ForewordI AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU to the inaugural Cambridge University Undergraduate Surgical Conference.
The CamSurg conference aims to promote careers in surgery and will help you as an individual decide whether a surgical career is the right pathway for you. Over the last decade or so the practice of surgery has undergone a technological revolution with the development of new surgical interventions, widespread application of minimally invasive techniques, the use of robotic surgery, and a much greater emphasis on evidence based surgical intervention. This rapid pace of change looks set to continue and the opportunities that a career in surgery o#ers have never been more exciting.
The pathway to becoming a surgeon is undoubtedly competitive and success requires determination. However the rewards in terms of career satisfaction are immense. The stereotypical surgical personality is a long-outdated concept and the modern surgeon requires a broad knowledge base, excellent
organisational and communication skills and a high level of technical competence. There is a wide range of surgical specialties from which to choose and each o#ers di#erent challenges and opportunities.
As a medical student the only decision you need to make for the time being is whether you want to be surgeon. I am sure you will enjoy this conference and for those who think they have the necessary aptitude I hope it will encourage you to pursue a surgical career.
