WHAT WE DO: FOX-VPS manufacture precision machined components, castings, & finished assemblies to a variety of different markets. We also design & manufacture specialist hydraulic cylinders and fire fighting equipment for a global market.

HISTORY: FOX-VPS was formed in January 2004 from the amalgamation of two well established companies; The Fox Engineering Co. (Bisley) and Visual Planning Systems. Established in 1939 and 1946 respectively the company now forms part of a small group employing 65 people with an annual turnover of approximately 4 million.[top]

CASTING: Sand and gravity die castings upto 200kg and investment casting upto 20kg. Typical batch sizes 1-500. Materials used include aluminium, phosphor bronze, and other yellow metals. Full spectrographic melt analysis, dye penetrant NDT, x-ray, and mechanical testing is available as well as in-house heat treatment. >> more info[top]

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT: We have been producing fire fighting monitors and foam proportioning systems for over 20 years. HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS: We produce a range of standard and special application hydraulic cylinders for uses such as foundation piling rigs, fork lift trucks, tunneling machines, drilling rigs, presses, waste compactors, aircraft ground handling equipment and container port cranes. INSPECTION: FOX-VPS hold the BS EN ISO 9001 accreditation and operate a dedicated quality control facility.

EQUIPMENT: Our dedicated quality control department is set up with the following:

CMM: IMS impact Travel X of 500mm: Y of 600mm: Z of 450mm. Part programming and printing of results used for statistical analysis.

CMM: Ferranti fitted with Quadra-chek 3000 - Travel X of 600mm: Y of 400mm: Z of 400mm.

AIR GAUGING: For measurement of tapers and holes.

GENERAL CASTING TOLERANCES: Standard tolerances, casting draft angles and shrinkage allowances are detailed below:

INVESTMENT STANDARD TOLERANCES:Castings should be within linear tolerances of 0.15 upto 150mm and 0.05 upto 25mm thereafter.

SAND CASTING STANDARD TOLERANCES:Castings should be within linear tolerances of 1.0 upto 150mm and 0.20 upto 25mm thereafter.

PLEASE NOTE: The above tolerances are for guidance purposes only and may vary where contraction is hindered by design of the component / mould.[top]

CASTING DRAFT ANGLES: The draft or amount of taper given to the pattern to facilitate withdrawing from the mould depends somewhat on the size and shape of the pattern. A general guide would be 1 to 2 degrees of taper per side:[top]

SHRINKAGE ALLOWANCE: Shrinkage allowances are approximate values only, since the exact allowance depends upon the size and shape of the casting and resistance of the mould. It is, therefore, possible that more than one shrinkage allowance will be required for different parts of the same pattern / casting. A general guide for aluminium alloy castings would be 1.3%.[top]

These range from the harsh environment typical of civil engineering applications through mechanical handling equipment and on to high quality applications in fire fighting vehicles and hovercrafts.

SPECIFICATIONS:Below is a list of the basic cylinder specifications and terminology used, made with reference to the drawing on the right.[top]

1. CYLINDER TUBEASTM A513 Grade 1026 and DIN 2393 ST52-3 BK with a finish of 0.4UM Ra Max. Other material and finishes are available. [top]

2. PISTON RODHigh quality chrome of a thickness to meet or exceed Class 9 (ISO 4540) after exposure for a minimum of 40 hrs (salt spray test ISO3768). Induction hardened steel or stainless steel to BS 970 Part 1 421S29 or 316S31 and Chrome with Nickel underlay are offered as options. [top]

3. NECK GLANDHigh quality cast iron to BS1452: 1990 Grade 250 or Phosphor Bronze to BS140 PB1, PB2 and BS970 Part 1: 080A42 with PTFE insets. The glands are designed to be fully lubricated to ensure long service life. [top]

4. PISTONOne piece steel design of robust construction. For heavy-duty applications an additional bearing ring may be added. [top]

5. OIL INLETBSP female connections are standard but we offer male BSP, JIC and Metric alternatives. Also offered are elbows and pipes to manifold blocks. [top]

6. SEALSWe take great care to match the seal material and design to the customers requirements and take into account the maximum surface speed, the life expectation and the environment in which the cylinder operates. The selection of the correct seal is vital to the successful operation of our cylinders. [top]

7. MOUNTINGSA wide range from simple pins, to specialist self-aligning bearings, to trunnion and flange mountings to suit individual needs. [top]

8. WORKING PRESSUREOur standard working pressure range is up to 206 Bar (3000 PSI). Please consult our technical department if you need to operate at higher pressures of up to 700 Bar (10,000 PSI).

9. TESTINGAll cylinders are subjected to a static pressure test 50% above the maximum working pressure. They are stamped with a serial number. Full traceability is ensured through our recorded test/inspection sheets. [top]

10. FINISHCylinders are sprayed with a black oxide primer ready for your topcoat. Other finishes are available on request. [top]

OPTIONAL FEATURES

VALVESPilot operated check valves and hose burst valves can be built into the cylinders for safety critical applications. Over-centre and check valves can also be fitted into external manifold blocks. [top]

CUSHIONINGSimple or fully adjustable cushioning can be provided at one or both ends of the cylinder stroke. A check valve can be incorporated into the cylinder design to allow unrestricted starting on the return stroke. Cushioning features will affect cylinder length depending on the rate of deceleration required. Contact our technical department for details. [top]

BLEED SCREWSThese can be provided and their location relative to the inlet connections should form part of the specification.[top]

This new range of Stainless Steel cylinders has been added due to the increase in demand for corrosion-resistant hydraulics. These cylinders can be used with normal hydraulic oil where external environmental

conditions are not suitable for mild steel cylinders. Due to the internals being made completely from stainless steel, these cylinders are suitable to work with water. [top]

FIRE EQUIPMENT

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT: The company have been producing fire fighting monitors and foam proportioning components for over 25 years for major CFR Vehicle manufacturers in the U.K. Europe, USA and Japan.

Having acquired the 6 monitor design rights from Chubb we have subsequently produced and marketed a complete range of products under our own design

Our products can be found protecting both major and secondary airports throughout the world, along with dockside installation and Jetty systems.

The basis of our system uses the PT2200 6 spherical head turret for mounting a variety of nozzles or branch pipes with capacities up to 10,000 l/min at working pressures up to 14 bar. The system is hydraulically operated for elevation and rotation and is balanced with gas springs for manual operation or manual override in case of hydraulic or power failure.

BRANCH SIZES FOR VEHICLES (ASPIRATING) FB2000, 3000, 4500, 5000, 6000 & 7000. Crash fire rescue vehicle aspirating foam monitors with single or dual output ranging from 2000 to 7000 l/min.

BRANCH SIZES FOR VEHICLES & JETTIES (NON-ASPIRATING) WN6000 and 10000. Non-aspirating foam monitors with fixed output ranging from 6000 to 10,000 l/min.

BRANCH SIZES FOR JETTIES (ASPIRATING) slimjet (3200 1min) and super slimjet (6400 1/min). Aspirating foam monitors with single output.

POP UP Vehicle monitor extension system for turret (Pop-Up). This will extend the turret upwards there by giving greater depression angles for fighting fires or spillages closer to the vehicle. Stroke lengths up to 500mm are available. The unit has a 150mm (6) clear through bore. It is extended by means of hydraulic cylinders, which are controlled by solenoid-operated valves. These systems are equipped with manual override for emergency use.[top]

HYDRAULIC POWER PACKS & VALVES These are normally supplied as 12V or 24V DC systems. The power pack is separate from the valve bank making fitting and installation variable depending on valve bank configuration required. The valves are standard solenoid operated. (Bang/bang).[top]

OPERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM The monitor actions can be controlled with electric joystick controllers linked to the hydraulic system, either in the cab or on the roof or both options. We offer two types:

Three function type that will control the elevation, rotation and Jaw pattern Four function type that will control as the three function, but with the added feature of controlling the dual flow output

MONITOR AUTO-PARKING Auto-parking of the monitor turret and locking system can be integrated with a standard system or with a pop-up unit. This allows the unit to be rotated automatically and locked ready for the vehicle to move off, without the operator leaving the cab.[top]

HEADLIGHTS Turret assemblies can be fitted with either 12V (55W) or 24V (70W) DC spotlights that are mounted each side of the turret barrel.

VISUAL INDICATION SYSTEM Two 70mm Square panel mounted gauges showing elevation and rotation position of the turret barrel relative to the vehicle centre. These gauges are controlled via a small aluminium box, where the gain is adjusted to set the gauges.

FOAM PROPORTIONING SYSTEMS These are offered with aluminium electroless nickel-plating and in various other configurations. Contact our technical department for specific requirements.[top]
