Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, People of Our Lady, Mother of the Church Parish, Today is the last day of Advent. During that season we have ex-perienced a kind of ‘already and not yet’ Christmas. Did you find the Messiah during Advent? I went to the temple of Macy’s and spent more time than we need for our regular Mass, and I couldn’t find the Messiah over there. I went to the temple of Apple and had a similar experience. I visited a couple more

physical and virtual temples of Christmas deals spending my precious time. I’m not sure whether I spent more time in the presence of my computer or more time for daily prayers. In fact, even the Christmas deals, as amazing as they are, there was no deal found to buy a relationship with God. Now, God offers us the best gift, a gift surpassing our dreams, surpassing our im-agination, the gift of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. The One existing with-out beginning, born in time as a human to grant us the privilege of being children of God. Our thoughts and hearts are close to the place where Jesus was born, Beth-lehem. Mary and Joseph even couldn’t find a deal for staying in a hotel, but they found favor with God, a favor of angels, a favor of shepherds, a favor of peace and joy, a favor of love and hope. As we celebrate this wonderful time of the Nativity of Jesus Christ, I would like to wish each of you, each person, each family the strength, peace, and joy. May the message from the simple manger in Bethlehem gladden your hearts, fill it up with peace, and inspire you to find signs of God’s love in each other. Merry Christmas! Buon Natale! Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia! Frohe Weihnachten! ¡Feliz Navidad Veselé Vianoce! Joyeux Noël! Maligayang Pasko!

Minister of Care Training

There are many within our Faith community who are unable to attend the communal Celebra-tion of the Eucharist. Like that of the Good Samaritan, Ministers of Care visit our homebound Parishioners proving a compassionate presence and listening ear and share the Sacrament of the Eucharist. In addition, they continue to provide the homebound with the connection to the Parish by sharing a Bulletin and discussing upcoming events. If the Holy Spirit is calling you to this Ministry, formal training will be provided. This con-sists of five evening sessions, two hours each, at Presence St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabili-tation Center and will begin Monday, January 22, 2018 from 7-9pm. Contact Terri Kaisling, Faith Community Nurse, for more information at 773-625-3369, Ext. 28.

2018 Calendars

Calendars for 2018, compliments of

Cumberland Chapels, are available in the narthex.

Mass Requests/Memorial Requests Important While we try our best to honor all Mass Intentions, all Mass requests must be completed at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance due to various printing deadlines. Suggested donations per Mass are $10. The 2017 Mass Book is now closed. Please note that the Sanctuary Lamp and Bread & Wine requests fill-up quickly and we have a limited number of dates available. The suggested donation is $50 for the Bread and Wine and $20 for the Sanc-tuary Lamp. Please contact the rectory for availability All Mass or remembrance requests can be made in person at the rectory or by completing the Mass re-quest envelope that can be found in the Narthex. Please contact the Rectory for availability. Please in-sert your payment in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket or the mail slot at the Rectory. While we try to accommodate different situations, especially with our homebound parishioners, we can-not honor mass intentions over the phone. Mass cards are available if you wish to give to the family at the wake or mail to them.

PRAYING SHAWLS On December 18, the Praying Shawls group visited St. Benedict’s Nursing Home to give all the men and women at the facility a Christmas gift - a lap blanket for the men and a shawl for the women, and wished them a Merry Christmas. If you would like to make a monetary donation or a donation of yarn to the group, leave the yarn in the oratory or put an envelope in the collection basket marked Praying Shawls. You may also contact Shirley Schindler at 773-589-0426.

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement

We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Prayers before Christmas Dinner Leader: All the ends of the earth have seen, alleluia! All: The Salvation of our God, alleluia! Leader: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. All: The Lord is God and He has shone upon us. Leader: Lord, have mercy on us. All: Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Leader: Our Father....as it is in heaven. All: Give us this day....Amen. Leader: Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. (Source: Catholicculture.org)

God of all gifts, we thank you for the many ways you have blessed us this day. We are grateful for each of those who are gathered around this table. We ask you to bless us and our food and to bless those we love who are not with us today. In our gratitude and love, we remember your humble birth into our lives and pray for those who are without enough to eat. We remember the stable in which you were born and pray for those who have no place to live. We remember your challeng-ing message of caring and giving and we pray for peace in families and nations throughout the world. We bless you and give you thanks in your Spirit who brings our hearts to life this Christmas Day and forev-er. Amen. (Source: Creighton University Online Ministries)
