Webberville Schools millage renewal on Nov. 5 ballot By Brian Friddle, Superintendent We are approximately three weeks from the school district election which will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. The voters of the Webberville Community School District will be asked to consider a renewal of our sinking fund millage. This millage has been used to improve school facilities including new roofs, replacing windows, and improving the insulation to promote savings in our heating costs. We will be asking the voters to renew this millage to continue to pay for these renovations and other maintenance and improvement costs throughout the district. We are seeking a renewed millage of .9807 so there is no increase in the annual amount that taxpayers are currently contributing to support the efforts of our school system. A positive vote on November 5 will help the school to remain ¿nancially stable through these dif¿cult economic times. The district will face some signi¿cant ¿nancial distress without the renewed millage and cuts would be necessary to balance our existing budgets. Please consider voting on November 5, and thank you for your continued support of our schools!

Fowlerville Varsity Soccer Team earns rst victory of the season The Fowlerville Soccer team earned its rst victory of the season in dramatic fashion last Tuesday night after defeating the harlotte Orioles in a shootout. The Glads hosted the match. harlotte scored the rst goal after only eight minutes when they were awarded a penalty kick. fter that, Fowlerville maintained the majority of the possession and had numerous scoring opportunities, outshooting the Orioles seven to two. Twenty-seven minutes into the game Fowlerville e ualized the score when hase ast buried the ball in the back of the net off a pass from Will Massey. The Gladiators saw numerous second-half opportunities as well as out-shooting

harlotte twelve to one. Unfortunately, the Gladiators were unable to score again and after eighty minutes of regulation time the score was still tied 1 - 1. The game went directly into a shootout where three of Fowlerville’s ve shooters capitalized on their penalty shot. Scoring goals for the Gladiators were Will Massey, yan Gross, and Josh opeland. harlotte also scored on three of their rst ve shots, so a si th and nal shooter was re uired to break the tie. harlotte went rst and Jacob Jarvis came up huge for the Gladiators by saving his second penalty kick on the night. That allowed Bailey dwards the opportunity to seal the deal for the Gladiators after calmly stepping to the line and knocking in his penalty shot. It was a great effort by all the boys. Fowlerville played in one nal cup game last Thursday against aton apids at home.

The curtain rises on Nov. 1, at Woodshire Place Banquet Facility. What can you expect from an audience participation murder mystery? Fun the minute you walk in the door! Doors open at 6:00 p.m. when you’ll get a chance to mingle with Madam Zelda Von Schpookum, Professor Lionel Specter, and other cast members as they drop hints about themselves and the show and give you a chance to ask questions. At 6:30 p.m. you’ll enjoy a delicious lasagna buffet (Cash Bar), while the cast keeps a low pro le. The main show starts after dinner, at around 7:30 p.m. The action takes place at The Mouldering Pines Inn, where the Bogeyman Outreach Organization (BOO), a support group for ghosts, is holding its annual convention. As BOO members, you’ll observe a séance, meet the Inn’s ghoul-in-residence, and learn dark secrets about every cast member. Besides Madam Zelda and the Professor, you’ll also meet Phyllis and Jim Lodge, the Inn’s squabbling owners, Dana Skullery and Fox Smolder, from BOO’s Washington, D.C., chapter (or are they?), and Janet from Another Planet, a DJ with a past. Will Madam Zelda help the ghost relocate? Will the Lodges stop arguing long enough to get their hands on the treasure map? Is the Professor who he claims to be? And who committed the murder? The murder? That’s right—

the murder! Someone will be ruthlessly murdered at the end of the show, and it’s up to you to solve the crime! Prizes will be awarded to the rst people to correctly guess both the murderer and the motive. Tickets for the dinner and show are $25 and can be purchased at Dr. Tim’s of ce at 7 6 S. rand Ave, Fowlerville, or by emailing [email protected]. For information call Diana at 517 223- 0 . * * *7TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL On October 7, the 7th grade lady Glads traveled to Jackson to face the Raiders of Jackson Catholic Middle School in a split A/B match up of two games each. Both lady glads teams fell in split match play to a tough raiders team. The B team played tough, but lost in two games with scores of 21-23 and 8-21. Leading the B team in service points was Gabby Jolliff with 6 points and Maggie Hamann with 3. Aliza Opolka, Mary Farmer, Kristin Dotson and Amaya Williams each added one service point. The back row saw a lot of action last night and was defended with pure determination by Ryanne Maddox, Kristin Dotson and Kyla Chappell. The A team also fell short in their 2 game match against this tough Jackson team with scores of 6-21 and 15-21. The A team lady glads were led by Natilee Wilkinson with 7 service points. Jackie Jarvis added three more while Madison Shaw, Ginelle Leslie and Leah Ash each added one. Once again the back row was kept on their toes with action. Lani Burnie, Chelsea ODonnell, Olivia Olmsted and Jiluanne Seiter all defended that back line with some great digs!! Leah Ash added one kill on the front side, while Geni Winiarski and Meaghan Douglass added some great front row protection. The Lady Glads will next travel to Corunna on Wednesday to face them in regular match play!! Great job ladies against a tough Raider team!! Go glads!!!

* * *8TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL The 8th grade girls volleyball team traveled to Williamston on Oct. 2 and both the “A” and “B” teams served their way to their 2nd win of the season, which happened to be a BIG win against Williamston. The “B” team played cohesively as they used good volleys and strategic hits to take the “Sting” out of the Hornets. Top servers of the night were Bella Phillips with a whopping 13 points, while Kaeli Dillard and Brittany Osborne both added 6. The nal score for the three games was 21-12, 21-17, and 12-15. The “A” team also played as a solid team, rallying in the third game when they were down 0-5. The girls continued their upward momentum to come away with nal scores of 17-21, 21-16, and 15-13. We had impressive stats at the serving line with Valerie Winn serving 10 points, both Haley Szumlinski and Maddie Coon with 6, Erica Fox with 5, and Mersades McDowell with 4 points. The most glaring statistic of the evening was when both teams turned their

36% serving into 60%! We feel that both teams have turned the corner last night and are on their way to a winning season. Come support your Lady Glads next week as they host Jackson Catholic on Monday and Corunna on Wednesday. Games start at 4:30, we’ll see you there. On Monday Oct. 7 the 8th grade girls volleyball team hosted Jackson Catholic in its mid-season match-up. Unfortunately both teams fell short to a very dif cult team. The B team was led by top servers: Abby St. Charles and Bella Phillips, both with 3 points. The B team had a hard time receiving some of the impressive opponent’s serves, but rallied in the third game to almost win a set. The scores of the three games were 11-21, 13-21, and 12-15. The girls are not defeated and will come out swinging hard on Wed. to beat Owosso! The A team was lead in service points by Mersades McDowell with 5, Haley Szumlinski with 4, and Erica Fox with 3 points. The girls never lost momentum and gave our home crowd a good show with their impressive team work, their ability to set up play, and their defensive digs against a hard-hitting Raiders Team. The match scores were 11-21, 17-21, and 4-15.

* * *CROSS COUNTRY The Fowlerville Junior High Cross Country team did well Monday in Mason. The girls team nished 5th place out of 10 teams. Out of 76 girls, Sophia Spalding came in 17th with a PR of 14:57. Kendall Trinka had a PR of 20:01 and Gabrielle Heiser had a PR of 20:18. The boys team also came in 5th out of 10 teams. Out of 133 boys, Tyler Steinhelper came in 5th, Aaron Davis had 16th place and Chris Davis took the 19th spot. Our 6th graders also did well with Gabby Juopperi and Olivia DuFore each having a PR of 17:53 and Lucas Smith with a PR of 18:58. Great job!

PARENTS OFTEN NEVER KNOW!Dear Fellow Parents,

Bullying can range from severe physical abuse to very mild “silent treatment” or exclusion by friends. Both can have long lasting and devastating affects on children. Many parents never know about the mild and moderate bullying of their child.

According to the book Bullies and Victims in Schools; 96% of children will be bullied at least once in their lifetime. 46% of those children will suffer poor grades or will abstain from extra curricular activities because of the bullying. 2% of those children will commit suicide because of constant harassment from classmates.

Is your child being bullied? Look for these signs in your child:

1. Bruises, cuts, scratches, torn clothing that cannot be explained and complaints about not feeling well.

2. Reluctance to go to school or requests to change school.

3. Books, money, lunch or belongings stolen, damaged, scattered around or “lost”.

4. Excuses to avoid going to school, or insistence that you take him/her to school even though you live close by.

5. Insomnia or bed-wetting.

6. Frequent requests for money.

7. A sudden, unexplained deterioration in class work, and/or homework.

8. Lack of participation in school activities, staying near the teacher during breaks.

9. Anxiety, insecurity, distress, unhappiness, secretiveness, mood changes and anger.

10. Claims of “I’m okay” when questioned about obvious unhappiness.

11. Low self-esteem.

12. Unhappiness at the end of weekends or school vacations.

13. Few friends or no friends in class and is not invited to birthday parties or other social activities.

14. Teasing or being laughed at by his/her peer group.

Bullying is a very difficult problem to stop. Our mission at Ohana Karate is to ensure every child has the right to feel safe and develop to their full potential. I feel that it is our responsibility to be a community leader and center for the fight against bullying. Can this crisis be stopped?

First, we must develop an ethos in which bullying is always unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Second, it takes a whole community to save our children. We must arm the victim, bully, bystander, parents, schools and community with the anti-bullying tools and systems. Please contact us if we can help you or your family.

Michigan House ReportCindy Denby,47th District

As most of you know, October is breast cancer aware-ness month. This month is devoted to taking the time to educate women of all ages about the risks of breast cancer and helping raise funds for research and treatment. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. I’m sure most of us know at least one woman who has been diagnosed with the illness, which is deemed the second-leading cause of death for women. There are many risk factors to be aware of: family history, age, health and race can play a large role in the development of this cancer. Although there are many genetic factors that can increase your risk of getting breast cancer, early detection can help stop the cancer’s advancement. The most effective way to detect breast cancer is to get a mammogram. Women over the age of 40 should get a mammogram once every 1-2 years and women under 40 with high risk should discuss the matter with their physician. Every third Friday in October is National Mammography day; it will be recognized on October 18th in 2013. I encour-age everyone to consider the importance of mammograms on this day. Another way to detect breast cancer is to perform at-home self-examinations. According to the Johns Hopkins Medical Center, 40 percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who felt a lump in their breast. Although we put a special focus on this month dedicated to the awareness of breast cancer, we should always be aware of these risks and prevention tips year-round. I encourage women to perform self-examinations, get mammograms, research more about breast cancer and nd out ways you can support the cause.

There are over 70 harvest festivals in the state and they are fun for the whole family. Many festivals feature activities such as scarecrow building, pumpkin carving, hayrides, and costume contests. The festivals often extend through the weekend so it can be a great family day trip or something different for your fall camping trip. For more information about locations and activities visit the DNR website at www.michigan.gov/dnr and search for Harvest and Haunts.

Webberville Library NewsBy Head Librarian Peg Mawby

Just a few days ago, a young parent asked me if we had Beverly Cleary’s Ramona books. She was in the library with her children, selecting picture books, board books, and music, and told me that she wanted to begin reading the Ramona stories to her daughter. he little girl looked to be about ve years old. We do have many of Cleary’s books and I helped the

woman nd the title that she wanted. I could tell that she had loved the Ramona books as a young girl and was looking forward to passing the stories on to her child. What a fantastic way to encourage a love of reading to

children! Sharing the books you loved as a kid really works, especially when you begin early. When my own son was little, I read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books with him. I chose that series because I had loved the books when I was a girl. I think that when you read something you love, it shows. Eventually, of course, your child will want to select titles

that interest him or her rather than what you’ve picked out. When that happens, feel proud! That means that you have done your job well. You have passed on the joy of reading—now you get to enjoy watching it blossom and grow. Capital Area District Libraries’ Webberville branch is

When Leaves Fall, or Don’t! At some time during our early elementary school days we’ve all been assigned to gather a leaf collection. During the fall of the year we were given this assignment with the dual purposes in mind of learning the names of the trees the leaves came from and appreciating the beauty of autumn. We’ve all done it. At some later date, most of us learned that the trees our beautiful collections came from were collectively called “deciduous.” But I’m betting that, like me, few of us ever learned what the term deciduous actually meant. Clearly, the label referred to those trees that dropped their leaves in the autumn of the year, the opposite of “coniferous,” the term referring to those that retain their foliage and remain green. But there is more to it than that. There are reasons beyond providing for colorful leaf collections that deciduous trees drop their leaves in the fall. Here in Michigan and in large parts of the world, the climate varies widely from summer to winter. Because of this and also because of dry stretches in some areas, trees and many shrubs shed their leaves as unnecessary, so that moisture can be conserved for their roots, trunks and large branches. This botanical process is called “abscission.” Quite a few of these deciduous plants, especially decorative varieties, blossom during lea ess times. Here in Michigan it’s during springtime, allowing these plants to take advantage of the opportunity for improved wind transmission of pollen. A lea ess period also increases the visibility of the owers to insects, helping with pollination. It seems now that I’ve strayed quite a distance from the leave collections of youngsters. But they were being made aware of leaf shapes, such as smooth, ne toothed, double toothed and lobed, which help them considerably in learning the tree each came from. But as we are not adults reading this, the term deciduous can contain helpful information if we dig deeper. Landscaping is a perfect example. Whether for the beauti cation of our homes or to bring birds and animals to our property, a little knowledge beyond leaf color is a good idea. Many of our most attractive home properties contain a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees, as well as a decorative small tree or two and shrubs. They are chosen for their shape, size, owers, fruit and foliage, and to make the best selections it’s necessary to know some thing about the soil where they’ll be planted. And since most of us are not expert in this subject, a good source of information is the county Extension Agent. Often closely associated with the latest agricultural information from the region’s colleges and universities, the agent can provide the “graduate information” to be added to our elementary discoveries of years ago. During this autumn season when the landscape changes

almost on a daily basis, those beautiful leafy encounters of so many years ago, come back into mental focus. We see maples, oaks, elms, aspen, birch and sassafras, blazing along the roadways, and I for one, am encouraged to nd out more about them. The fun is in the knowledge as well as in the color of the leaves. Like our friends, they have names and even personalities, those trees and their leaves, and add to the richness and beauty of our lives! It’s true whether those leaves fall or don’t.

* * *Attention parents of students who ride Fowlerville school buses: please note that bus drop-off times will be approximately 5-10 minutes later than usual for most students who live south of Grand River Avenue (the center of town). The intersection of Grand River and Grand Street will be closed for another couple of weeks. The alternate routing caused by the construction and detour will result in delayed drop-offs. Pick-up times should remain fairly consistent. Thank you for your understanding throughout this construction project!

* * *Lost & Found- Last year Smith Elementary made 2 LARGE

donations to local charities of items found around the school. We prefer that all lost items be returned to their owners! Currently we have one small basket of lost things on the wooden bench in the entryway of the building. If the stack grows, it will be moved to the back of the cafeteria. There is some very nice clothing in there but we have no idea who it belongs to. Write your child’s name on their belongings: extra shoes, hats, sweatshirts, jackets, etc.

* * *Volunteers: If you are planning to help in the classroom, attend eld trips, or have lunch in the cafeteria, you must complete the Volunteer Application and be approved through a background check. The sooner you complete the application, the sooner you can be added to the list. It currently takes about 3 weeks for the process. Thank you for your patience and understanding in the meantime.
