Fourth Sunday of Advent

2

WelcomeWe are very glad to have you worshiping our gracious God with us today.

Flowers The sanctuary flowers are given today to the glory of God

from the wedding of Megan Clark and Wyatt Mobley.

The Advent Wreath CelebrationEach Sunday during the Advent season we light a candle in our morning services and read the corresponding Scripture to focus our attention on Jesus and glorify him. We use three purple candles representing Hope, Love and Peace, and a pink candle representing the Joy that is ours because of Christ’s coming into the world and into our hearts and lives. The white candle in the center of the wreath is lit on Christmas Day and represents the birth of Jesus. This tradition, dating back to A.D. 600, reminds us that the center of the Church and the center of our Christmas celebration is Christ Jesus.

To Our Guests,We especially welcome you today! More information about our church is available on our website at firstpresaugusta.org.

Spiritual CareIf you would like to speak to someone about what it means to know Jesus Christ or you have any spiritual need or question, please use one of the prayer cards in the pew rack to contact one of our pastors. Our church elders are also available to speak with you. An Elder and his wife will be standing next to the pastor following the service to talk or pray with you.

Children’s Check-inWe are committed to the highest level of protection possible for the children placed in our care on Sundays and at all church events. For this reason, we require parents of newborns through fifth grade children to check in their children before they go to the nursery, Sunday School, Catechism, Children’s Church or any other children’s activity. Kiosks are available outside St. Andrew’s Hall. The process is quick and easy, and volunteers are available to assist you.

Children’s WorshipWe offer a specially designed program for children in pre-k through fourth grade during the morning services. Leaders will escort children from the sanctuary to their classrooms before the hymn of preparation. Parents are welcome to accompany them to observe where to pick them up after the service. Parents of children in pre-k through second grade are asked to pick up their children following Sunday School or the 11 a.m. worship service.

Nursery Nurseries are provided for infants and toddlers during the worship services and Sunday School. We provide a Mother/Infant Room (room 109) located in the wing behind the sanctuary and to the left, and the Geneva Room is designated as a Cry Room for parents with fussy children, equipped with live video feed of the worship services. Ushers are available to direct you.

Additional Seating Additional seating for morning and evening worship services is available each week in St. Andrew’s Hall.

†The Call to Worship ...............................................................................Luke 2:10-14The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

The Lord be with you.And with your spirit.Let us worship God!

The first Noel, the angel did say,Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far,And to the earth it gave great light,And so it continued both day and night.

And by the light of that same starThree wise men came from country far,To seek for a king was their intent,And to follow the star wherever it went.

Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,That hath made heaven and earth of naught,And with his blood mankind hath bought.

§The Personal Confession of Sin

6

The Corporate Confession of SinHeavenly Father, we humbly confess that we are an anxious, fearful people. We do not trust you as we should and often try to control our circumstances to prevent hardship and pain. We are slow to seek you in prayer, weak in perseverance, and quick to forget the faithfulness of your power and providence. We try to manipulate and scheme instead of resting in your promises and remembering your love.

Forgive us for the folly of self-preservation and self-trust. Forgive us for doubting your goodness. Forgive us for being conformed to this world and for placing our trust in possessions, power, and the wisdom of man.

Renew our minds and hearts that we might walk by faith and not by sight. By your mercy, keep us steadfastly devoted to Christ and cause us to endure to the end, that we might receive your great salvation. Through Christ Jesus we pray, Amen.

†The Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace ...................................................... Matthew 1:21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.

† Indicates the congregation standing. § Please kneel if able to do so.

The Offertory—Mary, Did You Know? .......................arr. Paul Langford (Pentatonix)

**The Offering (Please take a moment to sign the attendance register.)

Mary, did you know that your baby boy Would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy Would save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy Has come to make you new? This child whom you delivered Will soon deliver you! Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know that your baby boy Will give sight to the blind man? Mary, did you know that your baby boy Would calm a storm with his hand? Did you know that your baby boy Has walked where angels trod? And when you kiss your little baby You have kissed the face of God? Mary, did you know?

The blind will see, the deaf will hear; The dead will live again! The lame will leap, the dumb will speak The praises of the Lamb!

Mary, did you know that your baby boy Is Lord of all creation? Mary, did you know that your baby boy Will one day rule the nations? Did you know that your baby boy Was heaven’s perfect Lamb? And the sleeping child you’re holding Is the great I AM!

Quintet: Emily Aceves, Scott Carter, Mike Murphy, Colin Fuller, Jonathan Davis

Offering

Offertory—Of the Father’s Love Begotten ........................... Prudentius, Neale, Baker

Aurelius Prudentius, 5th Century | translated from Latin to English by John M. Neale, 1854, and Henry W. Baker, 1859 Music: Divinum Mysterium, Sanctus trope, 11th Century.

Of the Father’s love begottenEre the worlds began to be,He is Alpha and Omega—He the source, the ending he,Of the things that are, that have been,And that future years shall seeEvermore and evermore.

O that birth forever blessed,When the virgin, full of grace,By the Holy Ghost conceiving,Bare the Savior of our race; And the babe, the world’s Redeemer,First revealed his sacred face,Evermore and evermore.

O ye heights of heav’n adore him;Angel hosts, his praises sing:Pow’rs, dominions, bow before himAnd extol our God and King;Let no tongue on earth be silent,Ev’ry voice in concert ringEvermore and evermore.

This is he whom seers and sagesSang of old with one accord,Whom the writings of the prophetsPromised in their faithful word; Now he shines, the long-expected;Let creation praise its LordEvermore and evermore.
