Foundation Highlights Around the World in a Day Edition July 2015

From 21st to 27th June, the Foundation’s annual fundraiser Around the World in a Day took place once again, with 70 venues participating in 15 countries. Thanks to the kilometres collected by our intrepid volunteers, collectively we travelled 30,275km, a fantastic effort by everyone!

From Aberdeen to Ankara, from Milan to Copenhagen, in multiple languages, in weather ranging from drizzle and mist to blue skies and sunshine, the Foundation’s band of amazing volunteers united to demonstrate their commitment to their communities. We were thrilled to be a part of this brilliant team, and we hope this

1. Team members at Ankara HiltonSA came together to hold sale of toys and cookies for local partner Catanka Municipality, and teamed up with the Spinal Cord Association to hold a show starring young disabled people. 2. Conrad Dublin, DoubleTree by Hilton Dublin – Burlington Road, Hilton Dublin and Hilton Dublin Airport teamed up in a 12.1mile walk around Dublin passing each hotel and culminating in a BBQ at Hilton Dublin Airport. 3. DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre saw two events as part of their AWD. Team members completed a sponsored walk up a local hill while an exercise bike was in continuous use at the hotel at the same time. A BBQ was held for all participants at the end of the day. 4. 9. Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona got on their bikes to collect their kilometres. 10. Hilton Florence Metropole and Hilton Garden Inn Florence Novoli joined together to ensure that every piece of exercise equipment in both properties was in continuous use from 8am to 8pm. 11. Hilton Garden Inn Krakow held a series of activities throughout the week, and as a result they topped the leaderboard with a staggering 3,405km collected, including 160km on one day by team member Dominika alone. 12. Hilton Leeds City kept the exercise bikes in action with a 12-hour challenge in Livingwell, in addition to a 5K Canal Run. 13. Hilton London Kensington and local partner Rugby Portobello Trust completed a 12.6 mile walk around the borough of Kensington and Chelsea (‘excluding diversions due to getting lost’) with participants dressed as the Cookie Monster and a bunch of grapes. 17. Hilton London Stansted Airport collected their KM by continuously manning exercise bikes in the foyer. 18. Hilton London Tower Bridge collected their KM by organising a 24 hour cycle challenge. 19.Team members from Hilton Molino Stucky Venice completed a 22km bike ride followed by lunch and a visit to the Altino museum. 20. Hilton Munich City and Hilton Munich Park joined together to collect their KM by placing 2 treadmills and 3 exercise bikes in front of the hotel. 21. Hilton Reading collected their KM on exercise bikes placed in the foyer. 22. organised a community sports day with activities including running, cycling and special kid’s entertainment. A BBQ was held for all participants at the end of the event.

23. Hilton Nuremberg collected 170km on their Around the World Hike. 24. Team members from Hilton Newcastle Gateshead got on exercise bikes and rowing machines placed in the hotel lobby to collect their KM. 25. Hilton Swindon and Hilton Bath City joined together for a walk along the national trails path that runs along Hadrian’s Wall. 26. Waldorf Astoria Rome Cavalieri held their event at Castel di Guido where both children and adults participated in a run. 28. London Hilton on Park Lane completed a sponsored walk through London. 29. Hilton Watford organised a Fun Day with Colnbrook School where they held various activities to collect their kilometres.

“A team of 15 set off a misty and muggy Saturday morning. After 18.9 miles everyone enjoyed a well earned rest back at the bunkhouse with a BBQ (it’s handy having the hotel chef with you on a weekend away - thank you Richard). The team started again the following morning walking through rain and showers and completed another 15.3 miles on day two ending at Chester’s Roman Fort. One funny incident is that our FOM Paulo’s trainers literally fell apart at the end of the weekend!” Jo Vickers, Hilton Swindon

30. Hilton Budapest City kept busy this year and collected their kilometres by dancing Zumba, running and ping pong competitions. 31. Hilton Liverpool organised activities such as hook a duck, beat the goalie, bake sale and face paint for their AWD event. 32. Team members at Hilton London Hyde Park walked up and down the stairs at the hotel to collect their KM. 33. Hilton Leicester started off AWD with a cycle ride around Rutland Water and held a cycle event during the week as well to raise funds for local partner Wishes 4 Kids.

DoubleTree by Hilton Lisbon - Fontana Park supported the Salvador Association

Team members at DoubleTree by Hilton Tower of London clocked up the miles on exercise bikes in the lobby wearing fancy dress.

Hilton Birmingham Bromsgrove held a series of activities throughout the week, with housekeeping clocking up their walking around the hotel, a cycle-to-work event, and team members entering Conquer the KMs

Hilton Bonn held a series of activities throughout the week

Hilton Cardiff hosted a Cardiff bay cycle challenge along with a bike challenge in the hotel lobby. Hilton Copenhagen Airport held a day of running and collected an amazing 600km.

Hilton Croydon held a family fun day and guests clocked up the KM by playing football and dancing Zumba. A BBQ was held for all participants at the end of the day.

Team members at Hilton Dunkeld House took part in a 5 mile walk and 12 mile cycle.

Team members at Hilton London Canary Wharf ran and cycled around the Isle of Dogs. For those who preferred to stay inside, a human horse race took place in the banquet room.

Hilton Maidstone teamed up with recently-promoted Maidstone United and held a mascot race open day. Miles were also collected from pedometers from football players during matches.

Hilton Newbury Centre collected KM by placing 4 exercise bikes in the town centre and encouraging people to take part. Hilton Newbury North organised a walk from Newbury North to Newbury Castle and afterwards they enjoyed a BBQ at the hotel. Team members from Hilton Newport were on the go all week, as duty manager swore pedometers, exercise bikes werein action and team members hiked up Penyfan in the Brecon Beacons. They also joined Hilton Bath City and Hilton Swindon on their walk along Hadrian’s Wall.

A message from Hilton London Kensington and Rugby Portobello Trust

This year, we introduced a brand-new competition called Conquer the KMs. The competition ran every day during the campaign week and venues were judged on the highest number of kilometres collected per participant for that day. The Grand Prize for the overall winning venue was a £2,000 grant to a local charity partner. The winners on each of the other six days went into a draw for the Runner Up Prize of a £1,000 grant to a local partner.

The hotel which conquered the KMs overall was Hilton Birmingham Bromsgrove, thanks to a supreme effort made by single participant Ben Szulak on Thursday 25th June who collected a staggering 241 kilometres in a single day on an exercise bike in the hotel gym. The hotel has chosen to donate £2,000 to Primrose Hospice.

The runner up venue was Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona with a total of 62km collected per participant on Sunday 21 June as part of their cycling masterclass with local sports club Can Felipa. They have chosen to donate their £1,000 grant to local partner Centre Obert Neus Puig of Fundació Trinijove.

With an emphasis on youth

Around the World in a Day is a fantastic opportunity for pupils of all ages and abilities to be active and help make a difference in their communities.

We also held a special Schools Competition for the Grand Prize of £1,000, judged on the highest kilometres per participant. We were delighted to announce that the inaugural winner of the Schools Competition was Capital City Academy who collected a total of 144km and a total of 2km per participant. They were fundraising to help members of a local youth dance group buy uniforms to compete in the world championships.
