Three Notes OnWilliam Congreve

Samuel Johnson on William CongreveBut whatever objections may be made, either to his comic ortragic excellence, they are lost, at once, in a the blaze ofadmiration, when it is remembered that he had produced hisplays before he had passed his thirtieth year ; before other men, even such as are to shine in eminence, have passed theirprobation of literature . Among all the efforts of early geniuswhich literary history records, I doubt whether any one can beproduced that more surpasses the common limits of nature thanthe plays of Congreve.

William Hazlitt on William Congreve

His style is inimitable, nay perfect . It is the highest model ofcomic dialogue. Every sentence is replete with sense and satire, conveyed in the most pointed terms . Every page presents ashower of brilliant conceits, it is a tissue of epigrams in prose, is anew triumph of wit, a new conquest over dullness . There is apeculiar flavour in the very words . His comedy bears every markof being a spirited copy taken off and carefully revised from thesociety of his time, exhibiting all the sprightliness, ease, andanimation of familiar conversation, with the correctness of afinished composition.

Voltaire on William CongreveThe late Mr . Congreve raised the glory of comedy to a greaterheight than any other English writer before or since his time . Hewrote only a few plays, but they are all excellent in their kind. They abound with characters all of which are shadowed with theutmost delicacy . He himself spoke of his works as of trifles thatwere beneath him ; and hinted to me that I should visit him uponno other foot than that of a gentleman . I answered that had hebeen so unfortunate as to be a mere gentleman, I should neverhave come to see him . Licenced Bistro

THEATRE

COMING UP

Major Barbaraby

George Bernard Shaw

directed byAntony Holland

January 15 - 251986

Although hailed as the masterphilosopher of modern drama, forwhom the stage was thebattlefield of ideas andideologies, Bernard Shaw's lastingmerit undoubtedly lies in his near-perfect sense for effective theatre.Gifted with a fast and sure witand an amazing power to createlively characters, his plays haveearned him a secure place in themodern repertory . MAJORBARBARA, first performed in1905, has endured as one of hisfinest achievements . Theencounter between a millionairearmaments manufacturer, hisSalvation Army daughter and herfiance, a professor of Greek, makes for some splendid theatre, that is both thought-provokingand wonderfully funny.
