SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- It’s been a busy summer for the Soldiers and Families of the 18th Engineer Brigade.

In June, the brigade returned from a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan, gained a new commanding officer in Col. Scott A. Petersen on July 27, and, in duel ceremonies Aug. 2, the brigade headquarters uncased its colors on Conn Barracks and held an assumption of responsibility ceremony to welcome the brigade’s Command Sgt. Maj. Lauro F. Obeada.

“Just in case painting all the bollards around our headquarters here engineer red wasn’t enough to let you know that we are in town, we thought that we would have a ceremony as well,” said Petersen, referencing the fresh coats of engineer red on their new headquarters building.

Uncasing its colors in Schweinfurt, the brigade officially marks its new home there, though its headquarters staff have been in the process of relocating from Schwetzingen, Germany, over the last few months.

As the 18th Engineer Brigade welcomed Obeada they also bid farewell to Sgt. Major David G. Crews who was acting as the interim command sergeant major the last few weeks.

“As the interim command sergeant major my role over the past few weeks has been all about the new command team and assisting in the brigade’s relocation to Schweinfurt,” said Crews. “By September the whole brigade will be here.”

The task of relocating a brigade is not a simple feat. The relocation is also dealing with the issue of Schweinfurt’s impending closure of the garrison.

“I know our mission is not easy, but if we stick with the basics of training and maintaining ourselves, developing our subordinate leaders, care for our Soldiers and always caring for our wounded Soldiers and their families, there is nothing we will not be able to accomplish,” said Obeada.

Petersen stated that he, along with Obeada, plan to build strong bonds with the military and German communities. “I have little doubt that even though the time until Schweinfurt garrison closes is way too short, our

By Katrina M. Leverette, Ansbach Victim Advocate Sexual Assault Program

ANSBACH, Germany -- U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Army Community Service hosted a “Purse-onal” (personal) safety class July 13.

The class primarily focused on teaching basic self-defense techniques and tactics designed to teach people how to better identify potentially dangerous situations, deter assaults and possibly alleviate attacks.

ACS Family Advocacy Program/Victim Advocacy Program offered the class at the Katterbach physical fitness center.

The intent of the class was to raise awareness and enhance community cohesion and self esteem of community members, while giving them some extra tools to consider using if the

situation demanded.

The idea is to identify objects in your purse, or on your person, that could be used against assailants.

The class was instructed by Sifu Armen Minasjan, who has more than 35 years of experience in martial arts, sports psychology, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, gymnastics, Thai Chi and Qi Gong. He is the owner of Harmony Self-Defense System located in Eyb, which is just outside Ansbach.

He was assisted by Agent Israel Barreto-Reyes, who works on USAG Ansbach.

The class was interactive and involved the participants in the maneuvers.

The target audience was women, who are typically the potential victims of sexual assault and/or domestic violence.

The Ansbach Family Advocacy/Victim Advocacy Program is planning a second session for Storck Barracks.

Program aimed at curbing DUIs in need of volunteersBy Nathan Van Schaik, USAG Schweinfurt Public Affairs

SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- An initiative here aimed at curbing the recent spike in drunken driving cases by providing a vehicle pick-up service is in need of volunteers before it can be set into motion, according to its lead organizer.

Lt. Col. Mitch Butterworth has taken the lead in building an Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving chapter in Schweinfurt. Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving, or AADD, will be a private organization whose top priority is to save lives and reduce the rate of DUIs in the Schweinfurt area, said Butterworth, who is also the chaplain for the 7th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade in Schweinfurt.

Modeled after the AADD that operates in Kaiserslautern where it has proved successful there, the program will provide Soldiers consuming alcohol on weekend nights with a free and confidential vehicle pick-up service.

The group — if sufficiently staffed by volunteers — will operate on Friday and Saturday nights, manning a call center for service members to utilize as an alternative to driving home after consuming alcohol.

But before the program begins, Butterworth needs volunteers. Civilians, family members and Soldiers can serve as volunteers. Volunteer board positions include president, vice president, volunteer coordinator and communication coordinator.

Volunteers are also needed to answer phones and drive vehicles for pick up. Volunteer drivers can use their own privately-owned vehicles or vehicles provided by AADD.

Gas is not provided by AADD for those who use their own POV, Butterworth said. If a driver using an AADD vehicle is cited for negligent driving, there is deductible paid by the driver for damages to the AADD vehicle.

To get involved, contact Lt. Col. Butterworth at 09721-96-3292 or via email at [email protected].

BAMBERG, Germany -- Soldiers from the 16th Sustainment Brigade battled it out for the titles of Warrior and Warrior Leader of the Quarter at the 16th Sust. Bde. headquarters here July 23-25. The competition kicked off with a physical fitness test to assess the competitors’ strength and endurance followed by a written exam to test their military knowledge. On day two of the competition, the Soldiers completed a range, a grueling six-mile ruck march and a day and night land navigation course. They faced-off for the last leg of the competition with a formal board in front of a panel of command sergeants major. Pfc. Joseph McNulty, a chemical specialist with the 12th Chemical Company and a native of

Seaside Heights, N.J., took home the Warrior of the Quarter title as a first time competitor and said he was eager to compete. “I wanted to be able to have pride in my unit and come out here and compete and enjoy the competition and hopefully move on and have better experiences and learning.”

McNulty attributes his success not only to his wife for helping him study and preparing for the board, but also to those in his company. “My first-line supervisor, and my platoon sergeant, they make sure I’m ready to go to these boards and that I’m well prepared. They want to see me win as much as I would like to win and bring it back to them.” “I really enjoy my platoon,” McNulty added. “I love getting up in the morning and going to work with them. We have good cohesion as a group.”

mucous membranes, and giving them the appearance of a zombie.

The virus kills infected specimen within 48 hours to 10 days but is harmless for humans. It may be introduced to pet rabbits after direct contact though.

The last myxo epidemic on Bamberg’s garrison grounds was observed approximately ten years ago, Gerber said.

Rabbits should not be killed or hunted by community members.

“The German animal protection law prohibits killing of any kind of vertebrate. Hunting laws state that wild animals can only be killed by certified hunters/possessors of a hunting license

and their appointees. Any other killing of vertebrates is considered poaching,” Rauch said.

“At USAG Bamberg we have the rabbit population under control,” said Angelika Gruneberg at DPW pest control.

Regarding the amount of rabbits at USAG Bamberg, most people will be surprised to learn that the species actually is declining in its native range, with fatal consequences for its highly dependant predators, various birds of prey, little owls and kestrels, but also martens and weasels.

Dead rabbits or other dead animals can be reported to the DPW admin section of the pest control office at 0951-300-7767 for removal.

U.S. Army Europe Public AffairsPress Release

HEIDELBERG, Germany -- The Patriot Express, a Department of Defense-chartered air travel, originating at Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) and transiting to Ramstein Airbase (RAB) offers options for trans-Atlantic travel with pets.

“During the summer months, May through September, most airlines may impose a Summer Heat Embargo and will not allow individuals to transport pets in the cargo compartment,” said Maj. Steven Czap, operations officer with USAREUR G1. “Most Patriot Express flights to BWI are climate controlled and can fly year round without restrictions on breeds, or air temperature and pet travel costs on PE are generally cheaper when compared to commercial carriers.”

According to the Air Mobility Command (AMC) Passenger Policy Branch, there is a minimum fee of $112 for up to 70 pounds and a max fee of $336 for a 150-pound animal to fly on the PE. This calculation is based on the pet and kennel’s combined weight and is broken down into three weight increments.

Commercial carriers calculate pet shipping cost based on cubic feet of cargo space taken up by the kennel and air space around the kennel for proper ventilation. This calculation can cost anywhere from $395 for an average kennel to over $1,160 for the largest commercial kennel to support a 150-pound animal for the same itinerary.

Currently there are 10 pet spaces, cats and dogs only, available on the Tuesday Patriot Express flight primarily used for PCS transportation. Each week there are also three

other Patriot Express flights, (formerly known as Cat B or “Freedom Bird” or “Rotator”) flying Soldiers from the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility that transit through Ramstein AFB to BWI, and these often have temperature controlled spaces for pets, equating up to 40 pet allocations per week.

A very limited quantity of small pets may be authorized to travel in cabin. Pets must be able to fit comfortably in a kennel (hard-sided or soft-sided) no larger than 20 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches high in order to fit under the seat in front of you. Pets must be able to stand up, lie down, and turn around with normal posture and body movements.

When making outbound travel arrangements for pets, service members will have to keep in mind that they will have to make appropriate onward movement arrangements of their pets from BWI to their PCS destination. This may be harder during the summer heat embargo period than the rest of the year.

If there is no space available on the PE flight, travelers still have the option to ship their pets via commercial carrier or through air cargo (both unaccompanied).

Some additional options to off-set the cost of pet shipping include, but are not limited to:

• Shipping a POV to the port of Baltimore in advance of official travel and drive to the permanent duty station or leave address. This option requires coordination with the local transportation office. Source specific guidance is the Joint Federal Travel Regulation (JFTR), Chapter 5, U5435.

• Renting a car to travel from BWI to their permanent duty station and bringing the pet

with them in the rental vehicle, but travelers will not be reimbursed, except for the mileage @ $0.555 per mile when submitting travel voucher to DFAS. Specific guidance is in JFTR U5105.

• Transporting pet via commercial or government air (PE) in advance of travel (non-reimbursable) and have family members receive pets at the arrival airport.

The Patriot Express offers cost-effective pet travel, however, whether flying on the PE or a commercial airline, the cost for shipping pets rest solely on the owner and is not reimbursable by the government.

If PE reservations cannot be made for pets there are commercial pet shipping companies available.

Prices vary depending on destination and size of transport box. The transport box must be large enough for a pet to stand upright and to be able to lie down. Shipping companies may have transport boxes for sale but personally owned boxes may be used as well.

A recent health certificate from a veterinarian and shot records are required for shipping.

The campaign is promoting Soldier and Family fitness and community well-being by showcasing garrison physical activities. It was developed to energize and inspire community members to live a healthy lifestyle.

The program has become an integral part of the physical fitness program for USAG Ansbach, according to Ansbach’s Sports & Fitness Director, Patrick Kabuye.

Sgt. Alva Barnhart, a maintenance sergeant with the 106th Financial Management Company and a native of Lincoln, Neb., said he liked the land navigation portion of the competition the best. “It’s always a challenge to go out there, running through the thick woods trying to find your points.”

Barnhart said he was surprised about winning the Warrior Leader of the Quarter title and always tries to remain humble. He attributes his success, he says to following the message within the Warrior Ethos. “Do what you can, give it your best and don’t quit.”

“The competitors aren’t cutthroat.” They are all there for each other, Barnhart said about what he enjoyed most about the competition. “They help each other out. It’s really nice to go into competitions with people like that. It makes you feel better about yourself and feel better about the competition.”

Army issue antiterrorism awareness messageU.S. Army Message

August marks the Army’s third annual observance of Antiterrorism Awareness Month. Antiterrorism awareness is a critical aspect of our profession, both on and off duty, because the threat of terrorist attack against our nation and our Army is real and ever-present.

Effective antiterrorism measures integrate a multitude of security programs – law enforcement, physical security and operational security – to ensure the continued protection of our installations, standalone facilities and expeditionary forces.

The continued protection of our facilities and our people requires the eternal vigilance of every member of our Army Family and the successful integration of the Antiterrorism Principles - Assess, Detect, Warn, Defend and Recover.

This year’s Antiterrorism Awareness Month will focus on enhancing community awareness

by both leveraging the command information program to educate our Army Family on

the dangers associated with terrorism and highlighting the iWATCH Army program, which helps us recognize and report suspicious activity.

We encourage all commands to conduct training or sponsor events that emphasize the importance of the community in the protection of our Army.

Leaders should promote antiterrorism principles and the significant role Soldiers, civilians and Families play in our own safety.

Together, we will safeguard our installations, facilities and – most importantly – the people who continue to answer our nation’s call to service.

Army Strong!

Recycling Tips1. Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books.

2. Go online to find new or gently used secondhand products. Whether you’ve just moved or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like Bookoo, Craigslist or FreeSharing to track down furniture, appliances and other items cheaply or for free.

Eco-Friendly Tips

Energy-saving Tips1. Replace air conditioner filters. Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause the system to run longer, increasing energy use. Replace filters monthly for maximum benefit.

2. Invest in a new air-conditioning unit. If your air conditioner is on the way out, buy an energy star rated air conditioner.

Water-saving Tips1. Rinsing your dishes in a plugged sink, rather than under a running tap, saves water and is just as easy and effective.

2. When washing dishes by hand use a minimum amount of dishwashing detergent - this will reduce the amount of rinsing required.
