FROM AN ANCIENT HOMILY ON HOLY SATURDAY

Something strange is happening – there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear. He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him, Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: “My Lord be with you all.” Christ answered him: “And with your spirit.” He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: “Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. “I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. Out of love for you and for your descendants I now by my own authority command all who are held in bondage to come forth, all who are in darkness to be enlightened, all who are sleeping to arise. “I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be held a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead. Rise up, work of my hands, you who were created in my image. Rise, let us leave this place, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and we cannot be separated. For your sake I, your God, became your son; I, the Lord, took the form of a slave; I, whose home is above the heavens, descended to the earth and beneath the earth. “For your sake, for the sake of man, I became like a man without help, free among the dead. For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was crucified in a garden. “See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore to you the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands, nailed firmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree. “I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you. “Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly paradise. I will not restore you to that paradise, but I will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you. I appointed cherubim to guard you as slaves are guarded, but now I make them worship you as God. “The throne formed by cherubim awaits you, its bearers swift and eager. The bridal chamber is adorned, the banquet is ready, the eternal dwelling places are prepared, the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The kingdom of heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity.”

EASTER DUTY

Easter Duty is the popular name for the obligation which the Church imposes on all Catholics who have attained the age of reason to confess their sins at least once a year and to receive Holy Communion during the Easter period. The law of annual confession and the law of Easter Communion were established by the 4th Council of the Latern in 1215. Those who willfully neglect to ob-serve these explicit laws are guilty of grievous sin. The Church says that confession once a year and Communion at Easter is the least that a person may do and remain a practicing Catholic. The Church wishes her members to receive the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist often. By a special privilege of Pope Pius VIII for the United States, the time for Easter Communion begins on the First Sunday of Lent and closes on Trinity Sunday (this year celebrated on June 7).

DIVINE MERCY NOVENA

From 1931 to 1938 Our Lord revealed the secrets of His great mercy to St. Faustina. He designated the first Sunday after Easter as the Feast of the Divine Mercy. In preparation for this Feast, He asked that a Novena of Chaplets be started on Good Friday. Jesus said: “By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls.” (Diary, #796). “I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw therefrom strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death. On each day you will bring to My Heart a different group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy, and I will bring all these souls into the house of My Father…”(Diary, # 1209) The inten-tions for the Novena as dictated by Jesus are as fol-lows:

1st day - All mankind, especially all sinners 2nd day - Priests and Religious 3rd day - All devout and faithful souls 4th day - Pagans and those who do not know Jesus 5th day - Heretics and schismatics 6th day - Meek and humble souls and the souls of little children 7th day - Souls who especially venerate and glorify

God’s mercy 8th day - Souls in Purgatory 9th day - Souls who have become lukewarm

Any-one who would like to donate for the Easter Flow-ers may do so by sending in your Easter Flower en-velope as found in your envelope packets, or make an on-line donation marking it “Easter Flowers.”

The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O’Connor on December 28, 1993

The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn

We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have

your babyʹs name inscribed in our “Book of Lifeʺ.

LEGION OF MARY – REGINA MUNDI

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall fol-lowing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more infor-mation on joining this ministry as an active or auxiliary member please contact Melissa Becker at: [email protected]

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

SUBWAY ROSARY

Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gather at Holy Innocents by 10:00am. The group will then proceed to 42nd and Broadway Time Square subway station. We

will be located by the Time Square Shuttle downstairs. We recite 20 decades of the Holy Rosary and return back to Holy Innocents around 12:15. Come for all or

part of the Subway Rosary.

MOVIE KNIGHT

On Thursday, March 26, following the 6PM Mass at Holy Innocents, the silent film La Vie et la Passion de Jésus Christ will be shown in the parish hall. This 45 minute film, composed of 32 scenes covering the most traditional biblical episodes starting with the An-nunciation and ending with the Ascension, offers a lens into the life of Our Lord, presenting viewers with various episodes from the Gospels in a doctrinally-sound fashion.

Produced in 1903, the film predates the French Third Re-public’s adoption of Laïcité, the policy which resulted in the expulsion of France’s religious communities and the limitation of the Church’s influence on French Society.

Viewers will find great spiritual benefit in seeing this pi-ous depiction of Our Lord’s life this Lent. Refreshments will be served.
