Raleigh appears to be changing its brand from the city of oaks to the city of road races. Fortunately, access to First Baptist will be minimally affected by the June 1 Ironman triathlon. All of our parking lots will be accessible but traffic flow will be slightly altered. Auto traffic will be confined to the right lane on

Edenton Street and Salisbury Street by the Capitol and on Hillsborough Street from Salisbury to McDowell Street. Runners will be in the left lane in those blocks. Dashboard passes will be available on Sunday, May 25, or by calling the church.

On Friday, May 2, a mission vision became a reality when the North Carolina Baptist Dental Bus made a stop at First Baptist. From 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., dentists and hygienists performed dental work on 29 patients who are clients of the Clothing Ministry. From extractions to cleanings, patients were able to receive free dental care. This effort was led by FBC members including our very own FBC dentist, Dr. Brad Pressley and his wife Heather, a dental hygienist. Many thanks to Brad and Heather as well as to Dr. Folden Lee and his staff for donating their professional services. Additionally, much appreciation is expressed to those who volunteered their time to share Christ’s love with others. The dental bus

will return in November to serve our Clothing Ministry clients. If you would like to help defray the cost of bringing the dental bus to FBC, please reference dental bus on your contribution.

From the Pastor In the interim following Mike

Morris’ retirement, we are espe-cially grateful for the help Bob Bailey is providing on a part-time basis in administrative areas, but we are also grateful for the extra work others on staff are adding to their already overflowing plates. I thought it might be helpful for you to know who is doing what in this time so that you will know who to go to for what help and realize the need to extend a bit of grace to your staff.

Bob’s schedule will vary some week to week, but it looks like he will need to be in the office much of Monday and Tuesday and parts of Wednesday and Thursday. He is working with the property and finance committees, helping Kiki with calendar coordination, guid-ing HVAC work, helping coordinate various building projects and serv-ing as the liaison to outside groups using our facilities. If you need help in any of these areas, contact Bob in the office (919-832-4485, ext. 207) or by e-mail at [email protected].

In addition to the responsi-bilities Bob has taken on, Trey Davis has agreed to work with the transportation committee, Lynn Lingafelt has taken Mike’s hospital visitation day (Monday), Lin Carter has agreed to work with AV oper-ators on Sunday and to coordinate the Kay Huggins Classic, and Mary Alice Seals will work with the team which provides transportation to church on Sunday for some of our less mobile members. I am currently administering the Mike Morris Fellowship Fund (though I am working on a model to involve more people), serving as liaison to the community ministry commis-sion and its committees, coordi-nating annual church training at the start of the year, and assisting Bob with some aspects of finance.

This is not a complete list of duties left to cover in Mike’s absence. Denise and Kiki are also picking up a few more tasks, like managing the phone system and doing the odd job that just needs to be done; Rodney and Jimmy

April Church Conference Highlights

Guidelines for Stock Gifts

Words of Thanks

Church Conference was convened on Wednesday, April 30, by Greg Clary, moderator.

• Finance: Dennis Ellis, Chair, reported that the loan refinance is complete. A letter will be sent to the congregation about the Stewardship and Capital Campaigns.

• Capital Campaign: Murphy Osborne, Chair, updated the conference on the number of pledges received to date, including a challenge gift of $140,000.

• Church Visioning: Dr. Chapman encouraged everyone to participate in the church planning inventory at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/fbcraleigh or available in hard copy format from Denise Arnold in the church office. A Spiritual Gifts assessment is the next phase of the visioning process. In the fall we will discuss our church heritage, inventory results, and general church trends in an effort to make plans for our future.

• Personnel: Anne Bullard, Chair, brought a motion to allow a housing allowance for Bob Bailey. The conference approved the motion.

• Carolyn Dickens, “Team Celebrate Mike” Chair, made a motion to rename the “Fellowship Fund” to the “Mike Morris Fellowship Fund.” The conference enthusiastically approved the motion. Mike graciously and humbly received the honor.

Jerome Mallette, our former building superintendent, surprised Mike by sharing his gift of singing to close the conference.

Many members make contributions of stock and avoid paying income tax on the long-term capital gain which would be due if the stock were sold. If you are interested in contributing in this manner, consult your tax advisor regarding the effect on your individual tax situation. The church has an account with LPL Financial, a discount broker which minimizes the commission incurred by the church when the stock is sold. To give stock to the church, have your broker

contact LPL Financial at 1-855-575-9656 or transfer the stock by using the LPL DTC number 0075 and the church account number 32304441.

In order for the stock to be sold, our financial administrator Sherri McKeel must contact LPL Financial. When you transfer stock it is very important to let Sherri know immediately. Please contact her at [email protected] or 919-832-4485, ext. 210. n

Dear FBC family,When we searched for a church we could have never imagined finding one where we felt so

welcomed and loved. Raising a handicapped child, especially one with Eleora’s difficulties, is a rollercoaster of a journey and we started out very lost with very little support. The love she has received at FBC has been a blessing of immense proportions. We truly believe God directed us towards all of you knowing we needed your spiritual and emotional support. There are no words that can thank you enough for what you all have done for us. Now that we have to bring Eleora to service with us we were concerned that she would make too much noise and interrupt the service, but everyone seems happy to have her there and that means the world to us!

— The Toomey FamilyDear Church Family,

I want to thank you for your prayers and concern during my surgery and recovery. I have been blessed, by your prayers, with an unexpected quick recovery for a person of my age.

God Bless, Mary Anne Smith

Words from Mike Morris

Mother/Daughter Camp

Goodness Gracious…. When I awakened this morning thinking about the incredibly wonderful ways that you remembered Noel and me at retirement, the words Goodness Gracious came to mind. Most of us have heard and used these words as one expression many times in our lives. Usually the term expresses excitement and surprise—both of which abounded during our last week at First Baptist Church.

The April 27 worship service and recognition and the April 30 Wednesday night surprise event touched us deeply. The Retirement and Personnel committees creatively and thoughtfully captured in word, execution of plan, and atmosphere the joy of our twenty-seven years at FBC. My colleagues, who over the years have made me a better minister through their challenge, love and care for me, gave me a little room to be reflective…

knowing what was ahead. And you the congregation offered affirmation in so many ways…cards, the very generous love offering, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and the much-appreciated quiet, personal and benedictory conversations we had during those last days. Goodness gracious…such surprise and excitement!

But both goodness and gracious originally alluded to the good (or grace) of God. So, as I look at my watch a hundred times on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights now, thinking of you doing and being church at 99 N. Salisbury St, I do thank God for every remembrance of you and whisper as prayer the words, Goodness Gracious.

Thank you all for making our departure a most humbling, inspiring time.

Faithfully,Mike Morris

We went to the Raleigh Baptist Association Mother/Daughter camp at Camp Mundo Vista at the end of April with 8 other mom/daughter pairs from our church. The theme of this year’s camp was from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” To us, this means that you can do anything if you trust God’s plan for you. In keeping with this theme, our favorite camp song is “I’ve Got Confidence,” which we learned during the camp worship service. Our favorite activities were making a pencil bag with the camp’s theme drawn on it and learning about the missionary who serves in Mauritania. From a small

art project to living in an Islamic country, we experienced examples of what it means to trust God and have confidence in ourselves and our faith in any situation. This is something we can remember and rely on every day when life presents us with challenges both small and large.

are doing a few extra things; and church members are taking more responsibility as well. Everyone is pitching in, which is how church ought to work. We won’t promise that nothing will fall between the cracks (a wise mentor once told me that’s what cracks are for!), but we do hope to cover as many bases as we can.

I hope this information is help-ful and welcome any questions or suggestions you have. As soon as we make a bit more progress with our visioning process, we will have a clearer picture of the future staff structure we need and thus, will be able to begin our search for a new staff member. When that time comes, I suspect we will all be ready! CC
