PEOPLE with Fragile X syndrome don’tlike breaking their routine and theirhypersensitivity means noises areamplified by 10 times to their ears.
This raisesthe questionas towhy Katend Will Spicer decided to take Tom, theiragile X brother, on an American road-trip toeet Lars Ulrich, the drummer of heavy metal
and Metallica. But this is exactly what theyd.
The family documented the trip in the filmission To Lars .
In an attempt to reconnect with Tom, his
der sister Kate, a journalist from London, ecided she would take her brother to meets rock star hero.
“One thing he always said is he wanted wasmeet Lars Ulrich from Metallica,” Kate said.
“One day, I just said ‘OK let’s do it’, partly tout him up, and partly because I thought, ‘if
that was Will asking me I would think, oh, hereally wanted to meet this person’.”
The youngest of the siblings, Will is a film-maker so the pair decided to make adocumentary about their journey.
Kate said since the movie’s release in June2012 there has been a lot of positive talk aboutpeople with disabilities.
“People relate to Tom and they really like
him,” Kate said.
“We just wanted people to just see throughthe label to the man. We’ve humanisedlearning disabled people.”
