Howard Pressman, CFP® President’s Message

Hello and Happy New Year! As we kick off 2018, I want to express my gratitude to Bryan Beatty, our outgoing

President. Uncertainties in our profession have created new challenges for the field, but Bryan’s exceptional

stewardship, coupled with the tireless efforts of our Board of Directors, helped our chapter successfully navigate these

issues. Thank you, Bryan, and the rest of the Board, for all your efforts and success over the past year.

To be sure, the uncertainties we faced last year still linger. While some may have been delayed, we are still coming to

terms with a profession that I believe is entering its adolescence. Investment advice and planning has been around for

many years, but as a profession, Financial Planning is relatively young. A profession requires education, specialized

knowledge, certifications and continued learning and for those who have made a commitment to comprehensive

financial planning and made it the center of their practice, I believe the label appropriate.

While we understand the commitment to knowledge and excellence our profession requires, the public may not

always recognize this. To elevate our profession in the eyes of the consumer, we have some important work to do. As

Financial Planning matures, we will have to accept standardization of certain aspects of our work. Whether it’s

standardized titles that easily convey information such as education and expertise (Financial Planner and Investment

Advisor, for example) or standardized responsibilities owed to our clients (such as that of a fiduciary), I believe it

wise to not only accept these changes, but to champion them. As professionals, we should view leading these efforts

as essential to building trust with consumers. Not surprisingly, the devil will be in the details. The Financial Planning

community can play a vital role in crafting these policies so we can help consumers make informed decisions and feel

confident in seeking the guidance they need, while also ensuring that the policies stay true to our profession,

do not create barriers to efficiently running our firms, or impede the way we serve our clients. It is better to have a

seat at the table than to have rules levied upon us by outsiders or other conflicted parties who don’t fully understand

what we do. This is one of the primary reasons I am an active and engaged member of the Financial Planning

Association - so I and the many professionals like me have a voice.

This year’s Winter Symposium on January 26th promises to be one of the best Financial Planning conferences of the

year. Come and learn from luminaries such as Mark Tibergien, Amy Florian and Michael Kitces among others. We

will also present our Outstanding Service Awards to three Outstanding Members: Barry Glassman, CFP®, Ken

Robinson, CFP®, and Eleanor Blayney, CFP®. Please see our announcement about these Outstanding Members in

this Newsletter.

And don’t miss our annual Career Day on February 16th where you’ll have the opportunity to meet many talented

students and job seekers, as well as hear from author and retirement expert Jonathan Guyton. In March, we will

welcome Ben Lewis, Director of Public Relations for FPA, to present another much needed and informative Media

Training program. More programs for 2018 will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

Our profession comes with great responsibility, and we change lives every day by creating more secure futures for

our clients and their families. Thank you for all you do to represent our field with the highest standards of

professionalism and excellence, and I wish you all a happy, healthy, and successful New Year!

Best Regards,

Howard Howard Pressman, CFP®

Launching the Encore Group, a new FPA NCA Community

A growing number of newer FPA NCA members are just starting out in our profession as career changers. Like many

of our clients, they are launching second careers – taking the Certified Financial Planner coursework either online or

through a local certification program. This new group will encourage networking between established planners and

new entrants to the field, and will offer opportunities for idea sharing and camaraderie for newly credentialed planners

who don’t quite fit the NexGen mold.

TAXATION INTERVIEW PROGRAM

Georgetown Law is again partnering with New York University School of Law to sponsor the nation's premier

recruitment program for graduate tax students, the Taxation Interview Program (TIP). TIP enables private and

public sector employers to interview, on one day (February 23, 2018) and in one place (Embassy Suites by Hilton

Crystal City National Airport), current LL.M. in Taxation students from Georgetown Law and NYU Law.

Georgetown Law students pursuing a Certificate in Estate Planning, together with an LL.M. in Taxation, will also

participate in TIP.

Since 2001, top law firms, government agencies, corporations, and major accounting firms from across the

country have participated in the Taxation Interview Program. Employers can pre-screen candidates for interviews,

and they can also participate in TIP through a resume collection option.

Georgetown Law cordially invites you and your organization to participate in TIP 2018. For further information

about TIP, please view the TIP brochure [https://www.law.georgetown.edu/academics/academic-

programs/graduate-programs/careers/recruitment/taxation-interview-program/upload/TIP_brochure-final.pdf] and

visit the TIP website [http://www.law.georgetown.edu/graduate/TIP]. Employer registration is available online

and will remain open until January 19, 2018.

Why We Work – Video Testimonials

By Sam Boyd, FPA NCA Public Relations Director

In a world where information has become saturation and fees are being compressed by Robo advisers and

algorithms, it is more important than ever to put the person back into personal-finance.

Introducing why we work, a joint campaign between the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital

Area and Motley Fool Wealth Management, where we highlight the human side of financial planning, will debut at

our January 2018 Winter Symposium! The Why We Work campaign was created to capture short stories of

financial planners and their inspiration for why they work.

The micro volunteering theme for this year's FPA National Capital Area Board of Directors is "Do One Thing".

We've taken micro volunteering to the particle level and are asking you to answer one of five questions that will

allow you to highlight why it is that you do what you do.

At the Winter Symposium on January 26th, 2018, the Motley Fool and the Financial Planning Association of the

National Capital Area will have a booth set up to capture your answers to the questions below:

1. What is the most impactful financial planning recommendation that you've made in your career and why?

2. If you could thank one of your clients for something what would it be and why? If they were here right

now with you what would you say to them?

3. If you could provide yourself a piece of advice at the beginning of your career what would you say and

why?

4. What was your motivation for getting into this business and what motivates you today? If your motivation

has changed, why?

5. If you could erect a billboard in the middle of town with a financial planning related message, what would

it say?

By participating in the Why We Work campaign at the Winter Symposium, you'll receive a professionally edited

copy of your video response. You will be able to brand this video with your logo and use it on your website or

through social media marketing channels. We estimate a cost of $500 - $1,000 to have this work done

professionally with a videographer if you prepared it on your own. This benefit comes at no charge.

We have even negotiated bulk group pricing to have your Why We Work testimonial animated by a professional

whiteboard artist to take your testimonial to a whole new level; talk about a win-win situation!

The best of the best will be compiled into a short film that the FPA National Capital Area will use for public

relations enhancement and spreading the value of financial planning to the community of our colleagues and

clients at large.

Keep in mind you must attend the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area Winter Symposium

to participate in the Why We Work campaign. Follow us on Twitter @FPANationalCap to keep up-to-date with

Why We Work and begin to consider how you'll answer these five important questions.

Help us help you by putting the person back in personal-finance. After all, it's why we work. See the

announcement here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MhQddmtqRo

Why hire a Summer Associate? A better question is why not? Kelly McNerney, CFP®, Career Fair Chair, NexGen Director

Bringing on a seasonal associate to help ease capacity issues can free up an advisor’s time to focus on business

development, strategic planning, and improved processes. Interns are an especially valuable resource for

Associate Advisors, as being able to temporarily offload some of their responsibilities affords them additional

time to focus on professional growth and developing to the next stage of their career. Interns can also assist in

implementing many of those wish list projects that you never seem to quite get around to in the average workday:

beneficiary confirmations, Medicare letters, Roth conversion reviews, data gathering, etc.

Additionally, a seasonal internship is a great way to do a “trial run” of potential future employees. It gives you

several months’ worth of data on which to assess a potential new hire: how strong are their technical skills, how

quickly do they learn, do they show initiative, can they handle stress, how do they interact with clients, are they a

good fit with the firm’s culture? So when you need to hire a new Associate, you already have a pool of pre-vetted

candidates to choose from. In fact, we at FJY have just hired one of our former summer interns (discovered at the

2016 FPA Career Day) who will join our firm as an Associate Financial Advisor when he graduates from Virginia

Tech this spring.

FJY recruits candidates each year from the FPA NCA Career Day, which attracts an average of 75 of the top

financial planning undergraduates from schools throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for a full day of interviews

and panels. While FJY uses Career Day as an opportunity to hire Summer Associates, there are also

undergraduates in attendance who are applying for full time positions.

The 5th Annual FPA NCA Career Day will be on Friday, February 16th from 8-5 at the Dulles Hyatt in Herndon.

There are only 30 employer spots available, and registration closes at noon on January 24th, so register today to

make sure you don’t shortchange the future of your firm. Please contact Career Day Chair, Kelly McNerney of

FJY Financial, for details regarding sponsorship opportunities!

Call for Study Group Participants! Please respond if you are Interested!

I am keen on joining or starting a local area study group of allied professionals and willing to spearhead the effort.

Although this is subject to consent of participants, my initial thoughts are that it must have the following

attributes:

1. 8-12 members

2. Meet quarterly for half day. Dates to be announced in advance.

3. Participants must be full time in the business minimum of 3-5 years and have a valid certification such as

CFP, CPA, JD, CLU, ChFC, MBA, etc.

4. The idea is to pick from different sub-specialties in our industry and allied professions and no more than

one per firm.

5. Costs to be shared equally even by non-attendees so that there is an incentive to attend and not miss out.

6. One member is on the “hot seat” at every meeting to give a detailed presentation followed by Q&A.

Summary updates from other participants.

Please let me know of your interest! Thanks, Vijay
