Stockport CollegeUAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design

At Stockport College we believe that the most effective way of making the transition from A level to an art and design degree is to complete a Diploma Foundation in Art & Design. Unlike other Art Foundation programmes in the area, we deliver the University of the Arts London (UAL) programme. UAL is the only specialist art and design awarding body in the country, which means that our Foundation course is written by art and design specialists for art and design specialists. The overriding ethos of the programme is to introduce and cultivate those skills that are fundamental for students to deal with the academic rigour and intellectual demands of higher education.Throughout the academic year we ask our students to interpret projects in an imaginative and personal way in either an art or design context. We promote the core concepts of experimentation, innovation, and ambition as a way of thinking and working. Our job is to train students to visually engage with and respond to the world around them. We encourage students to develop their own visual language and to build confidence and professionalism in the communication and presentation of their own ideas. We are looking for students who are willing to face new challenges, who work hard and who can remain open minded. Our dedicated team are committed to providing a creative and supportive environment to enable our students to find out what they are good at and the best way for them to grow and mature as art and design students. At Stockport College, we provide a nurturing working environment. What sets us apart is that we offer specialist areas of study run by subject specific staff and we supply each student with their own studio space. That space belongs to the student to make their own, to establish as a base and a location in which they can create a visual interface between themselves, their peers and their tutors. Our excellent reputation for placing students on degree courses is testament to the strength of our Foundation programme. Each year, some of our students remain at Stockport to study degrees in Graphics, Illustration and Photography, while others choose to travel further afield. In the last 3 years our students have progressed onto courses at Central St. Martins, Camberwell College ofArts, Goldsmiths College, Wimbledon School of Art, London College of Fashion, Glasgow School of Art, Kingston University, The University of Brighton and The University of Leeds, to name a few.The Art Foundation course at Stockport offers a potentially life changing experience. Our philosophy is that a Foundation year should be one of self discovery, personal and creative development and playfulness. We expect students to participate fully in all studio activities to ensure that they gain a breadth of experience and in return, we provide the conditions to enable students to flourish and fulfil their ambitions. Above all we hope that students enjoy their year with us, that they produce a body of work that they are proud of and that they make some good friendships along the way.

VWithin a friendly environment, I was encouraged and guided by a team of knowledgeable and supportive tutors. Whilst embarking on my new journey

of self discovery they embraced my enthusiasm and passion for art, enabling me to develop my work happily and with confidence. This rewarding experience gave me the opportunity to apply for, and gain a place at Salford University studying on a B.A.Hons Degree Course in Visual Arts. I am

certain I would not be in this position had I not had such a positive experience at Stockport College. Chris McMurray 2009/10

It was hard work, but a real pleasure to be a part of the Stockport College Foundation course. The teaching staff enthused and guided us to do our best, stretch our minds and widen our creative vision, preparing us very well for our future. What more could you ask for? Pauline Chorlton 2009/10

After finishing my A levels I wanted to gain much more experience. The Foundation course has opened my eyes to various new techniques and methods for approaching new projects. I have developed as an art and design student, but have also gained confidence and good

organisational skills throughout the year. The course has given me the relevant tools and understanding of art and design in order to progress onto Northumbria University next year. Katie Pearson 2011/12
