Gute Nacht (Good Night)
Text by Wilhelm Mller (1794-1827)Set by Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828), from Winterreise, op. 89, #1 (D. 911, #1)
Fremd bin ich eingezogen,
A-stranger was I moved-in,
Fremd zieh' ich wieder aus.
a-stranger move I again out.
Der Mai war mir gewogen
The May was to-me well-disposed
Mit manchem Blumenstrau.
with many flower-bouquets.
Das Mdchen sprach von Liebe,
The girl spoke of love,
Die Mutter gar von Eh',
the mother even of marriage,
Nun ist die Welt so trbe,
now is the world so overcast,
Der Weg gehllt in Schnee.
the path covered in snow.
Ich kann zu meiner Reisen
I can for my journey
Nicht whlen mit der Zeit,
not choose with the time;
I came here a stranger, and as a stranger I leave. The man was kind to mewith many bouquets of flowers. The girl spoke of lovethe mother even of marriage;now the world is overcastand the road covered with snow.
I cannot choose the timeFor my journey,I must find my own way

Muss selbst den Weg mir weisen
I-must myself the way to-me show
In dieser Dunkelheit.
in this darkness.
Es zieht ein Mondenschatten
There moves a moon-shadow
Als mein Gefhrte mit,
as my companion with,
Und auf den weien Matten
and on the white fields
Such' ich des Wildes Tritt.
seek I the animals footprints.
Was soll ich lnger weilen,
Why should I longer linger,
Dass man mich trieb hinaus?
that one me might-drive out?
Lass irre Hunde heulen
Let stray dogs howl
Vor ihres Herren Haus;
outside their master's house;
Die Liebe liebt das Wandern
The love loves to travel
Gott hat sie so gemacht
God has it so made
I must find my own wayIn this darkness.A shadow in the moonlightis my companionand in the white fieldsI look for animal tracks.
Why should I linger any longer, until one drives me away?but stray dogs howlbefore their master's house;love loves to wanderGod has made it so

Von einem zu dem andern.
from one to the other.
Fein Liebchen, gute Nacht!
Fine sweetheart, good night!
Will dich im Traum nicht stren,
I-would you in dream not disturb,
Wr' schad' um deine Ruh',
it-would-be too-bad for your rest,
Sollst meinen Tritt nicht hren
You-shall my footsteps not hear
Sacht, sacht die Tre zu!
Softly, softly the door (I)-shut!
Ich schreibe nur im Gehen
I write just in going
An's Tor noch gute Nacht,
on-the gate still good night,
SchubertSchreib' im Vorbergehen
I-write in going-by
Ans Tor dir: Gute Nacht,
on-the gate to-you: Good Night,
Damit du mgest sehen,
that you might see,
From one to another.Dearest sweetheart, goodnight!
I'll not disturb your dream,it would be a shame to spoil your rest, you shall not hear my footstepssoftly, softly I close the door!I will write, on the gate,as I go by: good night,so that you may seethat I have thought of you.
