Fourth Sunday of Advent 22-23 December 2018 Year C Life in the Womb Have you ever seen one of those ultrasound photographs of embryonic life in a mothers womb? For us men, it shows us how lively life in the womb can be. Women know this from the kicking and movement which must be an incredible sensation. This little gospel story tells us that the baby in Elizabeths womb leapedand not merely leaped, but leaped for joy’. Is this just poetic hyperbole? No, modern technology tells us what mothers instinctively know, that beautiful music can have a wonderful effect on that earliest phase of life. Here, the presence of Jesus, being carried by Mary in her pregnancy, had a wonderful effect on the life carried by Elizabeth. Good vibrations – very good vibrations. This is why this story is told by Luke. From the moment of the conception of Jesus, good vibrations reverberated out to all human beings. Even those carried in the womb can sense the presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which is why it is an especially beautiful thing when a pregnant mother receives Our Lord in Holy Communion. The good news is that you and I and every human life ever conceived is visitedby Our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Risen Lord can be at any and every point in human history. He chooses to be at our very origins, at our conception. We receive that visit as Original Blessing. Whatever original sin is, it is not nearly as powerful as this Original Blessing which brings about a beautiful relationship with God overpowering any fracturing of that relationship by original sin’. (Paul in Romans 8:15-21) This gospel is good news for each one of us. Reflect on this for a moment. At your origin you received a Divine Blessing. This leads to a reflection on a further and consoling truth. Of course, no words can fill the emptiness, but I want every mother who has lost a baby too early, I want every father who has shared the anguish, to know with the confident trust that comes from hearing this story penned by St Luke, that . . . . . . the same extraordinary sense of Jesuspresence which was felt by the baby in Elizabeths womb, that same extraordinary sense of Jesuspresence was felt by your baby. That Divine Presence conferred an Original Blessing on that life within the womb, and that same Presence accompanied your baby into the everlasting embrace of Divine Love in Heaven. This was so experienced by John that he kicked for joy in the womb. When John kicked for joy in the womb Elizabeth realised that it was the baby carried in Marys womb who was responsible! But it is to Mary that she exults: Of all women, you are the most blessed and blessed is the fruit of your womb!We repeat this every time we recite the Hail Mary. On the eve of Christmas, let us join Elizabeth in celebrating Marys most wonderful pregnancy, by reciting the Hail Mary. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Life in the Womb Have you ever seen one of those ultrasound photographs of embryonic life in a mother’s womb? For us men, it shows us how lively life in the womb can be. Women know this from the kicking and movement which must be an incredible sensation. This little gospel story tells us that ‘the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped’ and not merely leaped, but leaped ‘for joy’. The good news is that you and I and every human life ever conceived is ‘visited’ by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Risen Lord can be at any and every point in human history. He chooses to be at our very origins, at our conception. We receive that visit as Original Blessing. Whatever original sin is, it is not nearly as powerful as this Original Blessing which brings about a beautiful relationship with God overpowering any fracturing of that relationship by ‘original sin’. (Paul in Romans 8:15-21)

This gospel is good news for each one of us. Reflect on this for a moment. At your origin you received a Divine Blessing. This leads to a reflection on a further and consoling truth. Of course, no words can fill the emptiness, but I want every mother who has lost a baby too early, I want every father who has shared the anguish, to know with the confident trust that comes from hearing this story penned by St Luke, that . . . . . . the same extraordinary sense of Jesus’ presence which was felt by the baby in Elizabeth’s womb, that same extraordinary sense of Jesus’ presence was felt by your baby. That Divine Presence conferred an

Original Blessing on that life within the womb, and that same Presence accompanied your baby into the everlasting embrace of Divine Love in Heaven. This was so experienced by John that he kicked for joy in the womb. When John kicked for joy in the womb Elizabeth realised that it was the baby carried in Mary’s womb who was responsible! But it is to Mary that she exults: ‘Of all women, you are the most blessed

and blessed is the fruit of your womb!’ We repeat this every time we recite the Hail Mary. On the eve of Christmas, let us join Elizabeth in celebrating Mary’s most wonderful pregnancy, by reciting the Hail Mary.

Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
