FPL is violating the law and putting South Florida at risk • Nuclear Reactors like Turkey Point need huge amounts of water to cool down their reactors. • The FPL nuclear plant at Turkey point draws water from Biscayne Bay and runs it through the Industrial Waste water facility or cooling canal system (IWCCS) to cool the reactors. • The water heats up and is circulated through the canal system • When the heated water in the cooling canal system evaporates (loosing upwards of 40 million gallons a day), all the salt gets left behind. • The highly concentrated salt water that’s left over seeps into our aquifer to the east and under Biscayne National Park. • This is in direct conflict with the goals of everglades restoration, endangers our aquifer by making water un safe to drink and harms species in Biscayne National Park. The Turkey Point Facility releases 600,000 lbs. of salt into our aquifer daily and exacerbates our problem of Salt Water Intrusion

FPL has a legal right to release salt: The company has permits allowing release of salt within the bound-ary of the cooling canal system only. The law prohib-its FPL from releasing salt outside of the facility.

Unfortunately, FPL is violating this permit. as well as both state and Federal law by releasing salt into the base of the aquifer toward Biscayne National Park and our water supply to the west.

FPL is endangering our aquifer and national parks by releasing dangerous levels of salt and other pollutants from the Turkey Point Power Plant.

This puts a great many South Florida communities at risk. Without proper Abatement and Clean up through Remediation, South Dade county generally and all of Monroe County, Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park are in danger of damage from salt water intrusion.

The communities most threatened by this process are: Cutler Bay, Florida City, Homestead, Ocean Reef, and Key Largo.

3. MITIGATE

1. ABATE

2. REMEDIATE

Adopt alternate cooling methods

Stop the salt loading

Clean up the areas already impacted
