ANSBACH, Germany -- Soldiers and family members of U.S. Army Europe’s 12th Combat Aviation Brigade joined their col-leagues, friends and other well-wishers for a colors casing cere-mony at Katterbach Army Airfield here April 20 to recognize and formally farewell CAB Soldiers as they prepare to deploy to com-bat.

USAREUR Soldier of the

Week - Highlighted by

CSM David Davenport

Name: Spc. Steven Miller Unit: Bravo Company “Big Windy,” 5-158th Aviation Regi-ment, Ansbach, Germany. Job Title: CH-47F Crew Chief Who is Spc. Miller: Spc. Miller is a native Davidsonville, Maryland. Spc Miller enjoys auto mechanics. He spends his personal time learning the specifics of all types of American and imported cars. His true pas-sion is music and he is now taking on the challenge of learning to play the piano. Why he is the USAEUR Soldier of the Week: Spc. Miller is a Soldier who can al-ways be counted on to execute and accom-plish all missions and tasks delegated to him. He provides guidance and direction to all of the Soldiers under his charge. Spc. Miller can always be counted on and re-

mains one of the most dependable, reliable junior NCOs within the platoon and com-pany. During the 5/158 Aviation Regiment’s last Ariel Gunnery, Spc. Miller was the first Sol-dier to take charge and ensure the aircraft selected to perform the training was 100 percent fully mission-capable and that all required equipment (gun mounts) were serviceable and operational. In addition, as the company armorer, Spc. Miller worked relentlessly overseeing the PMI, functional-ity of weapons and initial issue to crews. During the Arial Gunnery, he took it upon himself to explain and train the younger, less experienced Door Gunners on basic weapon fundamentals, how to properly employ weapons systems and engage tar-gets while emphasizing on being observant to ammunition conservation. Upon completion of Gunnery, Spc. Miller worked endlessly by supervising 100 per-cent accountability of weapons turn-in, complete cleaning, maintenance, reset and gauging, a truly impressive display of con-duct for a young specialist and just one fine snapshot of his loyalty and dedication.

Spc. Miller exemplifies and lives by the Army Values and “Be, Know, Do” sentiment and continuously displays and applies these principles daily both on and off duty.

The Patriot Express is a Department of Defense-chartered air travel transiting between Baltimore/Washington International Airport and Ramstein Air Base.

Starting Feb. 6, all Department of the Army personnel and family members incoming to U.S. Army in Europe on permanent change of station orders with assignments in Germany will use the flights from BWI as the first option of travel.

Returning personnel stationed in Germany and PCSing to the continental U.S. may also use the flights to BWI as their primary air transportation method. The Army also considers PE flights as a viable transportation method for travelers from Germany on temporary duty orders to the Baltimore/D.C. area.

Reception operations at RAB are fully established and will make travel more convenient for patrons. Because operations are moving to Ramstein, USAREUR will no longer need to fund office space for reception operations at Frankfurt International Airport.

Benefits

The flights are expected to enhance the international travel experience for Army personnel and their families.

Higher luggage weight allowance (70 lbs. per piece instead of 50 lbs.)

Significant savings on pet travel costs (approximately $110 per pet, two pet limit)

U.S. forces veterinarian reviews documents to clear pets to enter Germany

Goal is all new U.S. Army in Europe employees to spend their first night in Germany in their new community

May Day in Germany The night before May Day, many local communities organize a dance, “Tanz in den Mai,” to celebrate the beginning of the warmer season. This night is also known in some regions as Walpurgisnacht, the night the witches fly across the Brocken hill (www.brocken-harz.de) on their brooms; sometimes the teens of a village will play pranks on their neighbors. Another old tradition is the Maisprung; a fire is built and at midnight the participants jump over the fire, literally “jumping into May.” May 1, the International Labor Day, is also a German national holiday. In the bigger cities it is traditionally used by unions and political organi-zations as a rally day. Many people also enjoy a long hike or bicycle ride through the rolling hills and forests of their region, after which they find rest and nourishment in an outdoor restaurant. The more rural regions celebrate the first day of May by putting up a “Maibaum,” a Maypole. It is a tall wooden pole made from a tree trunk (pine or birch), adorned with colorful ribbons, flowers, carved figures, and various other decorations, depending on the area. In former times it was cut fresh during Walpurgisnacht; nowadays the tree is cut ear-lier, so it can be cleaned up and decorated. The young men of a neighboring village may try to steal the tree, which is also part of tradi-tion; therefore the tree has to be closely guarded. If a tree has been successfully stolen (specific rules of non-violence and sneakiness ap-ply), the original owners can buy it back with a lot of beer and a Brotzeit (a light meal), which is usually consumed by both parties to-gether. On Mayday, the community comes together to celebrate and dance around the Maypole.

Story by John O’Brien

In recent weeks, the Ansbach Garrison has been the scene of vandalism

and property destruction in our public areas. The Storck Rocket Park Play-

ground and Bleidorn AAFES vending machines near the skate park are

just a couple of examples. In these cases, the Military Police were notified

and the responsible parties were apprehended and adjudicated.

What does this mean? It means we get area beautification workers for the

community. Yes, that’s right, when you get caught doing the crime then

among other potential negative administrative sanctions which could be

levied against you or your family, you will also be required to spend several

hours working with the Area Support Team, all the while contemplating

your actions. And don’t forget about the embarrassment you may cause

your family or sponsoring unit. Vandalism costs the Garrison money. In

the case of the Storck and Bleidorn vandalism incidents, about $7,500 that

could have been spent on improvements elsewhere, must be used to re-

pair criminal activity. Please help to stop vandalism and property damage

in our community. When you see it, report it to the Military Police immedi-

ately and don’t assume someone else will report it. It takes a community

effort to ensure we spend our limited resources on improvements, not

criminal activity.

Do the Crime, Do the Time

SCWEINFURT, Germany – One of Schweinfurt’s community theater actresses was recently awarded for her role while 17 oth-ers were recognized April 21 in Heidelberg for their production achievements at an annual award ceremony for theaters of U.S. Army installations in Europe. Cris Isom was awarded the best supporting actress in a musical for her role as Jan in the production of Grease at the annual Tour-nament of Plays “Topper” Awards Show. Isom has volunteered her talents on and behind the stage in many theater productions over the past two years. Her son, Caleb Isom, and husband, Sgt. 1st Class Scott Isom, were also nominated for awards, making the “Topper” Awards ceremony a family affair. The Isoms and other members of the production of Grease were nominated, but not awarded, in 14 categories. For the majority of the production members it was their first at the ceremony. “The event inspired those who worked in the production to give it their all next year,” said Stephen Connolly, garrison MWR enter-tainment coordinator. The Toppers, which are sponsored by Installation Management Command – Europe, recognizes technical musical, acting, artistic and directing achievements of U.S. Army garrison theaters throughout Europe. The Topper Awards show will be televised on AFN Europe to

showcase the talents of the top IMCOM theater productions dur-ing a special airing of the event on the Pentagon Channel at 7 p.m. on May 5 and 12. This is the first time in the 17 years that AFN has televised Topper Awards show. “We feel it’s going to be a fun show,” said AFN Europe Com-mander Bill Bigelow. “You’ll see parts of some of the best theater in Europe, as well as the actual award presentations.” The show will also be on AFN Europe’s Youtube channel May 6. Story by Margaret Gotheridge SCHWEINFURT, Germany – To celebrate Soldiers, family mem-bers and those in the community who support them, the garrison invites you to the Schweinfurt Community Celebration May 11 from 4 – 10 p.m. at the Conn Club. The event’s guest of honor will be you, the Schweinfurt commu-nity. The event brings in a multitude of events and activities providing opportunities to build camaraderie among members of the com-munity. “The celebration will be an event that brings everyone together. It is an occasion to connect with someone else in the community,” said Garrison Commander, Lt. Col. Michael Runey. The Schweinfurt military community is made up of roughly 11,000 people to include Soldiers, DOD employees and their family mem-bers. Soldiers make up about 36 percent of the community.

“The purpose of the community event is to build community rela-tions with each other. Many members of the community, including myself are not familiar with the particulars of each unit and the functions they carry out on a daily basis,” said event organizer, Capt. Jason Feldt. The community celebration merges the more formal annual garri-son ball with the summertime organization day typically geared toward employees and their families, said Feldt. Units, teams and organizations are encouraged to set up displays showcasing their attributes to the community that distinguish them from others. The organizations are encouraged to wear their team or unit colors or don articles of clothing that set them apart. A more formal portion of the event is scheduled for the first hour of the event including opening remarks by Lt. Col. Runey, video presentations by various tenant units and performances by the high school drill team and the middle school choir.

Story by Margaret Ballinger SCHWEINFURT, Germany—The dress code for the Schweinfurt Elementary/Middle School 2012-2013 school year has been ex-panded to reflect a more robust selection of clothes making it easier on both parent and student. Students will now be allowed to wear denim jeans. Additionally, they can now wear any solid colored-shirt or solid-colored pair of pants. In years past, students were not allowed to wear jeans. They were also mandated to wear specific colored shirts and pants. “The big thing is that jeans will be allowed, as long as there are no holes, no frays, no slits. Just plain jeans that look nice,” said Phyllis Fuglaar, middle school principal. She and Dr. William Hill, the elementary school principal, made the official announcement April 17 at an FRG Leaders meeting at the Yellow Ribbon Room. “We have made it more parent-friendly and more student-friendly with the colors,” said Hill. “They can wear any solid colors they want to wear. The bottom line is that we want to make it easier on the parent.” Students must not wear clothes with embroidered logos, Fuglaar said. The decision to change the dress code was the result of a com-munity effort that drew voices from students, parents and faculty. The dress code concern was brought forward to the School Advi-

sory Committee. Eight members — including parents and SEMS staff — making up the School Advisory Committee drafted a sur-vey which was submitted to community members. The SAC then crafted a policy based on the results of that survey. The new dress code goes into effect Aug. 27, the first day of school. Administration is working with AAFES officials to ensure the Main Exchange at Ledward Barracks has in stock clothes that meet the SEMS dress policy, Hill said. To see the SEMS new dress policy, visit the SEMS website.
