2016First Presbyterian Day School exists for the purpose of educating and equipping students to change the world for God’s glory. We pursue this purpose while holding fast to a set of core values that we will not compromise. These values include: Seeking to glorify God in everything we do and say; Teaching a Biblical world life view; Supporting families; Pursuing excellence; Maintaining integrity; and a continual commitment to advancing God’s kingdom in all of our pursuits.

Our visions & values

Classes began at FPD in September 1970, following a particularly rainy week.

It was so muddy the day before school started that board members and parents were still out laying sod at midnight, with only their car headlights for illumination.

Right in the middle of it all

was Harriet Comer, a member of the school’s original board of trustees and a key player in the birth and nurture of the school.

She laughs when she remembers that first meeting back in 1969. The school was a vision they all shared, Comer said, but nobody had any real understanding of how to pull it all together — much like a first-time parent.

DONORSPOTLIGHT

HARRIET COMER

The following months were a learning experience for everyone around the table as they transformed the school from a dream into a reality. They found a location and a builder, discussed potential names for the school and voted on various wordings of the mission statement.

In the years since, FPD has grown from a grammar school with a faculty of nine into a mature institution teaching grades 3K-12, greater and stronger than even the most optimistic of its founding “parents” had ever dreamed.

“I cannot believe today what I see when I go out there,” Comer said. “It’s thrilling how the Lord has blessed us.”

Comer’s enduring legacy is everywhere you look at FPD, from the red graduation robes to the tradition of Baccalaureate. Even now, more than 40 years since that first organizational meeting, she continues to contribute to the school.

Comer understands from her years on the board how crucial financial gifts are.

“It helped us get the faculty we wanted, keep the tuition as low as we could,” she said. “I saw then how important this extra giving was. It’s wonderful what that money does for the school.”

Like a parent with her child, Comer feels a deep attachment to and interest in the school. However, her perspective on giving extends beyond sentiment, even beyond the benefit to its current students.

“Education is just crucial to the future of our country,” she said. “My giving or anyone else’s giving, it is truly an investment in the future. It’s not just for today. It’s for the 10th generation.”

KEVIN & KRISTI LYLES

Kristi Lyles first noticed the tears in her husband Kevin’s eyes.

Her immediate thought: “Something’s wrong.”

Kevin had just tucked in his 8-year-old daughter, Kathryn, for the night. As father and daughter began to say their prayers, Kathryn told Kevin about the testimony she heard that afternoon from her second grade teacher, Carol Albright.

She then told her father she wanted to pray to receive Christ that night.

“She even told Kevin ‘I thought I had to wait until I was older, daddy. But I can do that now?’ ” Kristi recalled. “Our little child, it was very real to her to want to receive Christ that night absolutely because of the testimony Carol gave to that class.”

Recounting the experience nearly a decade later, Kristi and Kevin still fight back tears of joy.

Having just enrolled their two children, Kathryn and Marshall, at FPD after spending the previous years at another local school, the Lyles were still wrestling with their decision to transfer.

Until that night.“At that point, we said we will never question this

again,” Kristi said.“There was the fruit right away,” Kevin added. The Lyles were initially attracted to FPD following

what they both called a “radical salvation experience” shortly after their second child was born.

“Your priorities completely change when that type of change happens in your life,” Kristi said. “You realize (your children) are spending eight hours a day there and we want them to hear the truth above everything else.”

Another selling point for the Lyles was the individual attention students receive.

“One thing (teachers and administrators) kept saying was they really focus on the individual child and where their gifts and strengths are,” Kristi said. “We’ve seen that over and over again. Nobody gets pushed around like this is a herd and we’re just trying to get them through. Somebody really does pay attention to where their individual gifts and strengths are and how they can focus on that.”

Kathryn is now a junior and a member of FPD’s cheerleading squad, while Marshall is among the top students in his ninth grade class. They’ve since been joined at FPD by their twin brothers, first graders Joshua and Caleb.

And the Lyles family couldn’t be happier with their decision.

They are faithful donors to the Annual Fund because of one simple reason.

“We believe in what they’re doing,” Kristi said. “We see it beyond just our family. It does impact so beyond anything we can see.”

DON & JANET BLACKBURN

It’s widely known that First Presbyterian Day School exists for the purpose of “educating and equipping children to change the world for God’s glory.”

The school unashamedly displays this mission statement to represent its purpose and the values it hopes to help instill in its students.

What can’t be overlooked, though, is the influence the school can have on parents who decide to send their children to FPD.

Don and Janet Blackburn represent just one of many couples who have been forever impacted by the school.

Their three children, Lori, Donnie and Natalie, all graduated from FPD, along with two of their grandchildren, Rachel and Taylor Harden.

FPD has been a strong spiritual influence on not only their kids, but also on Don and Janet.

“(FPD) really helped me because it brought some guys into my life,” Don said. “I am still in a Bible study with those guys that I met and that had kids out at the school too.”

Janet also has seen a change in her life since the time her oldest daughter Lori started at FPD in the 1970s.

“Lori said she wanted to start going to First Presbyterian Church because her friends went

there,” she said. “So we started attending, and I actually was not a Christian at the time and became one in 1981.”

After that turning point in her life, the Blackburn family became even more involved with the school.

The Blackburns said it was very important to them for their kids to receive a quality education. FPD not only did that, but also taught them spiritually.

“It was great to see your kids respond not only to the classroom, but also to the spiritual influence that came from everybody,” Don said.

The Blackburns have been faithful donors to the school since the late 1970s and continue to give.

“It has been something that we really believed in and is another way of giving back for all it’s meant to our family,” Don said.

Janet agreed.“We appreciate the education that our children

and our grandchildren got and that it was biblically based,” she said. “I also love that they got a proper perspective on the world and life.”

DR. ARTHUR & ROSIE GRAY

First Presbyterian Day School was the only school Arthur and Rosie Gray considered for their four children.

Now, they’re looking forward to when they might have grandchildren follow in their parents’ footsteps.

From the beginning, it was the promise of an academically sound yet firmly Christian education that kept the Grays coming back.

“Being in a Christian school it was reinforcing whatever we did at home, no undermining of anything,” said Arthur, a local anesthesiologist. “It was one consistent message for the children as they were growing up.”

His wife agreed.“They were nurtured from 4K on up,” she said. She praised “the close-knit family atmosphere” of the school

and the sense of community it instilled. “Knowing what perspective the teachers were coming from”

was especially reassuring, she added.“I’ve always wanted to support whatever was going on,” she

said. And the Grays have. Even after their children have headed off to college and

beyond, the Grays continue to show up at football and basketball games and even a musical every now and then.

Whatever’s going on, they have faith in the future direction of the school.

“Having served and seeing the hard work that goes into running the school, none of the decisions were made lightly,” said Dr. Gray, a three-time board member. “I trust that they’re making the right decision. I’ve never had doubts about it.”

The Grays don’t just show their faith in the school verbally. They are also strong supporters of the annual fund.

“Tuition just doesn’t cover what’s required to have an excellent school,” Dr. Gray said. “To have good facilities, recruit good teachers and coaches, have a full range of programs … the money is well spent.”

“It’s not like giving to an organization where you don’t know where it’s going to go,” Rosie added. “You can drive by the campus and see.”

The school is a lot different now than it was back when the Grays were first considering area schools, but they are confident all of the changes have been improvements.

“We need the school,” Arthur said. “It offers something that’s a bit hard to describe. The academics are excellent, (and) that’s a result of the faculty.”

Having four FPD graduates in the family, including three who spent 14 years each as a Viking, the Grays have a unique insight into what makes FPD special.

It’s one of the many reasons they continue to support the school.

“To have one benefactor that can underwrite some huge amount just doesn’t come along often,” Arthur said. “It takes a lot of people giving money to take each step for the school to improve. I don’t know all the long-range plans for the school, but the board is good about looking ahead and planning for future generations.”

Under a Georgia state law established in 2008, you are now able to re-direct a portion of your state income tax payment to provide need-based tuition assistance.

FPD has partnered with the Georgia GOAL (Greater Opportunities for Access to Learning) Scholarship Program to help facilitate the provisions of the law.

This program allows us to provide need-based financial assistance to students who are cur-rently enrolled in a Georgia public school who desire a Christ-centered education at FPD.

The GOAL program has extended our capacity to help existing families with tuition assistance funded internally.

FPD continues to enjoy a sound financial posture as we enter the second decade of the 21st century.

In God’s providence and through his rich blessing, enrollment remains strong, stabilizing tuition revenue and enabling the forward progress of the special mission to educate and equip children to change the world for God’s glory.

Resources continue to be aggressively committed to areas that go to the heart of the school’s mission. Sixty five cents of every dollar are designated for FPD personnel, as it is the special faculty and staff of FPD who are ultimately called to impact the lives of our students. We are also mindful of the economic stresses on many of our families. Stewardship in spending and the use of assets remains a high priority to ensure that every resource used is mission appropriate, while we keep a visionary focus on long-term stability.

Attention to new mission-appropriate funding sources remains significant, offering immediate financial benefits and long-term viability. The FPD-GOAL program, for example, helps to educate children of eligible FPD families who demonstrate a financial need, with little or no expense to the school. The opening of the Downtown (Macon) campus lays the groundwork for even greater long-term stability and expands the FPD mission beyond the borders of Calvin Drive. Other initiatives, such as an international student program and distance learning, which are being assertively investigated today, offer additional innovative and cost-effective ways through which more children can be impacted.

Thank you for your investment in this special mission. God clearly remains at work at FPD. May He use your gift to educate and equip the students of today to be the world-changers of tomorrow.

Blessings, Charlie Parrish
