At some date and time …

Frank and Judie’s ancestors were forced through;

Ancestry.com provides additional information…. •Frank was born in Virginia …1815 •Judie was born in Georgia 1810 •Frank and Judie were the parents of 10 children

•4 born in Georgia •4 born in Alabama •1 born in Louisiana • 1 – John… we found no conclusive records

The oral history passed on to us tells us that . . . . . Frank Osborne came from Georgia to Louisiana …

A life time…. from the “door of no return” from Africa to America…. over 6000 miles

from Virginia to St. Rest…. 1200 miles a compelling story …that needs to be told…

as best we can…. so we combine both the oral and published records…

“ to tell OUR story” 6

C. FROM VIRGINIA TO LOUISIANA

God has created man in his own image, and given each a unique gift. Among these gifts is a mind that allows him to think, to dream, and to work to make his dream a reality. As we reflect, certainly, this could be said of the “The Frank Osborne Family”. Frank Osborne came from Georgia, no doubt as a slave, to Arcadia, Louisiana and later settled in the St. Rest community of Jackson Parish near Quitman or Clay, Louisiana. He dreamed of owning land, building a home, and making a life for himself and his family. Frank and Judie Osborne were slave parents of 10 children. Frank Osborne, slave name Frank Hamilton or Howell, decided that his children would not carry the slave master’s name; therefore, took the name “Osborne” after emancipation. It has been suggested that Frank was a traveling salesman/trader and had as many as 4 families along his regular trade route. 1) The Osbornes – in Jackson Parish (the St. Rest area) 2) The Johnsons – in Quachita Parish (near Calhoun) 3) The Nelsons in Caldwell Parish (near Columbia) 4) The Whites in Lincoln Parish ( the Sandhill area)

Following the emancipation, Frank and his family set out to make his dream a reality. As one of the oldest Black families in Jackson Parish, Frank and his family had their work cut out for them. With little money, a lot of back bone and common sense, Frank and his family cleared the forest, planted the crops, cultivated the land and waited for their harvest. The days were long – the nights were short.

As early as 1887, the family owned land, from the regular 40 acres to 640 acres, as was the case with Anderson Wiley. Frank seemed to maintain a very positive outlook on life. He placed high value on man’s education and on his religion. The content of this value seemed to take form as James “Jim” Osborne donated 3 acres of land for the development of the first St. Rest Baptist Church and School. Perhaps following the death of Frank’s first wife Judie, at the age of 67, he was married to Lindy Jones on July 15, 1882. As we look at the family as a unit, we see a family pulling themselves together and working for a common good. Little is known about Judie Osborne …. the only records we have seen are the US Census from the Ancestry.com. Records show: 1) she was born in Georgia - 1810. 2) she was the wife of Frank Osborne 3) she gave birth to 4 children in Georgia (1833 -1848) 4) she gave birth to 4 children born in Alabama (1852 – 1857) 5) she gave birth to 2 children born in Louisiana (1860 – 1867) 6) it is assumed she died in Louisiana… between 1880 -1882

it is known; that she, Judie and Frank are the fore parents

to ALL the Osbornes originating in the St. Rest community… what a grand legacy !

October 1848 - July 31, 1933

C. “The 2nd Generation - Their 10 Children”

Emanuel and wife, Emerline Hicks were parents of 10 children. He often told his grandson, Moses, about his duties as a kitchen-boy the year of emancipation. As a kitchen-boy he gathered wood, water, vegetables, etc . as needed by the cooks. Also he would speculate about how it would be as a field worker had slavery continued another year. He would describe how the whip was used on the boys the first year in the fields. The 13 year old was expected to keep up with the experienced workers. Emanuel and Emerline worked hard and acquired more than 300 acres of land. Much of his land was acquired through the trade of 500 pounds of ginned cotton (1 bale) for 40 acres of land with the local former slave owners (Whitneys, Harveys, etc.) and bought other land for 50 cents an acre.

He was active in the church and community activities. He was truly a

family man. He could saddle a horse on Sunday morning, visit 6 children and be the first person at church.

The House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) and its Door of No Return is a museum and memorial to the Atlantic slave trade on Gorée Island, 3 km off the coast of the city of Dakar, Senegal. Its museum, opened in 1962 and curated until his death in 2009 by Boubacar Joseph Ndiaye, is said to memorialise the final exit point of the slaves from Africa.

Goree Isand, Dakar, Senegal Cape Coast Castle is one of a number of "slave castles", fortifications in Ghana built by Swedish traders, originally for trade intimber and gold, later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include the Portuguese foundation ofElmina Castle (later Dutch) and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and traded in the Americas and the Caribbean. This “gate of no return” was the last stop before crossing the great Atlantic Ocean

Slave market regions and participation[edit]

Major slave trading regions of Africa, 15th–19th centuries

There were eight principal areas used by Europeans to buy and ship slaves to the Western

Hemisphere. The number of enslaved people sold to the New World varied throughout the

slave trade. As for the distribution of slaves from regions of activity, certain areas produced

far more enslaved people than others. Between 1650 and 1900, 10.24 million enslaved

Africans arrived in the Americas from the following regions in the following proportions:[62]

•Senegambia (Senegal and the Gambia): 4.8%

•Upper Guinea (Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone): 4.1%

•Windward Coast (Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire): 1.8%

•Gold Coast (Ghana and east of Côte d'Ivoire): 10.4%

•Bight of Benin (Togo, Benin and Nigeria west of the Niger Delta): 20.2%

•Bight of Biafra (Nigeria east of the Niger Delta, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea

• and Gabon): 14.6%

•West Central Africa (Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola): 39.4%

•Southeastern Africa (Mozambique and Madagascar): 4.7%

Ethnic groups[edit] The different ethnic groups brought to the Americas closely corresponds to the regions of heaviest activity in the slave trade. Over 45 distinct ethnic groups were taken to the Americas during the trade. Of the 45, the ten most prominent according to slave documentation of the era are listed below.[63] The BaKongo of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola The Mandé of Upper Guinea The Gbe speakers of Togo, Ghana and Benin (Adja, Mina, Ewe, Fon) The Akan of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire The Wolof of Senegal and the Gambia The Igbo of southeastern Nigeria The Mbundu of Angola (includes both Ambundu and Ovimbundu) The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria The Chamba of Cameroon The Makua of Mozambique

•Slave Trade From Africa to the Americas • (Slavery in America, an

educator's site made possible by

New York Life) Slave trade routes from Africa to

the Americas during the period

1650-1860 are shown. There

were additional routes to the

New World from Mozambique,

Zanzibar and Madagascar on

the east side of Africa.

Most of the slaves from the east

side were brought to Portuguese

controlled Salvador in the state

of Bahia, Brazil, along with many

other slaves from Angola. Brazil

received more slaves from

Africa than any other country in

the New World. The 500,000

African slaves sent to America

represents 10% of the number

sent to Brazil, and 11% of the

number sent to the West Indies.

According to the estimates of Hugh

Thomas, a total of 11,128,000

African slaves were delivered live to

the New World, including 500,000 to

British North America; therefore,

only 4.5% of the total African slaves

delivered to the New World were delivered to British North America.

Also from Hugh Thomas, the major sources of the 13 million slaves

departing from Africa (see slave ports map, above) were Congo/Angola

(3 million), Gold Coast (1.5 million), Slave Coast (2 million), Benin to

Calabar* (2 million), and Mozambique/Madagascar on the east coast of Africa (1 million). http://www.slaverysite.com/Body/sources.htm
