Our new Bishop, Daniel Garcia, preaches at his Installation mass at Madonna del Sasso, Salinas

In today’s Gospel, Jesus, having embarked on his time of public ministry, returns to his hometown and declares, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” But rather than be embraced as the Messiah by the people he grew up with, it is as he predicts, and they turn away from him and attempt to drive him off. Sadly, it is an irony of human nature that “no prophet is accepted in his own native place.” To some degree, this remains true to this day, and we may well have experienced this sadness in our own lives in one way or another. In contrast to this though, we have the words from the Book of Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” When we face disappointments in our lives and in our relationships with others we can always turn to the One who truly knows us best, our loving God, who will support, and comfort us, and cheer us on!

LITURGICAL VAULT

LITURGICAL VAULT

“The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves; it is His work; He is the subject;

and we must open ourselves to Him”

(Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).

THE ORDER OF MASS: THE ENTRANCE We will begin our step-by-step exploration of the Order of Mass (Ordo Missae) by starting at the beginning of it: The Introductory Rites (Ritus Initiales), which are “[t]he rites preceding the Liturgy of the Word, namely the Entrance, Greeting, Act of Penitence, Kyrie, Gloria, and collect, have the character of a beginning, introduction, and preparation. Their purpose is to ensure that the faithful who come together as one establish communion and dispose themselves to listen properly to God’s word and to celebrate the Eucharist worthily” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal = GIRM, n. 46).

The Entrance consists of the procession of the celebrant and ministers to the sanctuary. Depending on the occasion, this procession can range from solemn to simple. The most solemn of entrance processions would include a thurifer swinging a smoking thurible full of incense, while the simplest of entrance processions would be only the celebrant exiting the sacristy, for example, at daily Mass.

“After the people have gathered, the Entrance Chant begins as the priest enters with the deacon and ministers. The purpose of this chant is to open the celebration, foster the unity of those who have been gathered, introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical season or festivity, and accompany the procession of the priest and ministers” (GIRM, n. 47).

“In the dioceses of the United States of America there are four options for the Entrance Chant:

the antiphon from The Roman Missal or the Psalm from the Roman Gradual as set to music there or in another musical setting;

the seasonal antiphon and Psalm of the Simple Gradual;

a song from another collection of psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the diocesan Bishop, including psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms;

a suitable liturgical song similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the diocesan Bishop” (GIRM, n. 48).

It is this last option that has largely become the norm in most parishes. When there is no singing at the entrance, “the antiphon in the Missal is recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a lector; otherwise, it is recited by the priest himself…” (GIRM, n. 48). In our parish, this recitation of the Entrance Antiphon is observed at the 7:30am Sunday Mass and at most weekday Masses.

Announcements

Dear Parishioners, One of our most important ministries here at Carmel Mission is our Hospitality Ministry, which hosts our Coffee and Donuts (and Bagels and Cream Cheese!!)

Following the 7:30, 9:15 and 11:00 AM masses each Sunday. It is only when we cannot host this event that we discover just how much people love it. Our goal at Carmel Mission is to make all who visit us feel welcome here. Coffee and Donuts is a fantastic community builder.

I thank Chris Stone for stepping up to the plate and agreeing to be Coordinator of this ministry. Contact her at (831) 297-0318 or (831) 626-4348.

The Hospitality Ministry is in great need of volunteers; one Sunday a month. Especially on the 4th Sunday for the 7:30 AM mass.

– Fr. Paul

Commandante Hermenegildo Sal On the right side of the nave in the front of the sanctuary there is a stone inscription which reads:

Don Hermenegildo Sal (1746-1800) served as Commandant of the Monterey Presidio until his death on December 8, 1800. He was buried at the Mission and the stone plaque commemorates his burial. He was a native of Villa de Valdemora, Spain who probably came to Alta California in 1773. He was a corporal in the Monterey Company and witnessed the Governor's signature to the first land grant in California in 1775.

He was promoted to sergeant and then commissioned an ensign in 1782 and Lieutenant in 1795. Sal was an excellent officer, a strict disciplinarian, the best accountant and the clearest headed business man in California at the time.

During the greater part of his service he acted as the “habilitado”—the accounting officer of the company. His accounts were in good order and were beautifully written.

In November 1792, Captain George Vancouver sailed into the port of San Francisco and Ensign Sal, who was the acting commandant of the San Francisco Presidio, suggested that he move his ship to the presidio anchorage which was more convenient and accessible. The Englishmen were entertained by Sal with the greatest courtesy and hospitality. Vancouver was so pleased and appreciative of the courtesy shown him that he named the point below San Luis Obispo “Point Sal” in honor of his host. Point Sal State Beach is located there today.

In 1795, Sal was made Commandant of the Monterey Presidio. Sal's wife was Josefa Amezquita. His daughter, Rafaela, married Don Luis Antonio Argüello. His daughter Josefa married Sergeant Roca. Two sons entered the military company of San Francisco and both died early. Vancouver wrote in the highest terms of Sal and his wife and their family and their excellent educations.

When Mission San Juan Bautista was founded by Father Lasuén on June 24, 1797, the actual site of the mission was chosen by Sal and Fr. Antonio Dantí, principal of the San Francisco mission. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association If you would like to find out more about becoming a Docent, please contact Nancy Hardy at [email protected] or 831-624-8846.

COMMUNICATION

Website, Calendar and Mission Map & Guide

We have done much to improve communication within our parish and to our many visitors from all over the world. We have enhanced our weekly bulletin, which we distribute via email each week and may be subscribed to at the bottom of every page on our website at carmelmission.org. Our website continues to develop and promote all of the services, events and programs we provide at the Mission. We have just launched a dynamic Mission Calendar, which allows the public to view all the many activities at the Mission. We encourage you to access and bookmark our calendar at carmelmission.org/calendars and stay close to what is going on. Should you want a calendar of upcoming musical events at the Mission it is now available. Should you want to check on special mass schedules you will find it on the online calendar. Similarly, members of our ministries will find their calendar in one spot. The calendar is web based and allows us to update information in real time. It is the place to go to find out about all scheduled activities. Each calendar item includes a wealth of information about each activity and provides communication links to the groups who sponsor the activity. If you would like to sponsor an activity or utilize our facilities, just email [email protected] and discover what options are available. If you would like to reach your audience in our community, we have streamlined our communication through our [email protected] email address. We distribute important information through many channels; in person in the Basilica, via bulletin, email, website and calendar. We have integrated our communication into one central point, which allows us to get your message out to your audience much more effectively. We also have developed a new Mission Map & Guide for our many visitors and events. Please visit the Mission Museum Gift Shop for a copy or visit our website at carmelmission.org where you can download and print a copy.

~ We continue to make great progress at the Carmel Mission as we move “Always Forward” with hope in our hearts and a new vision for the future.

Annual Ministry Appeal

We thank you greatly for the overwhelming support of our only parish fundraiser, the AMA or Annual Ministry Appeal. Under the leadership of Paul Hoffman, we set a new record for contributions! The excess over our diocesan commitment went directly to complete the new office and kitchen in Crespi Parish Hall. If you have not seen it yet, please stop by for coffee and donuts after Sunday morning mass for a few minutes and see what a great gift your contribution was to the Carmel Mission. Not a day goes by without this space being used by our parish. Your contributions directly supported your ministries doing the Lord’s work at the Mission.
