THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST - June 24
One day an angel appeared to Zachary and announced that he was to have a son named John, who would prepare Israel for the messiah. Zachary doubted that Eliza-beth, his aged wife, could bear a child.
He asked for a sign, and the angel obliged. Zachary was struck dumb until John’s birth. When the baby was born, the old man cuddled him and celebrated with this prophetic song:
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited his people, he has set them free; and he has established for us a saving power in the House of his servant David, just as he proclaimed, by the mouth of the holy prophets from ancient times, that he would save us from our enemies and from the hands of all those who hate us, and show faithful love to our ancestors, and so keep in mind his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, that he would grant us, free from fear, to be delivered from the hands of our enemies, to serve him in holiness and uprightness in his presence, all our days. And you, little child, you shall be called Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the faithful love of our God in which the rising Sun has come from on high to visit us to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow dark as death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
—Luke 1:68–79 NJB
St. John began his ministry thirty years later. He called people to repent and baptized them in water as a sign of purification. Jesus himself approached John for baptism “Behold the lamb of God,” John declared to the crowds, “who takes away the sin of the world.” He resisted baptizing Jesus, but acquiesced when Jesus explained that he wanted to set an example of righteous behavior.
Herod, the ruler of Galilee, arrested John because he feared the Baptist might foment a rebellion. John had also embittered Herod by condemning his marriage to Herodias, his half-brother’s wife. While in pris-on, John was bothered with doubt about Jesus. He had expected the messiah to come more forcefully with a “winnowing fan in his hand to clear the threshing floor.” Thus, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was really the messiah.
Jesus responded that he fulfilled all the messianic signs, healing the blind, the deaf, the lame, and lepers, raising the dead, and preaching good news to the poor. Then Jesus praised John to the crowds as “more than a prophet” and as the greatest man who ever lived. One evening Herod threw a party for Galilee’s upper crust. Herodias’s daughter entertained, dancing so beautifully that Herod offered to reward her with any-thing she desired. Her mother told her to ask for John the Baptist’s head on a platter. Herod kept his prom-ise. Without even a pretense of a trial, he gave the order and a soldier beheaded John at the prison.
“The Immaculate alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. She seeks souls that will consecrate themselves en-tirely to her, that will become in her hands forceful instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spread of God’s Kingdom.”
- St. Maximilian Kolbe

OUR LADY OF MEDJUGORJE, QUEEN OF PEACE -June 25
PRAYER TO THE QUEEN OF PEACE OF MEDJUGORJE
O Mother of mine, Mother of good-ness, love and mercy I love you in-finitely And I offer myself to You. By means of Your goodness, Your love and Your grace, save me. I desire to be yours. I love you infi-nitely, and desire You to protect me. From the depth of my heart I pray you, Mother of goodness, give me Your goodness. Let me gain Heaven by means of it. I pray You, by Your infinite love, to give me the grace, so that I may love every man, as You have loved Jesus Christ. I pray You to give me the grace To be merciful towards You. * I offer myself completely and desire that you follow my every step. Because You are full of grace. And I desire that I will never forget this. And if, by chance, I should lose grace I pray You to restore it to me once more. Amen. *The phrase “ I pray you to give me the grace to be merciful towards You” means “give me the grace to love your will which is different to mine”
ST. JOSEMARIA ESCRIVA - June 26th
José María Mariano Escrivá y Albás was born to José Escrivá y Corzán and his wife, María de los Dolores Albás y Blanc on 9 January 1902, in the small town of Barbastro, in Huesca, Aragón, Spain, the second of six children and the first of two sons. José Escrivá was a merchant and a partner in a textile company that eventually went bankrupt, forcing the family to relocate in 1915 to the city of Logroño, in the northern province of La Rioja, where he worked as a clerk in a clothing store. Young Josemaría first felt that “he had been chosen for something”, it is reported, when he saw footprints left in the snow by a monk walking barefoot.
With his father’s blessing, Escrivá prepared to be-come a priest of the Catholic Church. He studied first in Logroño and then in Zaragoza, where he was ordained as deacon on Saturday, 20 December 1924. He was ordained a priest, also in Zaragoza, on Saturday, 28 March 1925. After a brief appoint-ment to a rural parish in Perdiguera, he went to Madrid, the Spanish capital, in 1927 to study law at the Central University. In Madrid, Escrivá was em-ployed as a private tutor and as a chaplain to the Foundation of Santa Isabel, which comprised the royal Convent of Santa Isabel and a school managed by the Little Sisters of the Assumption.
Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer y Albás founded Opus Dei, an organization of laypeople and priests dedi-cated to the teaching that everyone is called to ho-liness by God and that ordinary life can result in sanctity.
Escrivá gained a doctorate in civil law at the Com-plutense University of Madrid and a doctorate in theology at the Lateran University in Rome. His principal work was the initiation, government and expansion of Opus Dei. Escrivá’s best-known publi-cation is The Way, which has been translated into 43 languages and has sold several million copies. Escrivá died on 26 June 1975.

SAINTS JOHN & PAUL - June 26
Saints John and Paul were brothers and army offic-ers whom the emperor Constantine held in high es-teem and so were assigned to the household of his daughter Constantia. In some versions of the story they were heirs to Constantia and court dignitaries. But when Julian the Apostate became emperor (called such in Christian history because of his re-turn to ancient Roman pagan worship), they re-fused to go to the court to take the oath to serve the Roman gods and offer sacrifice, even though many others were doing so. One historian of the time said that Julian persuaded many Christians, including even some priests, to make such sacrific-es, using his flattery or bribing them. John and Paul proved immune to both flattery and gifts and then to threats. Julian gave them ten days to reconsider, after which he had them placed under house arrest and killed by a captain of the guard, Terentianus, and buried on the spot. During those ten days the brothers met with their friends and celebrated Mass with a priest of the Roman community. They made plans to have all they possessed distributed to the poor and thus were ready to face their fate fully. Their execution was kept from the public as much as possible, including where they were buried, be-cause Julian did not want to stir up a cult of mar-tyrs. One year after their death, however, Julian died in battle and was succeeded by Jovianus who embraced the Catholic faith. He allowed a basilica to be built over the place where their presumed graves were and that place of martyrdom soon be-came a pilgrimage site. The date of their martyr-dom is not actually known but 362 A.D. is the usual year given. Their feast day is June 26th.

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.
We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite
you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
SUBWAY ROSARY
Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. The group will then proceed to 42nd and Broadway Time Square subway station. We
