with him. He is enjoying living in the house and I think it is good that he has the steady company of a fine group of young men as he heals with his loss.
Sincerely,
Peggy Vieira Mother of Michael Vieira, Minnesota β11 and wife of Edward Vieira, Union β73

The Foundationβs milestone annual recognition club, The John Reily Knox Club recognizes Betaβs most loyal annual donors who provide a gift of $1,500 or more.
βThis Fraternity has come down to us as a precious legacy. We have a distinct and definite obligation to cherish it, to add to it and to transmit it to those who are to follow after us in Beta Theta Pi. It is an inspiring thought that idealism persists through the ages. An even finer conception is that of adding to such a treasure to make it more valuable, more potent, to another generation.β

50 | Beta Theta Pi Foundation
In the finest tradition of our Fraternity, benefits flow to our young men from those who have gone before. Each of us is asked to help provide these benefits in turn. To promote our educational and charitable purposes, the Beta Theta Pi Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, was created to attract and receive gifts to support leadership and scholarship opportunities.
Cash or Check: This is the most popular method for making a donation to Beta Theta Pi. The Foundationβs address is P.O. Box 6277, Oxford, Ohio 45056.
Credit Card: Beta Theta Pi accepts VISA, American Express, MasterCard and Discover. This method can be used for monthly, quarterly and yearly contributions.
Appreciated Stock/Securities: Multiple benefits are realized when using appreciated stock as a means for making a gift to the Beta Theta Pi Foundation. Our professional staff in Oxford can work with you and your
financial advisor to make a gift of this nature, which can benefit the Foundationβs award-winning leadership programs, while at the same time provide a charitable tax-benefit to the donor.
Corporate Matching Gifts: Numerous companies match an employeeβs personal donation to non-profit, tax exempt foundations. Check the listing of companies affiliated with the Foundation on page 41, or ask if your employer participates in a gift-matching program.
Endowments and Memorials/Tributes: The Beta Theta Pi Foundation can establish a special endowment or memorial gift in perpetuity to meet your personal desires and estate plans. Please contact the Foundation for details.
On-line: Make a gift or pledge electronically at www.BetaThetaPi.org/gift.
Planned Gifts/Bequests: Consider a gift of personal assets through your will. The Foundation will work with you and your estate planner in designing a planned gift that meets your short- and long-term financial goals. Planned gifts include, but are not limited to: cash, bonds, stock, securities, personal property, retirement plan assets and insurance policies.
For more information or assistance, please contact the Beta Theta Pi Foundation at 800-800-BETA or email our staff at:
