Redmond MotorSport Remember that the open house at

Redmond MotorSport, Saturday, March 1 ", is coming up fast. This get together for our club is going to start at 10:00 am and there will be food, drink, and some real nice door prizes.

Redmond MotorSport has been very active in supporting our club this year with a large ad appearing every month on the back page of the Zundfolge and they had a quality donation for our auction last month .

Redmond MotorSport is located at 15205 NE 90th in Redmond. The phone number is 206 881-2824; fax is 206 869 4495; e-mail is REDSPORT@ NWLINK.COM.

Jim and Scott have been planning on this for the last couple months and it should be a good time for us winterentrenched BMW fans.

When you are there for the open house, they will have their software package running and you can try some wheel/tire packages on your car and see how good they look ahead of time. I have used this package before and it is really sharp to try on the different combinations including doing plus 1 or 2 combos. Now if the software could demo the road holding of some of those big sticky tires .

They do carry a full line of wheels, accessories, performance and appearance toys for BMWs and for other appliances that lesser mortals drive .

They will be running some hot clips of racing events and their certified master service technician will be on hand to answer questions about problems you might be having with your BMW It will

Vintage Racing Motors The meeting date for Vintage Racing

Motors has been set for March 29'\ Saturday. We will begin at 10:00 and finish around noon. Long time club member Byron Sanborn will be our host.

Vintage Racing Motors (VRM) is the premier shop in the area catering to vintage race cars. They offer storage, service, restoration and trackside assistance. The shop is always filled with interesting machinery in various states.

Currently they are rebuilding a Porsche 917. At the time of our visit, it is anticipated that there will be a couple of dozen cars around, including a Mirage, a 2002 with an M3 engine, an Elva BMW, a couple of old Formula 1 cars and a 6.5" liter Bentley.

Byron always indulges us by starting up some of the old cars. The last time we visited VRM, he fired up a V-16 BRM (like a turbine) and a Can-Am Chevy (like the apocalypse). Expect something similar this trip. Be there for the fun.

certainly be worth the visit to find out more about their operation and see about them as an alternate for your 30, 60, 90K services and other repairs

One thing I have found working with Scott and Jim this last couple months is just how willing they are to spend time with us non-mechanical types to find out what they can do for us regardless of our interests. Are you interested in getting in and out of turn 3B quicker at SIR or just want to have your quality car look a bit better on the way to the market? In either case, these guys can help.

Seattle Thunderbirds Hockey Night

I am at it again sports fans! In my never ending quest to entertain the sports conscience of the BMW ACA, I have procured thirty tickets to a Seattle Thunderbird's hockey game. The game is o February 22, 1997 at 7:05 pm against Pnnce George. The Thunderbirds are currently battling for first place in the Western Hockey League; while Prince George is battling to stay out of last place. Now I am not going to promise a win if you purchase a ticket but the odds are definitely in the Thunderbird's favor.

The cost is only $10, a ticket for good seats in the Key Arena. Remember at the Tacoma Rainiers game the club attended, Roger Wales caught a foul ball and won free tickets anywhere United Airlines Shuttle flies . There could be more perks involved - especially if you sit near Roger.

Please send a check for the full amount of the tickets you want to purchase to: Hugh Golden, 23610 5lst Ave. South, Kent, WA 98032. Include the names and telephone numbers of the people you are buying tickets for. On the day of the game, I will be in front of the Sonics Team Shop at the Key Arena on First Avenue across from Chicago's Restaurant distributing tickets. I will be there from 6: 15 pm until 6:45 pm. After that, the tickets will be at will call. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 859-5947.

Stalls Breaking Out

It's BMW Product Knowledge Quiz Time, fellow tire-kickers.

Question one: What new model puts out more than one hp per 1 Occ and 5 lbs of vehicle weight, and has a terminal velocity in excess of 150 mph?

Question two: What new model is the first since the Isetta to have one cylinder and chain drive?

Question three: What forthcoming model features lots of chrome and fringe?

Yes, it's niche marketing time in the Berliner and Italian divisions of our favorite flywheel forger. Each of the above features open-air motoring and fuel economy of better than 40 mpg, despite the catalytic converter. Oh yes, each has only two wheels .

While BMW's car line has been going through developmental changes in the last year or two, the motorcycle division has been bringing out a new variant every six months. Who are these bikes aimed at?

The motorcycle market has shrunk to a small fraction of its 1970s self (perhaps 20% of what it was). And this market is highly segmented. Briefly, these are players:

There are the "cruisers," the Harley and Harley-imitation crowd with a penchant for chrome, tassels, raked front ends and small gas tanks with instruments on them. These look like V-twins, even when they have four cylinders. A subset of this crowd is the "poseurs," who dress in thousand-dollar leathers and ride $20,000 Barleys a few sunny days a year and don 't know the difference between countersteering and a countershaft.

Then there are the "squids," who dart about on racy-looking Japanese cycles with incredibly uncomfortable bent-over riding positions. You've probably noticed them cutting across three lanes of traffic without signalling to tailgate a car in the right lane. Squids are usually in their twenties, and many do not reach thirty.

The serious touring crowd ("iron butts") have shrunk to the point that only

4 ZUNDFOLGE February 1997

a half-dozen models from all manufacturers are targeted at them (us, actually) . Tourers pack a lot of luggage and go on multi-thousand mile trips (on back roads if possible). The "Sport-Touring" variant is the same, with swoopier bodywork so they will look sportier while the rider is closer to nature (read: wetter and colder).

Finally, there is the Gold Wing ("Lead Wing" to the rest of us) set who want sixcylinder, 900 lb. motorcycles that pull trailers and have a reverse gear. Near as I can make out, the difference between these bikes and a car is that you have to wear a helmet on the Wing.

BMW had an epiphany last year. It owns much of the touring and sport touring market, but had nothing to offer the squids or the cruisers, which is over half the large-bike market. Apparently abandoning common sense in pursuit of greed and fashion, it has decided to address this situation.

For the squid crowd comes the Kl200RS, a 1.2 litre, 4-cylinder, in-line, water-cooled bike with primary-colored bodywork you either love or hate. In a break from all new models in the last dozen years, this has a frame (a rather nice one, cast up like the subframes on the new 5-series cars) . Word is the frame was needed to keep the motor's significant vibration from the rider. Also new is grafting the brilliant R 1100 telelever fork onto the K-bike. Supposedly a new gearbox fixes shifting and reliability problems which have plagued BMW bikes for years - we'll see. Most interesting, we Gringos get the 130 hp version while the Yurrupeons are limited to 100 hp. Heh heh heh. With catalyst and ABS (not government required, but BMW won't leave them oft) look for a price tag nudging $20K.

For the cruiser crowd comes the RI 100 cruiser. (The Rl 100, for those who missed it, is an air-and-oil-cooled boxer with no frame, a splendid suspension, a crappy gearbox and bodywork which is best described as controversial.) Those of us hoping for a replacement for

The new K1200RS has 130 horsepower and an aluminum frame.

our beloved air-cooled boxer twins are going to have to reach for the antiemetics, I'm afraid. Originally the cruiser was predicted for mid-1998, but word now is it will pollute the boulevards this summer. It takes the basic Rl 100 chassis, adds raked front forks, pulled-back handlebars, lots of chrome, fringed leather saddlebags (with a picture of Dennis Hopper on the lids, one trusts), a down-sized gas tank and lots of chrome. The one part they almost got right is the exhaust system, with a low pipe on each side (hopefully eliminating the unneeded catalyst and allowing enough noise so you can actually hear the machine) . Not only do the pipes look nice, they would permit full-s ized saddlebags which the Kand R- series tailpipes currently impair. But if BMW markets the machine I've seen pictured, it will be as accepted as a freak-show escapee at a formal ball.

BMW has, in the past, slapped the roundel on other's products and sold them as its own; for example, when it bought the Dingolfing plant it did so with the Glas GT. But this is very rare (accessories excepted). Now, BMW has taken a cycle built by Aprilia with a singlecylinder Austrian-built 650cc Rotax engine, good-shifting five-speed, chain drive, and spoked wheels, and rebadged it. The result is the F650 ("Funduro"), aimed at the entry-level, off-road and thumper sets. It is styled. Actually, there is much to like about its style, but much to dislike as well. By all accounts this is a nice-riding scooter, within its limits . I would go so far as to say that it is a brilliant $5000 motorcycle. Unfortunately, at $7500 (and cramped saddlebags will bring it to over $8000) it is priced

Page 7: Four Doors, No Waiting · 2017. 12. 15. · Four Doors, No Waiting The Fastest Sedan in America Is Available For Immediately Delivery SERVICE 328-2300 SALES 328-8787 TOLL FREE 1-800-782-8780

way beyond entry level and thousands above the (lighter-weight) competition. So despite the Funduro 's success on the Continent and excellent quality, I predict only modest success here. It probably deserves better.

More models are undoubtedly in the pipeline, but BMW hasn't leaked any information. Undoubtedly the improvements in the K1200 will move down to the rest of the K-series. Perhaps the threecylinder K will be revived; it is sorely missed by those who appreciated its light weight and smoothness. And by the time the short-faced skunk is reintroduced to Missouri by well-meaning tree-huggers, we might get a replacement for the RIOO.

Last December 19th, the last aircooled boxer rolled off the Berlin assembly line and was spirited off to the museum in Munich. Thus ends over three-quarters of a century of virtually unceasing development of an engine that powered over a million cars and bikes. This was not a happy day; look for a panegyric in this space in the future .

Annual Banquet On the evening of January 25'", the

club held its annual banquet. And this was our first ever banquet on a boat: the Spirit of Puget Sound. Over 100 people attended and everyone showed up on time. They had to . Otherwise they would have been left at the dock.

The Spirit cruised around Puget Sound on this clear and very cold night. Fortunately, we were indoors and the boat was warm and cozy. The clear night provided a great view of the city skyline and we were able to watch the full moon rise.

Meanwhile, the silent auction started off the night. The buffet dinner came next and then the verbal auction. The auction items sold for good prices, augmenting the club treasury. Please see the sidebar with the auction items and the generous donors. Thanks, supporters.

Instead of a speaker, we had a slide show of the Monterey Weekend. Brian Horne handled the music, Karen Horne the slide carousels and Hugh Golden and yours truly provided narration. We received a lot of compliments, so I think people liked the show.

Hugh Golden was this year's banquet chairperson and did a great job. He made the boat arrangements, handled the registrations and solicited the donations. The event was a great success; well done, Hugh.

LA Show Features Seattle Star In 1996, the LA Auto Show featured the de

but of the new 5-series and the Z3 roadster. For 1997, BMW had no new models to show. So, the BMW stand featured the current product line plus historical BMWs. What a grand way to celebrate the marque's heritage.

Included in the historical BMWs was club member Nancy Martin's red 328, a car familiar to many of our members. Nancy reports that the car was picked up on Christmas Eve and got out of town just before the big snowstorm hit. The BMW transporter held one other car - a large and gorgeous Bentley from Kirkland that had been purchased by Jay Leno. As Nancy says, " I guess we really 'went Hollywood."'

Nancy attended the show and says BMW's exhibit was spectacular. Included was a wal l of Z3s, without engines, pointed skyward.

The Factory

Team in the

USA by David Lightfoot

8 ZUNDFOLGE February 1997

BMW introduced the E36 M3 to the American market in 1994. Given the success the M3's predecessor had racing in Europe, BMW of North America decided they wanted to campaign the new M3 in the US. BMW shipped over a couple of M3s that had raced successfully in Europe and hoped to find a buyer. The price was $150,000 per car. There were no takers.

Next, BMW decided on a more realistic approach : provide some financial and technical support. A deal was cut with Prototype Technology Group owned by Tom Milner. Milner had been racing in one capacity or another for 30 years. And Prototype Technology Group leased the facilities of the old Group 44, founded by Bob Tullius. Tullius called it quits in 1992 and not only were the facilities available, but the talented help also was looking for work.

To top it off, Tom Milner is originally from Germany and speaks fluent German. A big help when trying to get trick parts out the back door at BMW Motorsports. So everything was in place for BMW to dominate the IMSA GTS-2 class, right? It's seldom that easy.

In 1995, Prototype Technology Group ran the entire series. For their efforts, they had only one second and two thirds to show. And this was racing against private teams, not other factory efforts. IMSA GTS-2 is dominated by Porsches plus the odd Mazda.

Not so long ago, GT racing cars were built up from production

bodyshells. They were stripped of all interior trim, roll cages were installed, engines were tweaked and safety equipment added. This is how BMW went racing within their "race what we sell" policy. Unfortunately, everybody else was running "silhouette" cars, which look like the production item but are actually purpose-built tube frame cars that share nothing with their production counterparts.

The result was that BMW was at a serious weight disadvantage to its competitors. Plus, using the stock unibodies means that there is no latitude in mounting suspension pickup points. If that wasn't enough, the BMW engines were underpowered too. No wonder they weren't competitive.

Over the winter, Prototype Technology Group rebuilt the motor and created 3.2 liter engines that produce 390 horsepower. Chassis modifications were also made, but the stock unibodies were still used. A number of body parts were remolded in carbon fiber to save weight.

The result in the early part of 1996? Better, but still no wins. It was time for drastic actions.

BMW Motorsport supplied a brand new chassis as a starting point. The team put the M3s on a crash weight loss program. Super thin carbon fiber pieces were molded. The ABS was taken off, as were the air jacks used for pit stops. Lighter brakes and hydraulic lines were fitted. It worked.

In the debut of the light,

light, lightweight M3 at Sears Point, driver Pete Halsmer won. And the older, heavier cars came in second the third. The next two races were also won at Mosport and Dallas.

Going into the season final at Daytona, BMW was tied with Porsche for the manufacturers' title and Pete Halsmer was within five points of the leading Porsche driver, Larry Schumacher.

PTG raced four cars at Daytona in an effort to push the Porsches back in the field. Schumacher only needed a second to win the drivers' title. With ten minutes to go in the race, Halsmer was leading Schumacher by ten seconds, and Schumacher was about to be overtaken by Javier Quiros in one of the PTG cars.

Then, Halsmer's car filled with smoke. He drove back to the pits and Schumacher drove on to claim the drivers' championship. But Quiros had gotten by to win the race and the manufacturers' championship for BMW.

Milner thinks Halsmer should have stayed out and raced until the car blew up or he won the race, whichever came first. Halsmer thought his car was on fire and that he needed to come in. Milner's attitude is that you can't win a championship in the pits. Halsmer will not be back with PTG for the 1997 season.

1997 But the team will be

back for 1997. The cars have been rebuilt once again for the coming season. There will be more horsepower and some new suspension modifications.

Two of the cars will look similar for 1997. The First Union and Valvoline livery will stay, but w ith additional signage from Yokohama. The third car will sport Red Bull and Fina sponsorship paint. Fina? Isn't that a European sponsor? Well, yes. And European factory drivers will join the effort too. See page 14 for photos of the 1997 cars.

Bill Auberlen will be

back for the whole season, as will Javier Quiros. Dieter Quester, BMW's old war horse, will join the team, too. And factory driver Mark Duez will come over from Europe. The fifth driver signed up for the whole season is Tom Hessert.

The first race of the IMSA season is the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. At Daytona, where a lot of drivers are needed, Boris Said, Derek Hill (son of World Champion Phil Hill) Marcos Oestreich, John Fergas, Dan Marvin and Ron Finger will also help with the driving chores.

The Daytona race is before you will receive this

Zundfolge, but after our deadline. So you'll know the results, but we don't know them as this is written. But, in January, the team set a new Daytona course record for their class, 1.5 seconds ahead of the pace set by David Donohue last year. By the way, the M3s' class has been reclassified from GTS-2 to GTS-3 this year.

Erik Wensberg, BMW NA M Brand Manager, has set some pretty lofty goals for the team this year: "We are preparing in earnest for the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, events we have not yet conquered. We would like to win these two races,

defend our manufacturers' championship, and take the drivers' title in the process. Having said that, we're by no means complacent about the coming season. There are a number of new teams and new cars that will pose a real challenge, including the usual sea of Porsches and an Acura NSX. We have our work cut out for us."

PTG Names International Line-up of BMW M3 Drivers for Rolex 24

An international line-up of drivers has been named to pilot a trio of BMW M3s in the 35th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Feb. 1-2, announced Tom Milner, president of Prototype Technology Group.

Eleven drivers from five different countries, including five selected to campaign the entire 1997 Exxon Supreme GT Presented by Virgin Interactive Series, will compete in PTG-prepared M3s in the GTS-3 category of this famed 24-hour race which kicks off the I I-race season sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA).

Bill Auberlen, Dieter Quester, Javier Quiros, Tom Hessert, and Marc Duez have signed on for the full 1997 season to help BMW defend its 1996 GTS-2 (designated as GTS-3 for '97) manufacturer's championship. They'll be joined at Daytona by Derek John Hill, Boris Said III, Markus Oestreich, John Fergus, Dan Marvin, and Ron Finger.

"The strength of our driver roster," said Milner, "combined with our success at the recent IMSA test at Daytona, gives the entire team a great deal of confidence going into the Rolex 24. The M3s are ready, the drivers are some of the best, and the crew is pumped. You can't ask for a better scenario to start the season."

Auberlen, 28, of Redondo Beach, Calif. , returns for his second season with the PTG BMW M3 team.Auberlenjoined PTG in April of'96, scoring three top-3 and six top- I 0 finishes in seven races last year. He also unofficially smashed the GTS-2 track record by 1.5 seconds at the IMSA/Daytona Test Days two weeks ago.

Quester, 57, of Austria, is a five-time Touring Car champion in Europe and returns for his third year with PTG. Costa Rican Quiros , 40, was instrumental in BMW's taking the 1996 manufacturer's title by winning the Daytona season finale in his first year with the team. Hessert, 45, of Cherry Hill, NJ, the 1988 IMSA Camel Lights champion and a two-time Rolex 24 winner, is new to the PTG effort, as is Duez, 39, of Monaco, a two-time winner of the Nurburgring 24 hours in a BMW M3 and a three-time national rally champion in his native Belgium.

Hill, 21, of Santa Monica, Calif., son of Fl champion Phil Hill, was runner-up in the 1996 Barber Dodge Pro Series and winner of the 1995 International Ferrari Challenge Finals in Mugello, Italy. Said, 34, of Carlsbad, Calif., scored four top-3 finishes

for the PTG BMW M3 team in '96, including one victory. Oestreich, 33, ofGennany has claimed two 24-hour victories: Nurburgring in 1986 and Spa in '90, both in BMW s. Fergus, 44, of Columbus, Ohio, is the 1991 IMSA GTU champion and twotime pro Sports 2000 champion. Marvin, 46, of Berkeley, Calif., scored 11 GTP Lights victories in 1992-93, including the '92 Rolex 24, helping the ComptechAcura Spice team claim two consecutive Lights

1 spend time reading the BMW e-mail digests regularly to see what questions and answers are being discussed. Every so often a topic surfaces that already been pretty well discussed. The new person asking (the Newbie syndrome) can very often find a vast wealth of info in something called the FAQ files that are accessed a couple of different ways. The FAQ files are compilations of e-mail postings edited to cover common or Frequently Asked Questions, hence FAQ files.

The BMW sources on the Internet have these files available for downloading for anyone with a computer and modem. Similar experiences happen around common maintenance or repair situations that lend themselves to sharing those experiences with others . The cyber world of e-mail exchanges and web browsing give one instant access to some of the better collective wisdom available. A point of reference is needed here: most of the wisdom is gathered from good DIY (do-it-yourself) mechanics working on their own cars. The procedures explained are their experiences, so just listen well to the answer and see ifthere is independent collaboration from others, which is often the case.

Recently there have been a lot of questions about the headbolt failures in baby six M20s. These are the motors in the 528e, 325e and 325i of the mid-'80s. There where problems with early '80s belt drive sixes having hex-head headbolts breaking with related damaged caused by the headbolt lodging itself into the valve and rocker. With the very tight confines inside this area, breaking cams or rockers or damage to the head can result. There are replacement bolts that eliminate the problem, but the question reappears every so often. Here is a sample of the FAQ files that talk about the situation and a recent e-mail posting that adds a little more information to the discussion.

Henri Baccouche wrote: "Besides, the TORX head also is prone

to failure ...... "

We see Torx style head bolts in BMW M20 engines every day. We have never seen a Torx head bolt failure on any engine, including a few engines that have been seriously overheated. The only problems that we have seen have been with the hex headed bolts, especially the ones that were manufactured by Ribe. We. have installed hundreds of the Torx style bolts manufactured by TRW since late 1990 without any problems. I may not be the ultimate authority on M20 head bolts (I'm not a materials engineer, just a BMW mechanic), but I also have to say that I'm not trying to sell you anything either.

The following is from a post that I made to the digest last September: Over the years we have seen three different vendors for the hex head style bolts (12.9 grade) found in M20 engines: Kamax, Verbus and Ribe. The Ribe bolts are the ones that seem to have the most problems. We have never found a broken Kamax (used primarily on earlier M20s) or Verbus bolt. You can easily check the vendor and type of bolt by removing the oil fill cap and looking inside the valve cover with a flashlight. We replaced these bolts years ago on our customers' cars, routinely during Inspection I or II services, because we had the valve cover off for the valve adjustment anyway. The Torx style head bolt set has a current BMW suggested retail price of $28 .22. The labor time we would charge for this job was 0.75 hour ($36.75) to install the set. I'm a little surprised that anyone still has the old style bolts. The service bulletin has been around since April of 1990.

From the BMW FAQ #15 From: [email protected]

I've had some experience with these. When I put the motor from an '87 325i into my 528e I had a lot of dealings with Peter McHenry (I hope that's the right name .. . ) who is widely regarded as "the" expert on BMW small six engines. He told me that before I even start the engine I should replace the head bolts if they wery the standard type. You can look into the oil filler cap and see the head bolts. If they look like they take an alien wrench you're OK, otherwise REPLACE THEM SOON! Good advice, THEY do break!!! The replacement bolts are Torx head type and designed to stretch. Th e older type had a nasty tendency to snap the heads off, causing major damage. The TORX bolt is a stretch bolt and can only be used ONCE, that is if you take the head off again later on, they SHOULD be replaced again.

Petf.1 ~;aid that I didn't need to replace the he <i.: : ~;asket or remove the head at all. Just rep i::ice the head bolts one at a time, so the others remain torqued. This would be a good time to replace the head gasket if you think it might need it in the near future . (And a good time to adjust valves, too.) Yeah, that's what the Service Info says, but think about it. When the bolt is removed, there is oil that may "dribble" into the bolt hole (threaded part) . If this happens and you start torquing down the bolt, there will be a hydraulic lock and possibly damage the block.

If you do this procedure, remove the old bolt, spray the hole with brake cleaner, blow out with compressed air and check the hole with an inspection lamp to make sure the hole is dry. The local dealer said that they had not heard of this but were 'surprised' that they changed the bolt style (yeah, right). Then about six months ago I saw an iX in the shop getting some serious engine work done. I asked what happened to it and they said that a head bolt had snapped (surprise!) causing water to mix with the oil (bad) and the owner drove it home and then to the shop (REALLY bad) . The head of the bolt broke off and the camshaft punched it through the cylinder head .. .. OUCH! ! As for the dealer not knowing this .... ... tell 'em to read their technical info ..... .

If you have one of these cars it is in your best interest to change these bolts. It is inexpensive ($40) and only takes about an hour to do. You will need a good torque wrench and a Torx bit (I forget what size). You will need MORE than a torque wrench to do these bolts, you will

also need an angle torque gauge, and there is no substitution for angle torque (others may/will disagree, no one bolt has the same elasticity). Anyway, here are the specs: Step 1 30Nm torque Step 2 90* torque angle Step 3 90* torque angle No setting time No warm running time Hope this helps.

With a displacement of 1200cc for the in-line four cylinder, DOHC, four-valve, liquid-cooled engine, the K1200RS produces 130 horsepower at 8750 rpm. Previously, the record for most powerful BMW motorcycle was held by its predecessor, the 1100cc K1lOORS, which had a "mere" 100 horsepower.

Standard features of the Kl200RS include a cast aluminum frame with BMW's innovative Telelever front suspension and Paralever rear suspension, a new six-speed transmission, antilock braking, electronic engine management and fullycontrolled catalytic converter.

As impressive as this technology is, the performance specifications for the K1200RS are even more impressive. With acceleration figures of 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph, the K1200RS offers truly outstanding performance, yet the utmost in smoothness and refinement for the touring rider.

BMW motorcycles include two single cylinder models in the F650 range, five twin cylinder "Boxer" engine models in the R850 and R1100 range and two four cylinder models in the K1100 and K1200 ranges. Prices range from $7,490 for the F650 models to $16,890 for the current top of the line K1100LT. The price for the new K1200RS has not yet been set.

Both were finished in metallic pink and each roundel badge bore the legend "Imelda." The roof linings were trimmed in mink with gold-plated trim. The dashboards were inlaid with mother-ofpearl. The odometers read just 1548 and 892 miles. Why did Imelda have two identical BMWs? Probably one for each foot.
