GOOD MAGIC RETURNS INFOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

By Christie DeBernardis

Champion Good Magic (Curlin) makes his highly anticipated

3-year-old debut Saturday in Gulfstream=s GII Fountain of Youth

S. Runner-up behind a ATDN Rising Star@ performance from

Hazit (War Front) in his Aug. 26 unveiling at Saratoga, the

$1 million KEESEP buy completed the exacta in the GI Champagne

S. at Belmont Oct. 7. The chestnut put it all together when it

mattered most, capturing the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile by

4 1/4 lengths at Del Mar Nov. 4 and snagging the Eclipse for top

juvenile colt.

AThe year is filled with promise,@ trainer Chad Brown told the

Gulfstream notes team. AThe horse, knock on wood, is very

healthy. His battery is recharged. He=s a fresh horse. We=re

excited to get his 3-year-old year kicked off and hopefully one

filled with success and no interruptions.@

Last term=s GI Breeders= Futurity S. hero Free Drop Billy (Union

Rags) could only manage ninth behind Good Magic in the

Juvenile, but had never finished worse than second in his four

starts prior to that. The chestnut flashed that previous form in

his sophomore bow Feb. 3 in the GII Holy Bull S., checking in

second behind an eye-catching performance from Audible (Into

Mischief).

JOHN BRUNETTI, SR., HIALEAH OWNER,

PASSES by T. D. Thornton

John J. Brunetti Sr., the colorful and sometime controversial

owner of Hialeah Park and three Florida-based Thoroughbred

racing and breeding farms, died peacefully at his Boca Raton

home on March 2. Brunetti, 87, had been in tenuous health

since undergoing the removal of a cancerous lung last year.

The Bronx-born son of an Italian immigrant who instilled a

tenacious work ethic in his children as they grew up in New

Jersey, the younger Brunetti=s first exposure to horse racing was

a visit to South Florida tracks, including Hialeah, with college

buddies in the early 1950s. Brunetti first got involved in the

sport by splitting shares in a racehorse with his father a few

years later, and in 1977, the younger Brunetti secured a

longshot deal to buy Hialeah, outbidding a number of

better-connected Thoroughbred insiders to do so.

AThe biggest thing about his [Holy Bull] performance is that it

shows the race in California was just a fluke and he came back to

his old form,@ Romans said. AYou don=t know for sure until you

run a horse. I was very pleased with his race. It was a really

fast-run race according to all the numbers you look at. His

numbers actually moved forward to an all-time top.@

ATDN Rising Star@ Strike Power (Speightstown) has shown a

wicked turn of foot going around one turn and will attempt to

stretch his speed in

this spot. Romping

by eight lengths in

his career bow here

Dec. 23, the

homebred went

wire-to-wire in the

after making his first three starts at Aqueduct. Donning cap and

Ozone Park Dec. 15, the $2 million KEESEP purchase broke slow

and was a bit green when third in the GIII Withers S. there

Feb. 3.

AA mile and a sixteenth might be a little short for him but the

race looks like it should have some pace,@ said Todd Pletcher.

Fly So High | Lauren King

RISING STAR HOPES TO >FLY SO HIGH= IN

DAVONA DALE By Christie DeBernardis

>TDN Rising Star= Fly So High (Malibu Moon) will attempt to

provide her Hall of Fame conditioner Shug McGaughey with his

2000th win while making her stakes debut in the GII Davona

Dale S. at Gulfstream Saturday. Romping by 7 3/4 lengths at

second asking going a mile at Aqueduct Nov. 16, the $675,000

KEESEP buy proved that effort was no fluke with a 5 1/2-length

optional claimer score over this track and trip Jan. 4 (video).

AShe shipped down here and I thought she ran fine against

winners and she=s trained well here,@ McGaughey told the

Gulfstream notes team. AShe=s a great big filly and I=ll be anxious

to get her around two turns. This race will be another

stepping-stone and we=ll be able to run against 3-year-old

fillies.@

While the Phipps Stable representative is trying stakes

company for the first time, Take Charge Paula (Take Charge

Indy) is already a proven commodity in black-type company. A

three-time stakes winner and Grade III-placed as a juvenile, the

dark bay was privately purchased and transferred from Kelly

Breen to Kiaran McLaughlin for her sophomore campaign. She

proved a worthy investment for her new connections with a

decisive victory in this venue=s GIII Forward Gal S. Feb. 3. Also

exiting the Forward Gal are Sultry (Malibu Moon) (second),

Heavenhasmynikki (Majestic Warrior) (fourth) and Miss Mo

Mentum (Uncle Mo) (sixth).

AShe had one bad run around two turns [when 10th in the

GII Pocahontas S.], but she had a troubled trip that day so we=re

going to throw that out,@ McLaughlin said. AShe=s a very nice filly

and this race will be a good stepping-stone for whatever we do.

AThe one-turn mile should be a good test for us to see whether

we go two turns next time or go back to seven furlongs.@

Sunny Skies (Animal Kingdom) could prove to be any kind in

this seasonal bow. Following a nine-length graduation on debut

at Keeneland with a

gate-to-wire victory

in Churchill=s

Debutante S. over

the summer, the

Normandy Farm

homebred switched

up her running style

in the Aug. 20 Ellis

Park Debutante S.,

making a wide, late

bid to be third. Third

again coming from

off the pace in the GII Pocahontas S. Sept. 16, the chestnut

checked in sixth when trying turf for the first time in

Keeneland=s GIII Jessamine S. Oct. 11. Sunny Skies enters off a

half-mile bullet at Payson Park in :48 4/5 Feb. 22 and may

benefit from the cut back to one-turn.

Another runner worth a look is the Mark Hennig-trained Cache

(Distorted Humor), who enters this test off a 2 3/4-length

graduation in her seven-panel unveiling over this strip Jan. 27.

The $500,000 KEESEP buy was a bit green that day, but ran to

the money and looked like one who would improve with both

distance and experience.

AI would have liked to possibly run in an allowance race, but

there isn=t one to run her in at this point,@ Hennig said. AI think

she=s a stakes-caliber filly, there=s no doubt, but we=re giving

away a handful of experience. It=s a lot to ask of any horse to go

from a maiden victory in their first start to run against

graded-stakes winners in her next start.@

>FRANCO= SEEKS SECOND STRAIGHT WIN AT

>TDN Rising Star= Speed Franco (Declaration of War), winner

fo the GIII Dania Beach S. last time, looks to score his second

straight graded victory at Gulfstream in Saturday=s GIII Palm

debut here in September, but was disqualified and placed

take the Dania Beach Feb. 3.

Oak Bluff Stables= undefeated Therapist (Freud) makes his

Fellow >TDN Rising

Star= Hawkish (Artie

Schiller) steps up into stakes company off an ultra-impressive

late-running graduation going a mile over this course in his Jan.

6 career bow. Another runner of interest is Pulpit and

GIII Pilgrim S. third-place finisher Maraud (Blame), who enters

off a course-and-distance optional claimer victory for trainer

Todd Pletcher Jan. 13.

AHe=s doing well,@ Pletcher said. AHe=s coming off a nice

allowance win here so we=ve kind of zeroed in on this spot for

quite a while. He=s training well. He had a good breeze

THEWAYIAM LOOMS LARGE IN

HERECOMESTHEBRIDE By Christie DeBernardis

Thewayiam (Fr) (Thewayyouare) is two-for-two over the

Gulfstream Park turf course and she looks to extend that record

in Saturday=s GIII Herecomesthebride S. Capturing one of three

starts in her native France, the bay was privately purchased and

transferred to Graham Motion, winning her Stateside debut for

this barn at Keeneland in October. A head-scratching 11th in Del

Mar=s GIII Jimmy Durante S. in November, she returned to

winning ways in the local Ginger Brew S. Jan. 6 and came flying

late to take the GIII Sweetest Chant S. last time Feb. 3.

AShe=s like the Energizer Bunny,@ Motion said. AShe=s doing

well and she obviously likes that track so it looks like a logical

spot.@ Cont. p7

Todd Pletcher shows confidence in Amertume (Tapit) stepping

her right up to stakes company off a course-and-distance victory

in her Jan. 27 unveiling. The Wertheimer and Frere homebred

was a bit green, but circled the field for a half-length score

under John Velazquez in that first outing, an effort that was

further flattered when the second and fourth-place finishers

won their next starts.

Princess Warrior

(Midshipman)

proved to be a

strong competitor on

dirt as a juvenile and

tries grass for the

first time in this

sophomore bow.

Graduating at first

asking at Churchill

Downs in

September, the Ken

McPeek trainee

checked in second in

the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland a month later and

showed late interest to be eighth in the GI Breeders= Cup

Juvenile Fillies Nov. 4. The bay was second to next-out Trapeze

S. winner Cosmic Burst (Violence) when last seen in a Churchill

optional claimer Nov. 25. Princess Warrior=s pedigree, which is

laden with South American graded winners, suggests she may

like the sod and her conditioner had success with this type of

surface switch last year with Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy),

who ran second in the GI Kentucky Oaks and closed out last

term with a victory on grass in the GI American Oaks.

BAFFERT FILLY TRIES TO KEEP >DREAM= ALIVE

By Christie DeBernardis

Phoenix Thoroughbred=s Dream Tree (Uncle Mo) will attempt

to take her perfect record to five-for-five in Saturday=s GIII Santa

Ysabel S. at Santa Anita. Besting subsequent GII Santa Ynez S.

heroine Midnight

Bisou (Midnight

both her Oct. 27

18, the $750,000

1/4-length decision

in the

GI Starlet S. Dec. 9. The Bob Baffert pupil won by a similar

margin last time in the one-mile GII Las Virgenes S. in Arcadia

Feb. 4.

A model of consistency, Ruis Racing=s One Fast Broad

(Decarchy) has only finished worse than second once in seven

starts on both dirt and turf and is a perfect three-for-three on

the main track, including a victory in the one-mile Soviet

Problem S. for California-breds at Los Alamitos Dec. 2. The dark

bay made her last two starts in turf stakes, most recently

finishing second in the California Cup Oaks in Arcadia Feb. 19.

Ed DeRosa of TwinSpires.com takes on TDN's Steve Sherack and

Brian DiDonato as they handicap each prep race leading up to

the GI Kentucky Derby. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets

--highest bankroll after the Lexington S. wins.

DeRosa: GIII Southwest S. - Hoping that Mourinho will be my

worst pick of the year because if I have a worse one than that,

then I should probably give up playing the horses. Bankroll:

$770.

GII Fountain of Youth S. - We=ll look to exacta our revenge on

the Fountain of Youth S. where Good Magic is a much more

formidable favorite than Mourinho was, but looks opposable at

the price given the layoff and that he lost his career debut at

4-5. Storm Runner is the play here off a flashy allowance win

over the respectable Mississippi. There=s some concern of

too-much-too-soon, but the 15-1 price compensates that

concern. Of the Asexy@ alternatives to Good Magic, I=m most

against Strike Power, who took a big step back figures wise off

his maiden win and had distance questions before even

stretching out. Selection: #5 Storm Runner (15-1).

Sherack: GIII Southwest S. - Was counting my money once

Combatant started winding up with that sweeping move. Then

the golden rail opened for My Boy Jack and it was quickly over.

Still a nice effort, however, and at least grabbed some place

money. Time to make my move. Bankroll: $1050.

GII Fountain of Youth S. - I=ve been on Free Drop Billy since day

one and I=m not turning my back on him now. He couldn=t match

strides with the ultra-impressive Audible in the Holy Bull (not

sure who really could=ve that day), but I=m perfectly fine with

that. There=s every chance that he needed some seasoning while

making his first attempt from his very disappointing run in the

Breeders= Cup Juvenile and he was also much closer to the early

pace than he probably wants to be, too. There=s much more

speed signed on here and that should allow him his ideal trip of

sitting back and making one big run. Selection: #2 Free Drop

Billy (9-2).

DiDonato: GIII Southwest S. - I totally took the wrong closer.

Oops. Bankroll: $2240.

GII Fountain of Youth S. - I attempted to make a case for pretty

much every other horse in this race before deciding that Good

Magic was just too good for them. Nobody figures to run a race

fast enough to beat him if he shows up, and given that he=s been

easily handling last week=s GIII Hal=s Hope winner Economic

Model in the mornings, he seems plenty to ready to kick off his

sophomore season. He=s got the tactical speed to work out a

perfect trip, and I=m hoping others fall into the trap I fall into the

other 99% of the time and try to beat a horse like him just to

beat him. Selection: #6 Good Magic (7/5).

John J. Brunetti, Sr. cont. from p1

Over the next four decades, Brunetti oversaw the waxing and

waning of the fortunes of Florida=s once-grand showcase race

place. But even as the racing circuit in the state shifted abruptly

amid years of dates conflicts and the infiltration of non-racing

gaming, Brunetti still held out hope nearing the end of his life

that Hialeah could be restored to its prominence as one of the

nation=s most beautiful and most opulent places on the planet

to watch Thoroughbred races.

Brunetti=s passing was confirmed by Richard Sacco, his

operations and racing manager.

AHe=s been active right up until the very end, both here at

Hialeah and with traveling to watch his horses run,@ Sacco said

on Friday. ALast summer, he was at Monmouth Park to accept

the leading owner trophy for Red Oak Stable. We went to the

Breeders= Cup in California. He was at Gulfstream Park in

December to see Bal Harbour (First Samurai), who is trained by

Todd Pletcher, win a stakes race. And two weeks ago on Friday,

he was present for a street-naming designation in his honor

where the city of Hialeah renamed East Fourth Avenue, which is

the clubhouse entrance street that fronts our 200-acre property,

to John J. Brunetti Sr. Avenue.@

Cont. p10

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 14 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • MARCH 3, 2018

John J. Brunetti, Sr. | Horsephotos

Brunetti, Sr. Dies cont.

Sacco said that Brunetti=s three principle Ocala properties--his

private 252-acre Red Oak Farm, the public/private Good Chance

Farm training center, and Ocala Stud--which Brunetti has leased

out since 2012--will continue to operate under the direction of

Brunetti=s sons, John Jr. and Stephen (the president and

secretary-treasurer, respectively) of Hialeah Park and Casino.)

Sacco added that Brunetti had been downsizing the operation

over the past few years after peaking at around 200 horses in an

attempt to focus on quality over quantity.

AThis is probably Mr. Brunetti=s best crop of homebred

2-year-olds that we=ve ever had,@ Sacco said. ANow his two sons

will carry on with his plans. The key to this family is, a lot of

times when a patriarch leaves, the kids kind of sell out the

horses and go off to do other things. But his kids love horse

racing like their father did, and they are 110% committed to

keep racing with their homebreds, continuing with the farms in

Ocala, and being a major part of it.@

At the age of 13, Brunetti attended New York Military

Academy. He later served in the U.S. Army and graduated from

the University of Miami with a Business Administration Degree

in 1952. He and his father split shares in a racer named Vertex in

1957 and Brunetti expanded his stable over the next several

decades.

According to a recent biographical profile in the Miami Herald,

in 1974, Brunetti learned the owners of Gulfstream Park were

attempting to buy Hialeah Park. Brunetti called then-owner Bert

Galbreath, and said, AI=m just a little person, but may I come talk

to you?@ It took until 1977 to close the deal, and Brunetti said

Galbreath, who he felt was rooting for him, accepted Brunetti=s

mother=s $400,000 certificate of deposit as a down payment.

Hialeah=s hallmarks into the 1980s centered on beautiful

architecture, a safe racing surface, the tradition of flamingos in

the infield and its stronghold on the prime winter racing dates.

But squabbling over those dates within the racing circuit forced

the track to close twice, and Brunetti later had to fight all the

way to the Florida Supreme Court to secure casino rights,

creating no shortage of enemies and critics. The track hasn=t

hosted Thoroughbreds since 2001, and even the Quarter Horse

meets have recently devolved to the point where the match

races between aged ponies are clearly just a formality to satisfy

licensure for the property=s casino gaming.

Yet Sacco said people might not be aware that Brunetti

remained committed to maintaining Hialeah=s infrastructure

over the past several years in hopes of better things to come.

AHe got to envision everything he wanted in the structure of

Hialeah Park,@ Sacco said. AJohn Brunetti Sr. was talking right up

until a couple of months ago about bringing back Thoroughbred

racing to Hialeah.@

Brunetti told the New York Times in 2014, AWhy can=t we be

holding a Breeders= Cup here? There=s no reason why not? How

do you get the Breeders= Cup? How do you get anything in life?

You hope, you work, you pray.@

AI=m rounding third base and headed for home,@ Brunetti told

the Herald in December. AI=m starting to expand the foundation,

and a program for giving back. I=m growing my giving the way I

grew my business. You have to ask yourself, `Where do you get

your satisfaction?=@

Brunetti had been hampered by health issues in the final

decades of his life. He had a triple bypass in 1996 and a kidney

transplant in 2013.

Brunetti is survived by his wife, Tracee, his two

aforementioned sons and numerous members of his extended

family. A memorial service will be held in the clubhouse on the

third floor of Hialeah Park on Monday, March 12, at 12:30 p.m.

Sacco said retired track announcer Tom Durkin, who called at

Hialeah prior to gaining wider fame as the announcer for the

New York Racing Association and the Breeders= Cup has been

asked to be one of the lead eulogizers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be

made to University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Office of

Medical Advancements, 150 NW 12th Avenue, Suite 1020E,

CTA RESCUE RETURNS HOME TO WHERE IT

ALL BEGAN by Bobby Klatt

After Hurricane Maria tore through most of the Caribbean and

Puerto Rico, many horses were displaced and in need of a new

home. The Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare (CTA) stepped up

to lead the charge in giving these equine athletes a chance at a

second life. Their primary goal is to contact breeders of off-the-

track Thoroughbreds and retired racehorses in Puerto Rico to

secure funding to give them a home.

Carson Pass (Eskendereya), a 6-year-old gelding, was one of

those that was in need. The CTA got in contact with Eaton Sales=

Reiley McDonald, who owns Athens Wood Farm and bred the

chestnut, to see if he would be interested in getting him back.

AI was contacted by two formidable ladies, Shelly Blodgett and

Kelley Stobie, of the CTA about a horse they found that was

going to be euthanized,@ said McDonald. AThey checked the

tattoo under his lip and found out that he was bred by us and

called us about saving him and bringing him back to the United

States. I told them I would gladly do it and if they could organize

everything, I=ll take care of the financial part.@

Carson Pass sold as a weanling at the 2012 Keeneland

November sale to Stonestreet Stable for $210,000 through

McDonald=s Eaton Sales. The half-brother to MGSW Eaton=s Gift

(Johannesburg) never made it to the track in the Stonestreet

colors before selling at auction as a 3-year-old for just $10,000.

He made his debut in November 2015 at Mahoning Valley and

graduated in a $5,000 maiden claimer later that month in his

second start by 14 lengths. He also went on to compete at

Thistledown and Mountaineer, tallying five wins in 24 starts in

the claiming ranks. The chestnut eventually made his last start

on July 19 before being sold privately and shipped to Puerto

Rico.

Carson Pass is currently in a seven-day quarantine and will fly

from Puerto Rico to Miami Saturday with the goal of returning

to Lexington by Monday. McDonald also stated that Brook Ledge

chipped in and will ship him from Miami to Kentucky without

charge.

AA horse that was foaled on the farm, had worked through the

ranks to lower-level claimers, shipped down to Puerto Rico,

survived a devastating hurricane, and was found by people with

huge hearts that saved his life, it makes you feel great that he

gets a chance at a second life,@ said McDonald. Cont. p12

Kentucky on Instagram through @carsonpasstoky. You can also

Q AND A: WHY AFTERCARE IS IMPORTANT,

WITH JIM GAGLIANOThis year, an automatic payment of $35 will accompany every

Report of Mares bred paper filed with The Jockey Club, with the

monies collected--estimated at $700,000--going to

Thoroughbred retirement. Twenty-five dollars from each report

will go to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, racing's umbrella

organization which accredits and distributes money to

retirement groups. The TDN's Sue Finley caught up with The

Jockey Club President and COO Jim Gagliano to talk about why

the rehoming of Thoroughbred racehorses is critical to a healthy

sport.

TDN: Let's start with the concept I pose in my introduction:

why is the rehoming of Thoroughbred racehorses critical to a

healthy sport?

JG: Aftercare is a critical issue for the sport because the well-

being of horses is so important to our fans and the general

public. It is also important to note that Thoroughbreds have

proved to be successful in virtually all disciplines of equestrian

competition and as recreational riding horses, therapeutic riding

horses, and police horses. We need to cultivate a culture where

that potential is not only recognized, but also celebrated for the

benefit of the breed and the sport.

TDN: How did you arrive at the $35 figure?

JG: From research with our customers and market analysis.

TDN: For years, retirement was relegated to charity, with a

handful of people in the sport making donations and doing

what they could to help. Is that a fair statement?

JG: Yes. It is a fact that much of the resources raised over the

years for aftercare came through charitable donations. It is

important that that generosity continues, while other new,

reliable sources are being developed.

TDN: That sort of charity was never really enough to solve the

problem, though, was it?

JG: I don't know if I can accurately quantify that. We do know

that organizations such as Thoroughbred Retirement

Foundation, Thoroughbred Charities of America, California

Retirement Management Account, and many other

organizations and people have done fine work for a long time

when it comes to the aftercare of horses. We are also proud of

what Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has accomplished since

its founding in 2012 and in particular its work in not just funding,

but accrediting aftercare locations - essentially holding them to

a high standard of care. We have a good foundation for

aftercare; we just need to work collectively to do more.

TDN: When the TAA was formed, the concept was that there

would be dozens of automatic payments in small increments

at different touchpoints in a horse's career. That hasn't

happened to the extent predicted, and, in fact, The Jockey Club

has led the way in pushing that concept, first with the

registration payment and now with this. Is this the future of

the funding of a meaningful retirement plan?

JG: We think we are heading in the right direction. Everyone

who touches a Thoroughbred's life should be able to contribute

in some way to its aftercare. Some organizations have not fully

embraced the automatic, mandatory payments, but TAA

continues to work with those organizations to coordinate

funding consistent with the original funding program. In

particular, we'd like to see some more participation by certain

segments of the industry as a few of them may still need to be

convinced that well-funded, well-run aftercare is good for the

business.

TDN Q&A cont.

TDN: Is it important to spread the love among other segments

of the industry, other people who make their living from and

profit from racing, and if so, how can you see expanding upon

these touchpoints to, well, touch them as well?

JG: Under John Phillips's leadership, TAA is working on ways to

bring these touchpoints into the automatic contributions to

ensure a continued source of funding and resources for

aftercare organizations. We support these initiatives and think

they are a vital part of solving the aftercare puzzle.

TDN: If someone said to you, "What's the monetary figure that

is needed to accomplish the goal of providing a safe option for

horses immediately exiting the racetrack?" what would your

answer be?

JG: That is a tough one to answer, and it has been for a long

time. It is probably a combination of cash and in-kind services,

which can be difficult to reconcile, but it certainly is a higher

number than we have been able raise to date. The TAA board

has been working to quantify a number, which is a goal for 2018.

FOREVER UNBRIDLED TUNES UP FOR DWC Charles Fipke=s Eclipse Award-winning older mare Forever

Unbridled (Unbridled=s Song) drilled five furlongs over the Fair

Grounds main track in 1:01.40 Friday morning as she continues

her preparations for a start in the G1 Dubai World Cup at

Meydan Racecourse Mar. 31.

AShe was even the whole way, galloped out well,@ trainer

Dallas Stewart told the Fair Grounds press office. AIt was a basic

breeze for her. She needed a good rhythm and she needs to

train. It was a good work, she came back good and didn=t

struggle through any part of it.@

Forever Unbridled departs for Dubai Monday, Mar. 19.

The homebred daughter of 2006 GI Kentucky Oaks winner

Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid) was third to Beholder (Henny

Hughes) and Songbird (Medaglia d=Oro) in the 2016 GI Breeders=

Cup Distaff, but was perfect in three appearances last season,

winning the GII Fleur de Lis H. and defeating Songbird in the GI

Personal Ensign S. before adding the Distaff at Del Mar.

No female has contested the World Cup since Royal Delta

(Empire Maker) in 2012 and 2013. The Japanese mare To The

Victory (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) was runner-up to Captain Steve

(Fly So Free) in the 2001 renewal at Nad al Sheba.

In other World Cup night news, Live Oak Plantation=s Holding

Gold (Lonhro {Aus}) breezed a half-mile in :48.20 over the main

track. Last-out winner of the Colonel Power S., Holding Gold is

an intended runner in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint (1200mT).

CRAIG BERNICK

Too often in our business like minded people constantly

reiterate their talking points instead of having meaningful

dialogue and negotiations with those on the other side.

I read both Craig Bandoroff=s and Eric Hamelback=s Op/Eds in

the TDN and found myself agreeing with most of their letters,

even though they present from opposite sides of the issue.

I=ve read with interest the reasons that people I know and

respect such as Graham Motion, Brad Weisbord, and Terry

Finley have joined WHOA since the beginning of this year, and

they all make very solid points. In my opinion there is no

question the current system is broken and needs an overhaul.

We must have uniform rules across all states with agreed-upon

banned substances, limits and penalties. Our current system has

different rules everywhere; it tests in picograms and makes

obscenely strict rulings against honest horsemen while it=s

almost certain that widespread cheaters use performance-

enhancing drugs where the science outpaces regulation. The

horsemen must be involved in the process of finding a solution

instead of only using their platform to poke holes in the current

proposed bill. And the WHOA group must understand that

without horsemen getting on board, it=s unlikely that any

meaningful change will be enacted. Cont. p14

Godolphin homebreds can always be counted on to have a

pedigree laden with black-type and first time starter

NUMERICAL (Tapit) is no exception. Out of two-time Grade I

winner Seventh Street (Street Cry {Ire}), the Kiaran McLaughlin

pupil is a half-brother to Marking (Bernardini), who was tabbed

a >TDN Rising Star= for his impressive debut victory in 2015.

Marking went on to finish second in that year=s GI Malibu S. and

won a Meydan handicap. Numerical=s second dam is MSW &

GSP Holiday Runner (Meadowlake), who also produced Group 1

winner Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown); and GSP American

Story (Ghostzapper), the dam of GISW American Gal (Concord

Point) and SW & MGSP Americanize (Concord Point). The

morning-line favorite has been working well ahead of this debut,

including a best-of-40 half-mile in :48 flat at Palm Meadows two

back Feb. 9. TJCIS PPs.

IRONWOOD (Curlin) summoned $950,000 at OBS March last

year after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5 and he makes his career

bow in this spot for trainer Abraham Gardea, who saddled his

first two starters just last week. The chestnut is a half-brother to

MSW California-bred Wake Up Nick (Cindago). This is also the

family of GSW & MGISP American Freedom (Pulpit) and MGSW

Gottcha Gold (Coronado=s Quest). TJCIS PPs.

days later to finish in the same slot just behind next-out >TDN

off, the bay saved ground early in midpack as newcomer Slick

Silver (Kantharos) zipped away. Crosswalk moved up to

challenge the pacesetter at the quarter pole and, despite

shifting out in midpack, righted the ship to don cap and gown by

a half-length. The winner is a half-brother to Big League

BHA TAKES TO THE ROADFOR INDUSTRY UPDATE

By Emma Berry

Following an initiative started by incoming Chief Executive Nick

Rust three years ago, the fourth annual British Horseracing

Authority Industry Roadshow toured the country this week,

finishing its run in Newmarket on Thursday.

While led by the BHA, the forum is very much a collaborative

effort between the sport's governing body and its tripartite

partners in the Racecourse Association (RCA) and the

Horsemen's Group. Thursday's panel included Charlie Liverton of

the Racehorse Owners Association, the RCA's Stephen Atkin, and

Great British Racing Chief Executive Rod Street.

"It's only nine weeks to the Guineas," said Rust with a wry

smile as he took to the stage and looked out across the

snow-covered Rowley Mile.

The inclement weather may have brought jump racing to a

halt in Britain this week, and has even affected some Flat

meetings staged on artificial surfaces, but Rust was at pains to

point out that horseracing, as the second-largest spectator sport

in the country, is very much a year-round activity and that the

continued expansion of the fixture list is necessary for the sport

to survive and thrive.

MORE CAVIAR AT PREMIER SALE? Inglis=s Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne is one that

continues to see its profile grow year-on-year. With a solid list of

graduates to its credit thus far this season, and following on

from a strong start to the season at Magic Millions and Inglis=s

Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney, hopes will be high that the 770

yearlings catalogued on Mar. 4 to 7 can take the sale that

produced Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) for A$210,000 to

yet new heights.

Stakes-winning graduates in the first half of the season have

included the A$85,000 Hey Doc (Aus) (Duporth {Aus}), who took

his earnings past A$1.7-million with a win in the G1 Manikato S.;

the A$60,000 mare Fuhryk (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}), a listed

winner and Group 1-placed; Saturday=s G1 Australian Guineas

favourite Cliff=s Edge (Aus) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), who was bought

for A$60,000 and has earned over A$630,000; G1 Sir Rupert

Clarke S. winner Santa Ana Lane (Aus) (Lope de Vega {Ire}); and

I WOULD ARGUE STRONGLY THAT

RACING IS ON THE UP. WE ARE SEEING

SOME OF THE INDICATORS IN OUR

SPORT IMPROVING.Nick Rust

BHA Takes To The Road For Industry Update cont. from p1

In 2018, there will be 1,508 race meetings in Britain--11 more

than last year and up from 1,464 in 2013.

Rust said, "I would argue strongly that racing is on the up. We

are seeing some of the indicators in our sport improving. We

have increasing revenue coming from betting, partly because we

closed the levy loophole through a great team effort, and partly

because betting on horseracing is beating the international

trends and growing, based on the last two years of information

from the Gambling Commission. The growth is small but it is

recognition of how important betting on British racing is to

people and that will help to drive our revenues over the next

few years."

Rust continued, "That has led to record prize-money being

projected for this year. We expect that prize-money in Britain

will be ,160-million this year. Only five years ago it was ,105-

million, so there has been significant growth. It is needed. Our

sport had been going backwards prior to those five years in

prize-money terms relative to growth in costs and so on."

A combination of central funding and additional contributions

from racecourses has helped this rise but it is the growth in

fixtures, and in particular evening meetings, which has been a

thorny topic with trainers, many of whom are under pressure

from a shortage of available staff. With a current workforce that

includes many different countries within the European Union,

that situation could potentially worsen once the full immigration

implications of Britain's exit from the EU are known.

The staffing issue is not the solitary concern for horsemen

surrounding Brexit and Rust outlined the approach being

undertaken by the BHA and a task force headed by

Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Chairman Julian

Richmond-Watson in raising key issues with government, such

as the movement of horses within Europe post-Brexit.

"This is a key topic for our sport over the next year," Rust said.

"Come March 2019 we could be facing a situation where

everything we've come to know when it comes to breeding

racehorses, moving racehorses, campaigning racehorses

internationally, will be challenged. The Tripartite Agreement

between the UK, Ireland and France has been in place for more

than 40 years and allows for free movement of horses between

those countries under high-welfare status. If we do not sort out

the arrangements under Brexit, we could be looking at border

controls and quarantines between the UK and Europe. Hopefully

that's an exaggerated outcome that I sincerely hope won't

happen but our sport is working together now to ensure that we

work closely with the government to get the right outcome."

In acknowledging the urgent need to encourage more people

to work in racing, Rust outlined that at least an extra ,1-million

is to be released for projects geared towards stimulating

recruitment and retention of the workforce. He said, "Finally

there is good traction across our sport about the need to get

behind it with resources rather than relying on government to

assist us as in the past. More people left frontline jobs looking

after our horses last year than joined, even though we had a

record number of joiners. Retention is an industry-wide effort

and we need to assist employers in retaining their staff.@

"The BHA's responsibility is to coordinate efforts and to help

provide the right environment for that. We also need to be

aware of safeguarding issues with young people in racing and to

make sure that we are providing the right environment for them

to develop within the sport."

One of the targets set out by Rust at the inaugural roadshow in

2015 was to increase the number of horses in training in Britain

by 1,000 within five years. Cont. p3

TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 3 OF 8 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • 3 MARCH, 2018

YOUNG GUNS

BHA Takes To The Road For Industry Update cont.

The Thoroughbred racehorse population has indeed increased,

with the number of horses currently registered in training being

approximately 14,500--the first time since 2011 that the country

has had in excess of 14,000 horses. It is in this area, too, where

the words recruitment and retention keep appearing.

Rust said, "We need to reinvigorate ownership, not just by

retaining existing owners but also by bringing new owners into

our sport. We set a target here three years ago of 1,000 extra

horses in training and we have about an extra 700, but they are

pretty much in at the top level of the sport concentrated around

the leading owners. When that target was set it was designed to

say 1,000 extra horses with owners in a sustainable way. Even

though we are quite a long way towards the numerical target, I

don't think we've got there yet and there's quite a lot of work to

do on that."

One way in which ownership could start to be boosted is

through an increase in funding for lower-tier racing to the tune

of ,9.7-million this year. That 'grassroots' support means that

Class 6 races should not be run for less than ,6,000, in some

cases meaning that these contests for a significant proportion of

the horse population have doubled in value.

"We needed to do something about that as we were losing

owners at a rate that is not desirable," Rust admitted.

As well as the potential fallout from Brexit to contend with

next spring, British racing will also have a new Racing Authority,

which will come into effect in April 2019 to replace the Levy

Board. The authority, which will have two representatives from

each of horseracing's tripartite structures--the racecourses, the

horsemen and the BHA--will be chaired by Sir Hugh Robertson,

the former Minister for Sport and the Olympics, who has already

taken up his role in a 'shadow authority' working through a

transitional phase as the Levy Board is wound down.

AMELIE LEMERCIERYoung Guns is a series where we endeavour to find out more

about some of the young professionals in the industry. Today we

speak with Amelie Lemercier, marketing assistant at the Aga

Khan Studs.

TDN: What was your path into the industry?

AL: I have been passionate about racing since a young age. My

father was a trainer of trotters and I spent my whole childhood

on racecourses around France. Cont. p4

Young Guns cont.

AL: I first started to work on weekends during my studies for

the Wertheimer Family at the Haras de Saint Leonard, where I

discovered the Thoroughbred industry. After graduating (HND in

business), I worked at Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand with

yearlings and at Coolmore Stud in Ireland with mares and foals. I

went back to university in 2013 where I did a bachelors in

business, specialising in management and accountancy of

equine businesses. During that final year of study, I was an

intern at Primus Marketing and Advertising. After graduating, I

was hired by the Aga Khan Studs as a Marketing Assistant in

2014.

TDN: Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

AL: First, I would have to say my father for passing his passion

for horses and racing onto me, it all started from there. In the

Thoroughbred industry, I have met a lot of great people who

helped me to reach my different goals; Georges Rimaud and

Aline Giraud from the Aga Khan Studs, Tom Lynch, Harry King,

Mathieu Legars from Coolmore and Richard Henry from Primus,

but if I had to pick only one person, it would be Pierre-Yves

Bureau, the manager of the Wertheimer breeding operation and

my first boss in horses. He introduced me into the Thoroughbred

world, trusted me when I was a teenager with absolutely no

knowledge at all of the industry, taught me a lot about it and he

has always been a great help when I've needed his advice during

my very short career.

TDN: What does your role involve?

AL: The aim of the marketing department at the Aga Khan Studs

is to promote the stallions standing in France and Ireland, the

horses for sale and the company and its activities in general. As

part of this endeavour, my role includes very diverse tasks such

as advertising, press relations, client relations, organisation of

events such as open days or client hospitality, development of

the digital tools (social media and website), marketing

publications and going to the sales and racing.

TDN: What challenges do you face in your role?

AL: There are so many new stallions on the market and the

competition is getting stronger, so one of our challenges, from a

marketing point of view, is to be as innovative and creative as

possible to promote our stallions. I have to say that we are lucky

enough to have, in France and in Ireland, a rich and diverse

roster with very proven stallions such as Siyouni and Sea The

Stars, and an exciting offer of young stallions in Harzand, Zarak,

Dariyan, etc., which makes the job a bit easier. It is the same

challenge for the promotion of our consignments at the

breeding stock sales, but we are fortunate that the mares sold

previously by the Aga Khan Studs keep being prolific and

producing top-class racehorses and they are fantastic promotion

for the Aga Khan drafts.

TDN: What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?

AL: Work hard and keep believing in your dream job; don't give

up until you have reached your goals, even when it's tough and

despite the occasional disappointments. Travel as much as you

can, meet as many people as you can, the industry is very rich in

smart and interesting people, and you will always have

something to learn from them and from your own experiences.

Finally, don't be afraid to make your own opinion about subjects

that matter to you.

TDN: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the

industry and how would you solve it?

AL: Unfortunately the industry is facing a few challenges. In

France, I would have to say that the most important is the

attendance on racecourses. France Galop is working actively on

that matter and is doing a great job but we have to work harder

on this. If the number of visitors on racecourses and the interest

from the general audience increase, I believe it will have a

significant impact on betting, potentially on the ownership and

definitely on the durability of our sport. Promoting the sport

itself and our sportsmen/women as done by the Epiqe

Series/Champion series, from my point of view, is very efficient

but the general public are hard to convince. We need to turn

racing into a major social event like it's done in Ireland, in Great

Britain or in Australia, and educate people about the joy of

racing. That being said, compared to abroad, racing is not an

integral part of our culture in France, but it is a fascinating

challenge. Cont. p5

WE NEED TO TURN RACING INTO A

MAJOR SOCIAL EVENT LIKE IT’S DONE

IN IRELAND, IN GREAT BRITAIN OR IN

AUSTRALIA, AND EDUCATE PEOPLE

ABOUT THE JOY OF RACING.Amelie Lemercier

Young Guns cont.

TDN: How do you think the general public perceives racing?

AL: Racing is such a great sport with true athletes, with an

important economic weight and employment rate but I am

afraid that the general public, at least in France, is not well

aware of this. The public think it is somewhat elitist and

inaccessible. We have to thank the new initiatives such as racing

syndicates and associations of young breeders/students, which

contribute to changing this perception and teaching people that

it is accessible and affordable. Horse welfare is also an

important matter as the general public often think that the

industry professionals make the use of horses to the detriment

of their well-being. Re-homing and retraining associations such

as ROR (UK) or ADDP (France), to name just a few, make great

efforts to promote the horses' welfare during and after their

racing career, which is crucial for the image of our sport.

TDN: How would you attract more young people into the

workforce?

AL: I think that a lot of institutions make great efforts to attract

young people into the workforce such as The Thoroughbred

Club in the UK or Aux Course Les Jeunes in France, which are

definitely a good point of access for young people who have no

links with the industry. Their actions (stud farms or training yard

visits, meetings with professionals, etc) raise awareness among

young people and we should, at every level of the industry,

emphasize those actions. From pupils to students, there is not

enough information yet on the diverse variety of job

opportunities this industry can offer. I am convinced that racing

is about passion in the first place but the youngest generation

have common interest in sports and social events overall, which

should make our sport very appealing, so why wouldn't they be

involved in this industry? The awareness of our sport and its

career possibilities is vital to growing our workforce.

TDN: Who is your favorite racehorse of all time and why?

AL: I would have to say Goldikova, a 14-time Group 1 winner.

She was such a racing machine at the mile. She was the first

Group 1-winning Thoroughbred that I've followed carefully. Her

successes, in Deauville notably, are still amazing memories to

me.

TDN: Tell us something about yourself that not many people

would know.

AL: I have co-founded a racing syndicate named High Heels

Racing which involves women in racing and supports young

trainers around France. I am also the youngest member of the

Steering Committee and a frequent volunteer for the French

retraining charity, Au-Dela Des Pistes, since its creation in 2015.

My role for the charity is principally to assist the team with

communication and events.

TDN: What would you like to achieve in the next five years?

AL: I am constantly looking to develop my marketing and

communication skills in my current job and I am really enjoying

it. In a few years, I assume that becoming a marketing manager

for a renowned commercial farm is a logical target given this

field is my area of expertise. On the other hand, I am a huge fan

of racing and ownership so this domain could also be an option

to study. Finally, setting up a business in communication could

be a very interesting challenge but this is a far-off idea.
