HOW MUCH WILL YOU EAT?

hrough the investigations in this stand alone unit in Math, you will be exploring

and developing your understanding of the following concepts:

• Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

• For fractional and decimal computation, the ideas developed for whole-number computation can apply.

After the pre-assessment, we will have whole class lessons depending on the needs of the class. The remainder of the time will be devoted to guided practice groups and Math Menu time.

GUIDELINES

•Read the descriptions of the activities before you select.

•Once you choose an activity, you must try to complete it.

•You do not need to complete all of the menu options.

•You must stay on task and allow others to complete their work.

When you complete your activities, you may the challenge project or go to Mathletics.

Go to the KidsOLR menu and click on ‘improper and mixed numbers’. Read through the information and play the examples. Make a poster that defines and explains this concept. Remember elements of design?

Listen to the Fraction song. Write your own song to describe and explain mixed numbers & improper fractions. (Click here to review concept)

Play The Ice Cream Shop game. How much money did you earn? Make a set of manipulatives that would help you or a friend fill the orders more quickly. Score 8

Go to the Math is Fun site and read the information. Practice with the links on this page and then complete questions 1-5 in your notebook. Be sure to write the title and the date.

Watch the movie, Reducing Fractions on BrainPop (you must log in first!). Explain how to simplify fractions, using at least 3 examples. Record your explanation and post it on your blog.

Play “Three in a Row” with a partner. See teacher for the game board & instructions. When finished, write an explanation to “teach someone how to reduce fractions using your own examples” in your Math Journal. (How to reduce fractions)

Review the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages at BBC’s Bitesize. When you are done, complete the online test in your notebook. Record the questions and put your answers. Correct your work when done.

Watch the video, Fractions, Decimals and Percents. You will need your whiteboard to complete an activity while you watch. Select a real life example and explain it to a friend and record it for your blog. Make it interesting!

Explore the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages using this tool. Use the questions in the Exploration section as a guide. Show what you have learned to a friend (record)

Make a poster to illustrate how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with unlike denominators. You may make four separate posters if you would prefer. Review the steps here - add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Remember the elements and principles of design!

Record a song or poem describing the steps to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with unlike denominators. You may create four separate songs/poems if you want. Review the steps here - add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Record yourself and post on your blog!

Watch this video on paper folding to show multiplication. Try this with another pair of fractions. How might this work for other operations? Make your own tutorial video to illustrate. Record and post on your blog.
