General Information Credit: 4 Teaching Hours: 60 Time: 2 hours/day, Mon-Fri Faculty Information Professor: Dr. Ellen Zimmerman email: [email protected] Course Description This course is an exploration of how culture influences us to believe, think, and act. The course presents cross-cultural perspectives on aspects of human life, which may include how we get the things we need to survive, what sort of family life is desirable, and how we govern ourselves and maintain social order. Both Western and non-Western ideas and practices are explored. Students are introduced to the methods used by anthropologists in the study of culture. Course Learning Objectives ◦Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cultures other than their own, including western and nonwestern cultures. ◦Students will be able to define and articulate the importance of major concepts and principles in the discipline, such as ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, and the integrated nature of culture. ◦Students will demonstrate an understanding of the various research techniques in anthropology and be able to articulate the appropriateness of each to the particular circumstances and objectives of the research. Required Text Miller, Barbara. 2013. Cultural Anthropology (7th Edition), Pearson. Additional required readings will be available as handouts or as links to online sources.

Course Requirements Quizzes 25% of grade Assignments 25% of grade Midterm Exam 25% of grade Final Exam 25% of grade In order for you to pass this course, you must complete all quizzes, assignments, and exams. There will be a short quiz (10 multiple choice or true/false questions) on each of the Miller chapters sat the beginning of the week for which that chapter is assigned. Assignments will require you to read a particular article and write responses to questions about it. Participation in class discussion of the assignment will constitute a component of your grade on it. The rest of the grade will be based on the depth of thought and critical thinking that is evident in your response as well as the effectiveness of your written communication. The tests will consist of multiple choice and true/false questions on the content of the readings and an essay question that asks you to apply the information and knowledge you have acquired through the readings and discussions. In the essays, students are asked to demonstrate an understanding of the material. This course is not organized solely around lectures. It also involves considerable discussion of articles, case studies, and videos that illustrate the basic concepts and approaches involved in the study of culture. Participation by students in both written and oral discussion of these materials is important to understanding them fully.
