4th SUNDAY OF ADVENT

ECHOING MARY'S

DECISION

The angel Gabriel today c o n f r o n t s Mary with a mystery. The mystery of salvation in Christ is not a mystery t h a t i s solved, but a reality beyond our comprehension that we must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter into the mystery: God waits, Adam and Eve and all the souls of the dead who long for paradise wait, angels wait for new heavenly companions. And there is much rejoicing when her decision is "yes."

We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but the mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no means "solved." We may understand it a bit better due to Mary's "yes." We may be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But it still remains a mystery to which we all must give our own "yes." Soon we will be singing "O come, let us adore him." May our Advent prayer, our echo of Mary's "yes," continue then, so we may enter into the mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ, God among us. CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART Christmas! 'Tis the season for kindling the fire of

hospitality in the hall, the genial fire of charity in the heart.

--Washington Irving

Pray for our sick: Mateus Ribeiro, Domenica Dinaro, Pete Giannantonio, Anne Ring, Lorenzo Cafasso, Josephine Dolberry, Eileen Murphy and Mercedes Schindler.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME & TALENT

We are thankful to the our CCD parents who have supported our Religious Education Program by

bringing their children to church on Sundays and attending mass together as family. And to our Catechists who dedicate their Time & Talent

instructing our children in God’s ways.

We pray that the Lord will continue to bless their lives with good health, peace and love, and keep in their hearts the desire to serve Him and His church

even more everyday.

Merry Christmas!!

NEW SHOES — Little girls love to totter about in their mothers’ shoes, pretending to be grown-up. One day they will be ready to wear adult shoes for real. Shoes come in many different sizes. Hand-made shoes are crafted for a particular individual, and that’s how God prepares work for us in the church - work that fits us perfectly as we grow.

Take a moment this Advent season to consider how well your spiritual shoes fit you. You may be satis-fied with your current role. But could it be time to slip on a larger pair of shoes? When shoes start to pinch at the toes, we buy our child a new pair. Perhaps you have grown in your experience and now it is time to shoulder more responsibility. God is maturing you so that your skills may bless more people. Like new shoe leather, you may need “breaking in” to your new position. It might feel a stretch as you learn to adapt to be-come more fruitful, but you know that, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. ” (Philippians 4.13)

Growing up in Christ means bravely stepping out to share more of what God has given to us with others

The number one way to keep Jesus Christ in your Christmas celebrations is to have him present in your daily life. Keeping Christ in Christmas is more about the way you live your life than the things you say—such as "Merry Christmas" versus "Happy Holi-days." Keeping Christ in Christmas means daily reveal-ing the character, love and spirit of Christ that dwells in you, by allowing these traits to shine through your actions. Here are simple ways to keep Christ the cen-tral focus of your life this Christmas season: 1) Give God one very special gift just from you to him Let this gift be some-thing personal that no one else needs to know about, and let it be a sac-rifice. David said in 2 Samuel 24 that he would not offer a sacrifice to God that cost him noth-ing. Maybe your gift to God will be to forgive someone you've needed to forgive for a long time. You may discover that you've given a gift back to yourself. Per-haps your gift will be to commit to spending time with God daily. Or maybe there is something God has asked you to give up. Make this your most important gift of the season. 2) Set aside a special time to read the Christmas story in St. Luke 1:5-56 through 2:1-20 Consider reading this account with your family and discussing it together. 3) Set up a Nativity scene in your home It is beautiful to have a scenery that depicts the mo-ment of our Lord’s birth. Ask the children to help with new ideas. 4) Plan a project of good will this Christmas Do you have an elderly neighbor in need of home re-pairs or yard work? Find someone with a genuine need, involve your whole family and see how happy you can make someone this Christmas. 5) Take a group Christmas caroling in a nursing home or a children's hospital One year the staff at the office where I worked decided to incorporate Christmas caroling at a nearby nursing home into our yearly staff Christmas party plans. We

all met first at the nursing home and toured the facility while singing Christmas carols. Afterwards, we headed back to our party with our hearts full of tenderness. It was the best staff Christmas party we'd ever had. 6) Give a surprise gift of service to each member of your family Jesus taught us to serve by washing the disciples feet. He also taught us that it is "more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35 - The idea of giving an unexpected gift of service to members of your family is to demon-strate Christ-like love and service. You might consider giving a back rub to your spouse, running an errand for your brother, or cleaning out a closet for your mother. Make it personal and meaningful and watch the blessings multiply.

7) Set aside a time of family devotions on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning Before opening the gifts, take a few minutes to gather together as a family in prayer and devotions. Read a few Bible verses and discuss as a family the true meaning of Christmas.

8) Attend Mass together with your family If you are alone this Christmas or don't have family living near you, invite a friend or a neighbor to join you. 9) Send Christmas cards that convey a spiritual message This is an easy way to share your faith at Christmas-time. If you've already bought the reindeer cards—no problem! Just write include a personal religious message with each card. 10) Write a Christmas letter to a religious person, a priest or nun: Receiving a letter always fells like opening a priceless gift on Christmas morning, no matter what day it is. Many of them are unable to travel home for the holi-days, so it can be a very lonely time for them. Write a special Christmas letter to religious person of your choice, thanking him or her for giving their life in service to the Lord. Trust me—it will mean more than you can imagine!
