Are Nuclear Weapons a Real Option? A TOP VATICAN diplomat has reiterated the Catho-lic Church’s backing for a “complete ban” on nuclear weapons, and criticized protracted negotiations to pre-vent their international spread. “Nuclear weapons provide a false sense of security, as do efforts to secure a negative peace through a bal-ance of power,” said Mgr. Janusz Urbanczyk, the Ho-ly See’s representative to the 57-country Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. “Nations have a right and an obligation to protect their own security, which is strongly linked to collective security, the common good and peace. In this perspec-tive, a positive conception of peace is required, built on justice, integral human development and respect for fundamental human rights, and protection of crea-tion.” Speaking in Vienna at a committee session reviewing the 1971 Non-Proliferation Treaty, the 49year-old Polish diplomat said the Vatican had supported the treaty in line with the Gospel message of “mutual trust and peaceful cooperation”, and was working for a world where nuclear weapons were “completely pro-hibited”. He added that peace could only be built on “human values present in all individuals, peoples, cultures, re-

ligions and philosophies”, but said the international community had not tried hard enough to implement the treaty at a time of concern over North Korea. On the flight back from his visit to Cairo at the end of last month, in answer to a question about North Kore-an missile tests and military and diplomatic moves by the United States, Pope Francis said: “The Holy See views the situation on the Korean peninsula with con-cern and supports the efforts by the international com-munity to revive negotiations over denuclearisation.” He said a third country should mediate the dispute, which risked a war in which “a good part of humani-ty” would be destroyed. Francis said the United Na-tions should reassert its leadership because it had be-come “too watered down”. “There are so many facili-tators in the world, there are mediators who offer themselves, such as Norway. It [Norway] is always ready to help but there are many.” Norway’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Thomas Hauff, told The Tablet: “We never comment on any mediatory role we might have, but appreciate His Ho-liness recognizing Norway’s international peacekeep-ing work.” The Vatican has not directly supported peace-movement demands for unilateral disarmament, but in a January World Day of Peace message, the Pope said an “ethics of fraternity and peaceful coexistence” could not find any place for “nuclear deterrence and the threat of mutually assured destruction”. (From The Tablet 14 May “Vatican Demands a complete ban on nuclear weapons” Jonathan Luxmoore)

Thank You for your Continued Support of your Parish! Bible Garden Progress Update

The Committee has placed and planted the first grouping of three Bible Garden Plants, consisting of a dwarf, fruitless olive tree, affectionately called "Little Ollie", a cardboard palm and a dwarf wind-mill palm. We invite you to view the beginnings of our Bible Garden. In the next few weeks, the Com-mittee will be placing and planting a second and third grouping of Bible Garden Plants. Work contin-ues in constructing the 6-sided Scripture Pole, which will display in six languages this message from First Thessalonians: "Grace and Peace to You". We still have two more languages to select and invite you to recommend a language by placing your recommendation in the wooden box on the Bulletin Board shelf.

We still need $5,775.70 to meet our Total Land-scape Goal. You may also place your Bible Garden donations into the wooden box by using the golden envelopes available at the Church Doors. Thanks for your continuing generosity in completing our Bible Garden.

AROUND TOWN

Daily Prayer for Our Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
