WELCOME

Congratulations on your successful application to the course. This will probably be the most intense and rigorous experience in education you will have had so far. There is obviously a great deal of hard work ahead, but the work is enjoyable, fulfilling and rewarding. You will be pursuing your love of art, design and media practice every day and will be able to develop your work to a very high standard.

The course will require a very responsible and individual approach to working practice; high levels of attendance and commitment are crucial. The recommended working hours for the course, including independent study, are 37 hours per week and your timetabled sessions will run throughout the week. Please do not arrange any part-time work on weekdays between 09:00 and 16:00, your normal teaching day, and we strongly recommend that you do not undertake more than 16 hours of part-time work per week.

You may also have occasional days finishing at 17:00.

Your first day with us is on Monday 2 September and is a 09:30 start.

One of the highlights of the year is the educational visit in February 2020. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit galleries, draw, photograph and collect material for studio-set projects and to thoroughly enjoy yourself in the evenings. Participation on the trips is optional and further details will be given during the Induction Week, but you might like to think about saving some money over the summer.

Most artists, designers and media practitioners regard their Foundation year as one of their most important, and former students often come back to see us with very fond memories of their time here. Having such a beautiful campus, enthusiastic staff, great facilities, and of course living in Bournemouth, all have enormous advantages; I am sure that you will really enjoy it.

SUMMER PROJECT

For the summer project you are asked to prepare a new digital portfolio of your recent work. This will be added to and developed throughout your time on the Foundation course. We ask that you use a blog/web format such as WIX or Wordpress to start a blog, and have a section for your portfolio. Please consider how you can best “capture” your work for presentation in the digital portfolio by taking care to photograph your work or scan it suitably.

Your digital portfolio is required to consist of 12 – 15 slides, this should show a mixture of both finished and developmental work.

If you do not have a computer please be aware you can also do the above on a phone, using the phone’s camera or scanning apps. You can also make the suggested back-up file on a phone. You will present this to your tutor in your first tutorial. If you already have an online presence such as Tumblr please stick to that for the moment and update your portfolio as necessary.

UCASDuring the summer we also encourage you to consider conducting early research into degree courses that are available, particularly those here at AUB. Our Compact scheme gives you an excellent opportunity to progress internally to our degree courses if you perform well on the Foundation course.

When you make a university application through UCAS you will be required to provide a list of your exam qualifications with dates and the examining body. It would therefore be useful if you compiled a list of all your examinations to this effect over the summer and bring this in, along with copies of all your results (GCSE and A-levels or equivalent qualifications) on the first day of the course. This will save you considerable stress at a much busier time in the year.

COURSE EQUIPMENT

This is a recommended list of what you will need for a normal studio session. Other more specialist sessions may need you to bring other materials or equipment. You will be advised of these requirements on your project briefs. Essential materials: (please bring these materials with you on your first day)

— Notepads — Scissors — Rubber / putty rubber — Set of pencils — Glue stick — Set of basic brushes of different widths, flat and round — Metal ruler — Craft knife — Roll of masking tape — Set of black fineline art pens different gauges — Toolbox / craft box to store materials

Please be prepared to replenish the materials listed above throughout the year. We will supply you with your first A3 and A5 AUB sketchbooks. We will also supply you with an A2 plastic portfolio case for transporting and temporary storage of large work; this is essential for life drawing classes.

We will supply you with a number of printer credits. Once these are used, you will need to pay for replacement credits throughout the year to cover the cost of your prints on AUB printers.

Around Christmas you will probably need to purchase a portfolio; it will be best to wait for guidance from staff on the particular type to order. These portfolios will normally cost about £40, depending on the type that you order.

Course Trip CostsThe confirmed destinations for 2020 and the cost of each trip will be provided during induction week. To give an indication of costs, last year trips were organised to Berlin and Florence, each costing approximately £380.

You will need to pay for the trip of your choice in full within a two-week period in September 2019. You will be able to pay online through our secure AUB website during these weeks and not before or after. Bookings are paid in full, are non-refundable, and cannot be transferred to another student, so please consider your choice of destination carefully before you pay.

Important information for Tier 4 Visa students If you are an international student holding a Tier 4 Visa, unfortunately you will not be able to apply for a place on one of the visits, as it is a Home Office requirement that you attend the University for a minimum of 15 hours of classroom study per week during term time.

PREPARING FOR YOUR COURSE

Computer EquipmentWe have extensive Apple Mac computers with appropriate software throughout the studios. The software is as up-to-date as possible. You are NOT required to purchase a computer as a course requirement. However, many students prefer the convenience of working on their own computer and if you are considering purchasing one, the following specification is recommended:

— Laptop: Mac Book / Mac Book Pro — Desktop: iMac / Mac Mini

Some students work effectively with the PC equivalent but there are occasional compatibility problems between Mac and PC. Student discounts are often available when purchasing PCs or Macs, so you may wish to wait until you have started your course before making any purchase.

Recommended SoftwareAdobe Creative Suite.

Software Provided by AUBOnce you enrol on the course you will be able to download Microsoft Office 365 to your personal computer, so don’t pay extra when buying a computer to purchase MS Office. You get it free as an AUB student.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE FIRST DAY

Notepads, pens and pencils, the essential materials list and a smile.

COURSE TRIPS

The overseas educational visit is an exciting opportunity. It gives you the chance to absorb a wealth of both historical and contemporary culture. These trips have proven to be very successful and many of our students choose to participate.

The trips are planned for February 2020. There is a high demand for places, and in previous years trips have become fully booked. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

If you would like to sign up, please ensure in good time that you have a current full passport to satisfy EU regulations and a European Health Insurance Card. (EHIC) You will need to supply Passport information at the time of booking. If you do not hold a UK passport, please check to see if you require a visa to travel before booking a trip. This information is available on the Embassy’s website of the country you wish to visit.

If you do require a visa, you will be expected to apply for it in good time. Please be aware that it is your responsibility to obtain the appropriate visa to travel within the time required.

All trips are subject to availability of flights and appropriate student numbers. In the event of an international crisis the trip will only be cancelled if advised by the Foreign Office.

If you are joining us from overseas, International Orientation takes place from 29 August – 30 August; details of this event will be provided separately.

INDUCTION WEEK

Your first few days at the University will include enrolment and induction events to introduce you to the facilities and services you will be using as a student, as well as the activities and resources on your course. You will receive copies of important documents, including your course handbook.
