FOURTH WEEK OF EASTER

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

O n this Good Shepherd Sunday we re-call Jesus’ promise to protect us from

harm, to rescue us when we stray and to guide us home at the end of the day. Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd and his followers as the sheep of his flock. He also proclaims his loving care for those who do not yet belong to his fold. As we gather for this celebration, let us resolve to hear and heed our Good Shep-herd’s voice, to know and follow where Jesus leads.

The first reading begins just after the Church’s first earthly shepherd, St. Peter, heals a man par-alyzed from birth. Peter courageously proclaims to the hostile authorities that this miraculous cure was done in the power of Jesus’ name: “the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone”, the foundation of our Christian faith, the one who conquers sin and death and brings salvation to the world. Let us take comfort that, from the beginning, the Christian community grows not in spite of difficulties but because of them. St. John deepens our Easter joy by reminding us that we are already God’s children now and that Jesus our Good Shepherd will never abandon us his flock, but lay down his life for his sheep.

This Saturday, May 1st, we honor St. Joseph the Worker: PRAYER FOR WORKERS Joseph, Patron Saint of workers, blending skill with charity, silent carpenter, we praise you! Joining work with honesty, you taught Christ with joy to labor, sharing his nobility. Joseph, close to Christ and Mary, lived with them in poverty, shared with them their home and labor, worked with noble dignity. May we seek God’s will as you did, leader of his family! Joseph, inspiration for workers, man of faith and charity, make us honest, humble, faithful, strong with Christ’s true liberty, Make our labor and our leisure fruitful to eternity!

Prayer for the Spirit of Work

God our Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe, in every age you call us to use and develop our gifts for the good of others. With St. Joseph as our guide, help us to do the work you have asked and come to the rewards you have promised. Please grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

T he theme of this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) “WE ARE THE CHURCH, TOGETHER” emphasizes Christ desire for us to come together as the Church and to continue His mission of

the Kingdom. As members of the one Body of Christ, the Church, we recognize our responsibility in supporting our Parish, as well as the ministries of the larger Church community, our Diocese, in its mission of service to the people of Brooklyn and Queens. Our goal for this year’s ACA is $25,248.00.

If you are on the ACA mailing list you will receive your pledge through the mail. All parishioners who have not yet made a commitment are invited to participate in the Appeal this weekend April 24/25 & next weekend May 1/2 when we will have the IN-PEW solicitation. Please consider making a pledge to this Appeal. When we satisfy the goal of the Diocese all money will then come back to our parish. For more information on the appeal & to watch the video there is a link on our parish website or you can go to www.annualcatholicappeal.org

In 1963, Pope Paul VI designated Good Shepherd Sunday as World Day of Prayer for Vocations (WDPV). Christ Jesus, the Good Shepherd, knows us well and gives his life for us. In the name of Christ Jesus we rejoice in the Good Shepherd who leads us into fullness of life.

ON GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY, in each year liturgical cycle the 4th Sunday of

Easter, the Gospel is always taken from the 10th chapter of John where Jesus

speaks of himself as the Good Shepherd. In today’s passage Jesus emphasizes the

self-sacrificing element in his own life: "The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep." He contrasts the Good Shepherd who owns

the sheep to someone who is simply hired to look after them. The hired man thinks

primarily of his own welfare and, if he sees a wolf coming, he takes off, leaving the sheep

to be attacked and scattered in fear and terror. Jesus, on the other hand, will not be like a hired person: "I lay down my life for my sheep." Jesus knows his sheep and they know him.

There is a mutual bond of love and intimacy. That love is compared to the deep mutual

relationship that exists between Jesus and his Father and with Jesus and the Church.

Why today is also a WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS, asking Jesus our Good Shepherd to call generous souls to serve the Lord’s flock in the Priesthood,

Diaconate and Religious Life.

Prayer for Vocations

Generous God, you show us the way that leads to everlasting life.

Through baptism you have called us to proclaim the Good News. Bless and strength-

en those who have made a commitment of service in the Church. Guide and give wis-

dom to those discerning their vocation. Enrich our Church with dedicated married and single people, with Priests, Deacons and with people in Consecrated Life. Filled

with your Holy Spirit we ask this blessing that we, your people, may follow Jesus,

our Good Shepherd, now and always. Amen.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PURSUING A VOCATION IN THE DIOCESE OF

BROOKLYN PLEASE CALL FR. SEAN SUCKIEL AT THE VOCATION OFFICE 718-827-2454

FROM OUR PARISH SCHOOL — ST. PETER CATHOLIC ACADEMY

“Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed.” (1 John 3:2)

As Catholic educators it is our life mission to serve the children of God. St. Peter Catholic Academy is home to students of all cultures, religions and ethnicities. Together we congregate under one Catholic roof, yet we learn and celebrate the vast traditions and beliefs of each student. Specifically, our 4th grade class, is a melting pot of differences. Many of the students in this grade have been members of St. Peter’s since Junior Pre-K. However, when a new student join’s the class, they make sure to welcome them with open arms and make them feel a part of the family. Ms. Piccolo fosters students’ relationships, as well as academics, through a think, pair, share group. In addition, most of their in-class discussion is student lead. This show cases every single student in addition to highlighting their unique opinions and personalities. Below you will find a picture of Ms. Piccolo scaffolding one of her think, pair, share groups!
