I am so proud of my alma mater!

UCA has a wonderful faculty/staff that engages with students and points them to Jesus. UCA maintains strong academics and a well-balanced extra-curricular program that includes

music, athletics, horsemanship, a hydroponic garden, and more. A lot of schools left off Home Economics and Industrial Arts a long time ago, but UCA continues to teach these important practical skills. I truly believe that the UCA experience is second-to-none!

One of my goals, as the FoundationONE President, is to help alumni and friends treat this great school as if it were a most treasured member of their own family. When a school has familial commitment, it makes all the difference in the world, and commitment is something all of us can give, no matter our personal financial situation.

UCA students and graduates show, through the impact they have on the world, the true value of Adventist education. Our world needs more UCA students—young people like Johnathan Saavedra—who are willing to work hard and stand for a cause (see story page 4). Will you, in 2019, join me in sacrificing to grow the endowment so that more teens can enroll and partici-pate in the amazing life-changing UCA experience?

    Mindy Weber, ’85

    President’s Message

Johnathan’s parents had an ongoing conflict over Christian education. His mom, a former Catholic, wanted her two children in Adventist schools. His dad, raised an Adventist, preferred to save the money.

His first year at UCA Johnathan got involved in music—something he was comfortable with. This year, he is pursuing a new interest—Acro/Soul Gymnastics. He says, “I was interested in Acro last year, but lacked the confidence. Then, this past summer, I worked in construc-tion and gained a lot of physical strength. This gave me the self-as-surance I needed to join the team. I enjoy Acro!”

Johnathan is not only hard-work-ing, he is also academically moti-vated. His campus job is tutoring other students, especially in math and science. He says, “I’ve always been fascinated with science. I love to do experiments and discover how things work.” When asked what his most memorable UCA experi-ence was, he responded, “It was when Mrs. C took our biology class to the beach to study marine life. That was so much fun!”

Johnathan is still contemplating his future. He says, “I know I’m an introvert, so I don’t want a job that requires me to interact all the time with people. Right now I’m thinking about a degree in engineering—possibly chemical or bio-medical engineering.”

Johnathan appreciates the spiritual climate at UCA. He says, “There is no pressure from faculty to grow spiritually. They are available to talk about God if you want to, but they will not push you. Everyone is

allowed to grow at his own pace. I’m still discovering God for myself. Since coming to UCA, I’ve come to realize that there is more to reli-gion than I originally thought.”

Johnathan is the recipient of the very first Roberts Family Scholarship, a named scholarship fund that was established about a year ago (early 2018). He says, I’m very grateful to the Roberts family, and to all the other FoundationONE donors, for giving me this opportunity. Without financial assistance I never would have been able to come to UCA.

    JOHNATHAN. . . Standing for a Cause!

“My family has always had financial difficulties,” says Johnathan. “Mom works hard, but it’s too much for one parent to support two kids in Christian schools. The reason I work so hard, is to prove to Dad that Christian education is worth the sacrifice!”

The Saavedra family lives near Aus-tin, Texas and Johnathan attended San Markos Adventist Junior Acad-emy. When he was in the 10th grade his basketball coach recommended that he check out Upper Columbia Academy for his junior and senior years. Thus it was that Johnathan, his mother, and younger sister came to UCA for Academy Days in the spring of 2017.

As they drove toward campus, Johnathan was amazed at how far away UCA was from the city! He couldn’t imagine a bustling school in such a remote place. But the

students greeted him and included him, and before long he felt right at home.

In the weeks that followed, Johna-than and his mother had many conversations regarding where Johnathan should enroll. He want-ed to come to UCA, but his mother said it was too far away. “I had to convince her that I was ready; I had to earn her trust,” he says. “That was the first hurdle.”

And then there was the issue of finances. “I worked and saved as much as I could but when we ran the numbers, we discovered that, even with all of us working and sacrificing, we didn’t have enough. Not nearly enough! UCA’s recruiter encouraged me to complete a FoundationONE Scholarship Ap-plication. I did, and Foundation-ONE approved my request. I got to enroll!”

As they approached the intersection, Marsha saw a vehicle coming from the right, but she assumed it would stop at the stop sign. It didn’t!

Marsha (Pflugrad) Ellis, ’65, her husband, Jerry, two cousins, and two dogs

were on their way to Mount Spo-kane for a day of fun. It was an idyllic September day, 2017.

“The sudden and unexpected impact was horrific!” says Jerry, who was riding in the passenger seat (the side of the vehicle that received the hit). Everyone was shaken and banged up. Marsha, the driver, looked over at Jerry. His body had been thrown upward and forward by the impact, and his head had hit the visor and was bleeding profusely. He was just sitting there stunned. Shortly he began gasping for air and, between gasps, repeating, “I can’t breathe; I can’t breathe.” (The shoulder strap on impact had knocked the wind out of him).

Within a couple of minutes Jerry was able to catch his breath, and he got out of the car, along with the others, and walked around while they waited for the ambu-lance to arrive. Jerry says, “I felt no pain. I was in shock.”

Later, at the hospital, Jerry began to feel the pain. Searing pain!

Jerry’s injuries were very seri-ous. His neck was broken in three places, including C2. Injuries to the spinal cord at any level have the potential to remove communica-

tion to the rest of the body below that point. Due to the high level of the C2 vertebrae, at the top of the neck, such an injury is most often fatal or leaves the individual fully paralyzed.

Jerry underwent six hours of sur-gery, then recovery and rehab. "But God took care of me all the way through," he says. Jerry now has a steel rod in his neck and he can’t turn his head very far. He also has some tingling in his fingers, but, he can walk!

Following the accident, Jerry got an insurance settlement. He says, “It was free money, we had to do something good with it!” He and Marsha talked it over and de-cided to give the major portion to FoundationONE. Marsha says, “I’ve always loved UCA, but we never thought we’d be able to give a large gift. I’m sorry for my husband’s trauma, but I’m happy to be able to give to FoundationONE, so more kids can attend this wonderful school. Kids don’t have a chance without Christian education!”

All of us are indebted to the past, to those who preceded us. We drink from wells we did not dug. We enjoy liberties we had no part in winning. We share faith that is based on a foundation we did not lay.

At the same time, we are seeds of the future, for those who succeed us. We dream and envision and set things in motion. It’s unlikely we’ll ever (on this earth) meet the people we seek to benefit when we make a final gift.

Mitch Albom said it best: “Sacrifice is a part of life. It’s supposed to be. It’s not something to regret. It’s something to aspire to.”
