So what is liquid air?

LIQUID AIRLiquid air is air which has been cooled to an extremely low temperature (-200 degree Celsius) It condenses as it cools down to make a pale blue mobile liquid

It HAS to be kept in an vacuum insulated flask because it’s a very good absorber of heat energy. They can turn back to gaseous state very quickly.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LIQUEFY THE AIR?

Here’s what happens when we liquefy the air:-Firstly water vapor condenses, which is removed by the absorbent filters. Next, Carbon dioxide freezes at -79 degree Celsius, and is also removed. Then Oxygen turns into liquid at -183 degree Celsius. Lastly, Nitrogen turns into liquid at -193 degree Celsius.

FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION OF LIQUID AIR

The liquefied air is then passed into the fractionating column. It is warmer at the bottom than it is at the top. The temperature at the top is -190 degree Celsius and -185 at the bottom.

The liquefied air is entered at -200 degree Celsius at the bottom of the fractionating column. The oxygen get collected at the bottom because its denser and is in liquid form, whereas nitrogen is collected at the top because it less dense and is collected in gaseous state.

Nitrogen is collected in gaseous state and oxygen in liquid state.
