ANSBACH, Germany -- Oct. 8-12 is National Fire Prevention week. Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred Oct. 8-9, 1871.

The two-day blaze killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 more homeless and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings. The tragedy inspired reform across America, spurring new fire safety codes and public awareness campaigns. This year’s theme focuses on home fire escape planning and having two ways out of every room.

“If the first way is blocked, it is important to have a backup escape route to help make sure everyone gets out safely,” said U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Fire Services representative Sabine Searles. “Most people assume they have more time to escape than they actually do.”

Fire can spread rapidly through your home, engulfing it in smoke and flames and making escape nearly impossible in as little as two minutes.

“Plan ahead,” Searles said. “Make your home escape ready, so your family can leave quickly and safely if fire strikes and make fire safety part of your everyday activities. Be sure to know your local emergency phone numbers.”

Some of the USAG Ansbach Fire Prevention Week activities include visits to the child care centers and teaching the little ones to have two ways out.

This week there will be an information booth and static display at the Urlas Exchange and the Storck Barrack Exchange. These displays are designed to educate the community on the Have Two Ways Out theme.

USAG Ansbach Fire Services also will be conducting various fire evacuation drills at

different facilities where they will block primary escape routes in order to practice the two ways out plan.

Some additional important fire safety tips include: • Keep smoke alarms in good working order.

Test the detectors every month and replace the battery once a year.

• Create your home fire escape plan. Have two ways out and practice your plan twice a year.

BAMBERG, Germany -- This October National Breast Cancer awareness month marks 28 years of an awareness campaign designed to educate people about the disease and empower people to find a cure.

Many people know someone – a mother, daughter, wife, sister, aunt, niece, or a friend – who has been affected by this horrific disease.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women and is the second largest cause of death due to cancer in American women.

As women, we face many concerns that require us to have a heightened awareness of our health.

During October, this is especially true for breast care as we observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to breastcancer.org, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

Although females are the primary victims, this disease also affects men.

According to breastcancer.org statistics, nearly 1 percent of all new cases occur in men.

The most important thing to know about breast cancer is that even though it cannot be

prevented, if found early, it is survivable.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2011 there were approximately 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women.

According to the American Cancer society, women should perform monthly breast self-exams starting in their 20s, to detect any lumps or differences in breast tissue.

They should also check themselves in a mirror to see if they see any changes in breast appearance.

A health care provider should perform a clinical breast exam every one to three years.

If you notice a change in your breasts or you feel a lump that is different from when you performed your last exam, see a health care provider.

After 50, women should have an annual mammogram.

One of the most emphasized tips is prevention. Early detection can help save lives.

Risk factors for breast cancer include:

• You are 40 or older• You or other family members have a gene

mutation that carries high breast cancer risk, such as BRCA

• You or your family have a history of breast cancer

• You had your first child after you were 30

or have no children• You began

m e n s t r u a t i n g before you were 12 or you went through menopause after you were 55

• You have been on hormone replacement therapy

• You drink two or more alcoholic drinks per day

• After menopause you gain weight – especially around your waist

There are things that you can do to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer; which include exercising regularly, attaining a healthy weight and reducing the amount of alcoholic beverages consumed to less than one a day.

If you think you may be at high risk for breast cancer, talk with your doctor about genetic counseling or about medications that might reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.

If you have any previous mammograms from the states, we recommend you send for them and have them available for your mammogram appointment.

For more information on breast cancer, visit www.cancer.org.

To schedule a clinical breast exam or mammogram, please contact your local health clinic.

A message from the Schweinfurt Health Care TeamDear Schweinfurt Community,

The Schweinfurt Health Clinic is implementing the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) concept of care and we intend to meet the community health needs by allowing enrolled beneficiaries to access their health care team by telephone and through the new secure email messaging system.

The secure messaging system being rolled out will soon allow you to receive lab results, request appointments and receive private medical information securely without violating any privacy regulations. But you’ll need an account. We can help. Just ask about the new concept at the clinic.

Once your account is created, you will be able to call the clinic for an appointment and, if your primary care manager is booked, then you can request a telephone consult, or T-con, to be placed alerting your team.

Once the registered nurse team receives the note, then they can return your call without you ever leaving home.

We can support medication refills and answer

questions about referrals or offer advice over the telephone without requiring significant amounts of your personal time.

We are trying to reduce time sitting in the waiting room exposing your family and other families to the illnesses expected during the upcoming cold and flu season. If the RN determines that you need an acute appointment then they will facilitate an appointment with your PCM.

Procedures and pregnancy referrals will still be handled directly with the nursing staff. Please inquire at the front desk.

Many people registered during the Save a Life Tour on Ledward Barracks on Sept. 25. Meanwhile, we continue to expand our services as we learn to utilize the system as well.

Please stop by the clinic to request an application. We’ll answer any questions and help build your account.

Thank you for moving forward with us while we implement this new concept of care.

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- Community members, Soldiers, family members and friends in the Schweinfurt community placed more than 3,700 votes and determined that Michael Mehrhoff’s photo of a derelict hotel in Braunlage, Germany, was “Picture Perfect.”

Schweinfurt’s Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation had 43 participants in the Picture Perfect photo contest where the contestants submitted photos from their European travels.

Representing 13 different countries, these photos took viewers to European travel destinations like the always picturesque Alps in southern Germany, the Cinque Terre region in Italy and to the shores of Mediterranean getaways like Paphos, Cyprus.

Participants also submitted pictures that captured special moments like a wedding proposal in Paris, a father and son running along a medieval wall in Rothenburg o.b.T, a family portrait on a beach in Normandy and the fading sun setting on the shores of Cavtat, Croatia.

As the first place winner, Mehrhoff’s photo has been displayed throughout the garrison on electronic marquees, TeamSchweinfurt.com and on the garrison Facebook page.

He also received a Family and MWR cooler and canvas tote, a gift certificate for the Army and Air Force Exchange Services Concessionaire Day Spa and a free coffee and pastry from Cafe Rohr.

The first runner-up, Cody Brown, received 670 votes or “likes” for his unique picture of a double rainbow with the Alps in the background when he stayed at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Brown received a cooler and a canvas tote from Family and MWR, a $10 gift card to AAFES, two free bowling game passes and a free soft drink and slice of pizza from Jenny’s Snack Bar.

Ashley Asher was the second runner-up with 291 votes. Asher showcased the beauty of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area in Germany,

with her photo of lush, green fields with rustic farm houses in the foreground as the majestic Alps pose as the backdrop. The second runner-up was awarded with the Family MWR cooler and canvas tote, two free bowling game passes and a free soft drink and slice of pizza from Jenny’s Snack Bar.

We would like to thank all of our participants for sharing their photos with the community and to all of the members of the community who voted for their favorite photo.

We would like to encourage everyone to partake in the next photo contest. Detailed information will be announced later on this year.

BAMBERG, Germany -- Prevention and intervention are key to ending domestic violence.

In order to prevent domestic violence, knowledge and awareness of what is considered domestic violence is important. Domestic violence includes sexual assault, minor to major physical injury and emotional abuse.

That is why October is Domestic Violence Awareness month in the military.

A proclamation letter signed on Oct. 2 by U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg Commander, Lt. Col. Michelle L. Bienias, states, “The message to everyone in the Bamberg community is: Don’t turn your back on domestic violence!”

This statement re-emphasizes the national theme for this year’s Domestic Violence Awareness month.

The proclamation points out three P’s to help stop domestic violence, they are:• Prepare – by recognizing and solving problems early• Prevent – by reducing risks and seeking help• Protect – by taking personal responsibility and reporting abuse

There has been an upward trend in the Army of cases of domestic abuse, and to help stop this everyone needs to be aware and take action to change the trend.

The Family Advocacy Program at USAG Bamberg will have an information booth set up in the lobby of the Commissary on Oct. 12, 19 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

At the information booth, community members will receive information they can take with them on domestic violence.

There will be pamphlets available along with tubes of lipstick containing a personal safety plan and local resource information they can carry with them at all times.

Throughout the year FAP is dedicated to help victims of domestic violence.

However, more important is to prevent it all together, and FAP fulfills this mission through a variety of methods including classes, counseling and intervention services.

A victim advocate is available 24/7 to support anyone that is subject to domestic violence, but if someone is in immediate danger they should call the Military Police. When reporting domestic violence there are two ways to report it, restricted and unrestricted.

A restricted report can only be made to a military health care provider, a chaplain, a behavioral health care provider, the victim advocate coordinator or the FAP manager.

When making a restricted report, command or law enforcement will not be notified of the incident. The victim will be offered all services available to help them out including medical attention, counseling and legal aid.

An unrestricted report is a report made to anyone else and command and/or law enforcement will be notified. A restricted report can be made unrestricted at a later time if one wishes.

For more information contact the Family Advocacy Program in your community.

“The root of a lot of family issues is tied straight to financial issues” he said.

Without a full-time employee working in Financial Readiness, the services have been reduced to one day a week.

Employees from U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach’s ACS will staff Bamberg’s Financial Readiness office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Bonilla said walk-ins are accepted, but it is best to make an appointment by calling ACS at 0951-300-7777 during those hours.

Bonilla said he hopes that Financial Readiness assistance can be provided at additional times in the future.

“Efforts are being made to expand those hours,” he said.

EFMP

Personnel will be available to provide EFMP services Monday through Friday from 1-4:30 p.m.

Mobilization and Deployment

Bonilla said ACS will continue to provide Family Readiness Group and Rear Detachment Support offered through the Mobilization and Deployment program.

Bonilla said Bamberg’s ACS will be able to provide some of the Mobilization and Deployment services needed but also will have to rely on support from garrisons within the

Franconia Military Community. “There are times when that program can be manned with two to three people,” he said. “One person has been doing it, but that person is leaving.”

Bonilla said he is currently looking at solutions to bring the services back up to full scale.

No changes currently planned for Schweinfurt ACS Although USAG Schweinfurt is also preparing for closure, its ACS has not had to make any changes so far, said Patricia Lamson, division chief of Schweinfurt’s ACS.

“At this time our hours of operation and services are remaining stable,” Lamson said.

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- Two students from the high school here will make their second trip to an annual visual performing arts symposium organized by the Department of Defense Dependents Schools.

Dallas Vermillion and Noel Lipki, seniors attending Schweinfurt High School, are going again to the Creative Connections workshop from Nov. 4-9 at the Jugendgästehaus in Oberwesel.

While this marks Noel’s second year representing the strings department, Dallas is going on to represent the spherical thinking category. Last year, she represented the art department.

Creative Connections is a six-day event for 150 hand-selected, motivated and talented high school students.

The objective of the activity is to provide students with advanced instruction in fine arts. Classes are offered in drama, show choir, strings, percussion, creative movement/dance, drawing, mixed media, watercolor, oil pastels, video product and spherical thinking.

Spherical Thinking is painting in nine different perspectives.

“We are fortunate to have two students at our high school get in,” said Eric Measells, music teacher at Schweinfurt High School.

More than 400 students apply from DODDS high schools, and only 150 get in. Students must write an application, show a sample of their work and have to have a teacher recommendation.

“I’m going for drawing but in a new way…I’m really excited to learn a new perspective of drawing,” Dallas said.

“She is an exacting artist seeking perfection in all that she does,” said Dallas’ art teacher, Lysti Cannon.

“I have got my music and I’ve already looked at it. I am really excited,” Noel, a cellist, said.

“Noel exceeds all the requirements,” Measells said.

The activity culminates with an exhibition of artwork followed by stage performances on Thursday evening, Nov. 8, beginning at 5 p.m., according to the Department of Defense Education Activity website. The exhibit and show are open to the public.

“This is a mixture of talents in one building being creative,” said Measells. “It is like a spider web being made with the arts coming together that is how they are connected. Hence, creative connections.”

By Sarah Equils, Bamberg Spouses and Civilians’ Club president

BAMBERG, Germany -- The Bamberg Spouses and Civilians’ Club is an organization all about community service.

The BSCC supports the Bamberg community by providing grants, donations and scholarships throughout the year.

This October, however, the BSCC is doing something a little more extraordinary.

On Oct. 20, at the Warner Conference Center, the BSCC is hosting a spectacular event – Warner Barracks’ first ever Bra-Auction.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour, light snacks and a live auction starting at 7 p.m.

The Bra-Auction is designed to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, although this event is not sponsored by the foundation.

Individuals, groups and organizations are asked to decorate a woman’s bra to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

“Everyone is affected by breast cancer,” said Saree Allison-Clopper, the BSCC’s activities chair. “We all know someone who has it, has been recently diagnosed or has survived breast cancer.”

“I got the idea from a good friend who participated in a walk-a-thon where her team decorated bras and wore them over their clothing for the entire event,” Allison-Clopper said.

Tenant units, on-post organizations, Family Readiness Groups and individuals have all been invited to decorate a bra for this event.

Themes are dictated by each group and there are no limitations on how creative the entries can be.

The deadline to design a bra is Oct. 12.

Decorating a bra is not the only way to take part in the Bra-Auction.

There are lots of ways to participate:

• Make a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

• Purchase from our local crafters at the event.

• Encourage attendance and participation at the auction.

• Come and bid on a bra.

In addition to the auction, the BSCC has invited the Bamberg Health Clinic to host a booth educating women about breast cancer detection and prevention.

The clinic also will help attendees make mammogram appointments at the local klinikum.

“I am blessed to be a board member of the BSCC and even more blessed to work with such talented women for this event,” Allison-Clopper said.

“I am hoping the Bra-Auction will be wildly successful,” she said.

For more information about the Bra-Auction or to donate a bra, send an email to Saree Allison-Clopper at [email protected].

October is National Depression Awareness Month which helps educate people about the various signs and symptoms of depression and the availability of free anonymous behavioral health screenings. The Army theme for 2012 is Redefining Strength -- Get Screened, Seek Care. Symptoms of depression include persistent sadness/anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, helplessness, difficulty concentrating, alcohol or substance abuse and more.

Clinical depression is a serious medical condition that if left untreated, may lead to other medical conditions. A depression screening is often the first step towards getting well. Unfortunately, two-thirds of people who suffer from depression fail to seek care. They mistakenly believe their symptoms are just a normal part of life. The good news for those who suffer with depression is that clinical depression can be treated. Treatments may include psychotherapy, medications or a combination of both.

The Army is committed to decreasing stigma for Soldiers, family members and Army civilians who seek behavioral health care. Even the most severe cases of depression are treatable. The earlier the treatment begins, the more effective it is and the greater the likelihood the recurrence of depression can be prevented.

If you or someone you know suffers from depression, help is available. Individuals suffering with depression are urged to contact their primary care physician or a behavioral health professional to get the needed care. Anonymous depression screenings are available through the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, behavioral health agencies and resources in local communities.

The Army encourages commanders and leaders to coordinate events locally with military and civilian health care professionals to get the word

out to Soldiers, family members and Army civilians that depression is treatable and of the opportunities to be screened and referred for treatment by a primary care or behavioral health professional.

The 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) mandated enhanced behavioral health screening of deploying Service Members. The Army is implementing these requirements through all phases of the deployment cycle as well as exceeding the mandated screening by establishing annual screening for all Soldiers, regardless of deployment status, through existing Periodic Health Assessments.
