In today's Gospel, John answers this question of who Jesus is for him. Yet, he does it by taking a look at us - the Church. He sees us as a flock of sheep. And Jesus is our shepherd. Jesus says that his sheep follow him because they hear and recognize his voice. So, if we are true sheep, if we truly are catholic, we can distinguish the voice of Jesus, the voice of God, from all other voices. Therefore, if we are going to answer the question: Who is Jesus for us, we must first be able to hear God's voice and distinguish it from all other "voices". We all have heard the foreign "voices". These voices can come in the form of fundamentalism or literal-ism. These voices say that there is only one way to envision God and no other. They are the ones who believe that their own personal Jesus is the only authentic one. At times, it may even be difficult for us to distinguish the differ-ence between the voice of the true shepherd and the voice of a stranger. I think we need to look and ask ourselves the question: Do we ever follow "strange voices"? What voice do we follow? Do we at times listen to the voice that says it is alright to stay in bed and not go to Mass on Sunday's? Do we at times listen to the voice that says it is alright to "sin" a little bit? We all have to make choices. We all have to choose at times whether to listen to the voice of the good shepherd or the voice of the stranger. There is no question that we have a good shepherd in God. There is no question of God's love for us. The question is: what type of sheep are we? While I was out for my walk the other day a parishioner stopped and asked me if I knew when we would be able to get back to having mass each week. I told her that her guess is as good as mine! As you may have heard, both Governor Cuomo and Mayor De Blasio have indicated that any reopening of the state and city will be a grad-ual process. They have indicated that things will not get back to “normal” again for quite some time. With this in mind, I do know that the Archdiocese is in the process of considering different ways to gradu-ally begin the process of reopening our parishes. However when this happens I want to caution that things will not be able to be the same as they were before. Very likely we all will have to practice social distancing when masses resume. This will limit the number of people we will be able to have at our largest masses – the 6pm Saturday mass and the 11am Sunday mass. I suspect that parish groups will also have to limit the number of people attend-ing their prayer meetings and other gatherings. Our parish meeting room is small and we will very likely have to practice social distancing as all gatherings. I bring all this up because I do believe we will not be able to go back to doing things the way we did them before. This Covid 19 pandemic has changed the way we can interact with each other. It has changed the world. I have been discussing with people the possibilities of adjusting our mass schedule to prevent overcrowd-ing. Once we get some clear directives from the Archdiocese we will make the decisions that will enable us to gather as best we can practicing social distancing in a healthy and safe way. As we expected our Friday food pantry has seen an increase in people who come for food. In fact, it has almost doubled and likely will continue to get larger. Catholic Charities has been good about providing us with the needed canned goods and non-perishable items to distribute. But they themselves are limited in what they can pro-vide. In order to meet the increased demand in our food pantry we will now be accepting non-perishable food items and canned good that we can distribute to those who come to our pantry on Friday mornings. Specifically, we are in need of canned vegetables, beans, pasta sauce, pasta, rice and canned fish and meats. Please make sure the items you donate are not past their expiration date. The secretaries in the parish are still working from home so there is no one regularly answering the door of the priory. However, the church has been open through the chapel door on Valentine Ave for private each day during the week from 9am to 5pm. You can bring the items and drop them off in the church near the door of the former gift shop. Thank you for your generosity! Finally, we continue to monitor the phone. If you call and the phone is not answered please leave a mes-sage in my message box or in the mailbox of whomever you want to talk to. There is a directory in both English and Spanish if no one answers the phone. I have been returning my messages and those left on the main phone every day and forwarding the messages to other staff members that we receive. You of course can also contact us by email by sending the message to stsimonstockchruch@gmail.com We will forward the message to the proper person. As always stay healthy and safe and know that you are in our prayers.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Juan responde a esta pregunta de quién es Jesús para él. Sin embargo, lo hace echándo-nos un vistazo: la Iglesia. Nos ve como un rebaño de ovejas. Y Jesús es nuestro pastor.

Jesús dice que sus ovejas lo siguen porque escuchan y reconocen su voz. Entonces, si somos verdaderas ovejas, si realmente somos católicos, podemos distinguir la voz de Jesús, la voz de Dios, de todas las otras voces. Por lo tanto, si vamos a responder la pregunta: ¿Quién es Jesús para nosotros? Primero debemos poder escuchar la voz de Dios y distinguirla de todas las otras "voces".

Todos hemos escuchado las "voces" extranjeras. Estas voces pueden venir en forma de fundamentalismo o lite-ralismo. Estas voces dicen que solo hay una forma de visualizar a Dios y ninguna otra. Ellos son los que creen que su propio Jesús personal es el único auténtico. A veces, incluso puede ser difícil para nosotros distinguir la diferencia entre la voz del verdadero pastor y la voz de un extraño.

Creo que debemos mirar y hacernos la pregunta: ¿alguna vez seguimos "voces extrañas"? ¿Qué voz seguimos? ¿A veces escuchamos la voz que dice que está bien quedarse en la cama y no ir a misa los domingos? ¿A veces escu-chamos la voz que dice que está bien "pecar" un poco?

Todos tenemos que tomar decisiones. Todos tenemos que elegir a veces si escuchar la voz del buen pastor o la voz del extraño. No hay duda de que tenemos un buen pastor en Dios. No hay duda del amor de Dios por nosotros. La pregunta es: ¿qué tipo de ovejas somos?

Mientras salía a caminar el otro día, un miembro de la parroquia se detuvo y me preguntó si sabía cuándo po-dríamos volver a tener misa cada semana. ¡Le dije que su suposición es tan buena como la mía! Como habrá escucha-do, tanto el gobernador Cuomo como el alcalde de Blasio han indicado que cualquier reapertura del estado y la ciudad será un proceso gradual. Han indicado que las cosas no volverán a ser "normales" nuevamente durante bastante tiempo.

Con esto en mente, sé que la Arquidiócesis está en proceso de considerar diferentes formas de comenzar gra-dualmente el proceso de reapertura de nuestras parroquias. Sin embargo, cuando esto suceda, quiero advertir que las cosas no podrán ser las mismas de antes. Es muy probable que todos tengamos que practicar el distanciamiento social cuando se reanuden las misas. Esto limitará el número de personas que podremos tener en nuestras misas más grandes: la misa del sábado a las 6 p.m. y la misa del domingo a las 11 a.m. Sospecho que los grupos parroquiales también ten-drán que limitar el número de personas que asisten a sus reuniones de oración y otras reuniones. Nuestra sala de reunio-nes parroquiales es pequeña y es muy probable que tengamos que practicar el distanciamiento social en todas las reunio-nes.

Menciono todo esto porque creo que no podremos volver a hacer las cosas de la forma en que las hicimos antes. Esta pandemia de Covid 19 ha cambiado la forma en que podemos interactuar entre nosotros. Ha cambiado el mundo.

He estado discutiendo con la gente las posibilidades de ajustar nuestro horario de misas para evitar el hacina-miento. Una vez que obtengamos algunas directrices claras de la Arquidiócesis, tomaremos las decisiones que nos per-mitirán reunirnos lo mejor que podamos practicando el distanciamiento social de una manera saludable y segura.

Como esperábamos, nuestra despensa de alimentos del viernes ha visto un aumento en las personas que vienen a comer. De hecho, casi se ha duplicado y probablemente continuará creciendo. Caridades Católicas ha sido bueno al proporcionarnos los productos enlatados necesarios y los artículos no perecederos para distribuir. Pero ellos mismos están limitados en lo que pueden proporcionar. Con el fin de satisfacer la mayor demanda en nuestra despensa de alimentos, ahora aceptaremos alimentos no perecede-ros y alimentos enlatados que podemos distribuir a los que vienen a nuestra despensa los viernes por la mañana. Especí-ficamente, necesitamos verduras enlatadas, frijoles, salsa para pasta, pasta, arroz y pescado y carnes enlatados. Asegúre-se de que los artículos que dona no hayan pasado su fecha de vencimiento. Las secretarias de la parroquia todavía traba-jan desde su casa, por lo que no hay nadie que responda regularmente a la puerta del rectoría.
