One of the ways the Parish Council has worked at increasing communication was to schedule two meetings during the year to allow all the Commissions to come together. Our second meeting will be next month. I feel this has been an important step for the vision of the parish. This past week the Parish Council gathered to finalize their presentation for the February meeting. I would like to thank the members of the Council for being diligent with the process of proposing new ways to invite members of the community to find ways to connect with who God is calling them to become. Within all of our hearts God is inviting us to be participants in the mission and ministry of His work on earth. One valuable way is becoming part of a ministry. Needs abound, and so do the vastness of invitations. Please continue to support the efforts of the Council and keep them in your prayers. February 18th is Service Sunday, the last one scheduled during our Year of Charity. Charity is the final pillar of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan that we have highlighted by dedicating a full year to build awareness of each pillar. The first pillar was discipleship, the second evangelization. As an active parish, the pastoral plan invites us to stay the course and build bridges between ministries so that the message of Jesus may be lived. This last week the committee for Service Sunday gathered to work on the project selection for our last gathering This has been a highly effective group that is fantastic at listening, responding and coming together to create outreaches that make a difference. It has been a joy working with them throughout this year. Lent is right around the corner. Please mark your calendars for our presentations of prayer presented by Fr. Steven Borello on February 24, 25 and 26, 2018. Fr. John
LIVING THE GOSPEL THROUGH OUR ACTS OF CHARITY
January 28, 2018 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three
Jesus taught them as one having authority. People were astonished at what He said and what He did as they traveled to the synagogue to listen. Jesus gives them new hope and new life. They were clear that this was not the way the Sadducees and Pharisees taught. Where did this come from? Many are fascinated with power and authority, some are lured to it, some seek it out, and still others study its legal ramifications. All in all there is something about authority and how it is communicated which sparks imagination and fuels pages of history books. In the recent weeks there has been a big fascination with the Netflix series entitled “The Crown”. It is the story of Queen Elizabeth in her young years, during her coronation and her reign after. While I have only watched the first season, I am struck by the dialogue and sense of the authority of the queen. As queen she is the head of the Church of England and at her coronation she is anointed to a new role. While her authority might seem great, she is quick to learn of the rules that guide and govern. She is told that she must lose herself, forsake everything else and put the role of authority as queen above all else. Of course the series leads viewers through the struggles of a person coming to grips with her role and identity. What I found interesting is her realization that what is perceived and needed by the country and the kingdom takes priority. This authority comes from the anointing which comes from God. Jesus has a different authority. He is the second member of the Trinity and when He teaches, He teaches with a compassion and love that no one else had ever seen. His authority comes from surrendering to the will of the Father as the Son of God. His authority comes from a vision of love. In one of the great scenes of the Gospel, Jesus, at the Last Supper, fetches a basin of water and begins to wash the feet of the disciples. He tells them when it is all finished that He has just given them an example to follow. The reality of our authority is service. The reality of our authority comes from compassion and our willingness to stoop down and wash the feet of those we encounter, not worrying about ourselves. This self-emptying finds its climax on the cross. The ultimate sacrifice is given to all of us by the death for our sins. This is a new authority not given just to some, but given to all. We are anointed at Baptism and sealed with chrism at Confirmation. This Divine Anointing is for royalty and so we are. By the very Anointing of Chrism at Baptism we are pledged as royalty in God’s eyes and His are the ones that really matter. Authority comes from washing the feet of one another. Visuals I’ve placed in my environment remind me every day that my role as priest is to serve and my role as pastor is to lead with mercy and grace. In my house, in plain view I keep a basin; in my office on my desk, I keep a wood carving of Jesus washing the feet of Peter. May God guide us, lead us, and may we follow His example. Reverend John J. Ouper

THE 2018 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL IS NOW UNDERWAY!
The Diocese of Joliet is mailing information about the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this month to all CMAA donors at Saint Anne Parish. The CMAA supports thirty ministries that benefit every parish in the Diocese, including ours, as well as our friends and neighbors most in need. Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $107,600.00. If we raise more than this goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for use. This is a great benefit for our parish! Please review the information you receive and prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year’s CMAA. If you do not receive a mailing from the Diocese about the CMAA, please contact the parish office, 630-554-3331.

STEWARDSHIP In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He teaches. He heals. And all are amazed. By their baptism, Christian stewards realize they are called to do the same in their lives. They are called to be the light of Christ each day. As we bring closure to the beginning of this new year, now is a good time to ask the Lord to fill our hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly minister in his name; that we may be liberated from our insecurities and fear so that we can share the Gospel authoritatively and work to heal at least one wounded relationship in the coming months ahead.
All of us are recipients of many blessings from God. In return, He expects that we praise Him for His goodness and thank Him for His generous gifts. Thanking, however, is not done in word only, but in deed, also. PRESENTATION OF THE LORD February 2
When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem
to present him in the temple, the prophet Simeon told them that
Jesus would be “A light for revelation to the Gentiles”
Luke 2:32. This is why blessed candles are offered
to churchgoers on this feast. Keep these blessed candles in you prayer area.
You can light them on special days, such as, anniversaries of baptisms,
name days.
SAINT BLAISE AND BLESSING OF THROATS
February 3
This bishop suffered martyrdom early in the fourth century.
Legends say that he was a physician before becoming a bishop.
While in prison he miraculously cured a young boy who was choking from a fish bone in his throat. St. Blaise became one of the most popular saints
during the Middle Ages, being invoked as a helper in times of sickness related to the throat. The tradition of blessing throats of parishioners
with two crossed candles has been popular for centuries. The ritual prayer is:
“Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr,
may the Lord free you from evils of the throat and from any other evil.”
BLESSED CANDLES & BLESSING OF THROATS
In celebrate of the Feast of St. Blasé, a blessing of the throats will take place at all the Masses next weekend: February 3-4. Those wishing an individual blessing may come forward after the general blessing. Candles will be blessed at 8:00 AM Mass Friday, February 2, 2018 and will be available February 3-4, 2018 in the narthex.
ONE OF US IS NOT AS STRONG AS ALL OF US . . . . . especially when we join hands to pray. A Prayer Tree exists at Saint Anne Parish to pray for the needs of our community. If you would like to request special prayers for a serious illness or other special problems, or would like to become a part of this ministry, call Jackie Johnson, 630-554-1591.

Today, we are amazed at His clarity, at His authority. Even the unclean spirit knows Him to be Holy and God. † How do I see Jesus’ holiness active in the world?
† What do I need to hear from Him?
† What will that lead me to do?

We are called to faithfully teach and live the message of Jesus. We listen to God’s word, grow in our understanding of it and respond to it through outreach and service in our own parish as well as the wider community. We exercise our responsibility to develop and see the gifts God has given us for the common good and to insure that our Eucharistic celebrations are truly joyful and meaningful. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Baptisms are generally held the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month (some months this may vary) at 12:30 PM. Expectant parents are to call the Parish Office, six months before the birth of their child for preparation information.
