Cash and prizes will be award-ed Thursday, September 21st in the Dog Tent at the Great Frederick Fair. 50/50 tickets are $1 each, Jar raffle tickets are $1 each, and tick-ets for a ‘meat package’ are $5 each. Attention All Sheep Project Members There are one or two more great projects to prepare for the Great Frederick Fair. Please consider partici-pating in the Shepherds Lead Contest or the Decorat-ed Lamb Contest on Wednesday, September 20th at 6 pm in the Sheep Show Ring. Both of these contests are open to any 4-Her and are great ways to promote your sheep and clothing and/or fashion revue pro-jects. These contests can be a way to fulfill commu-nication or 4-H promotion in your project rec-ords. Sign up to participate at the Sheep Barn Bulle-tin Board at the beginning of the fair. The Decorated Lamb Contest is really fun and allows you to use your imagination to promote sheep, meat, wool or some other important topic that per-tains to the sheep industry. You and your sheep should be decorated or costumed. A short narration will be needed from the 4-Her for the narrator to read as you circle the ring. You can participate in this contest as an individual or as a team. To participate in the Shepherd's Lead Contest you must wear some type of wool clothing and mod-el with a sheep with a short narration about you, the sheep, and your outfit. If you plan far enough in ad-vance you can sew something yourself. If time is running short or you don't know how to sew, you can certainly wear purchased or ready made cloth-ing. A visit to a thrift store can be a great way to find an outfit for this contest. Also, ask older 4-Hers if they have any wool garments you could borrow. In this contest the participants are judged on the outfit, the appearance of your sheep and the informative content of your narration. If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Ransom or any Sheep Superintendent. Stephanie Ransom can be contacted at 240-271-4883 or [email protected] This is always a fun event and we hope more 4-Hers will participate this year.

A Note from Ms. Donielle

Frederick County 4-H had an amazing three weeks of camp this summer at the Frederick County 4-H Camp & Activities Center. Over 200 youth attended 4-H Camp. Brand new for 2017 was a three day Clover Camp for our youngest members. Campers participated in cooking and can-ning classes, outdoor classes and shooting sports, as well as a wide varie-ty of swimming, craft and STEM classes. A special thank you goes to our camp director, Mike Kuster and all the staff including Christy Fuss, Elea-nor Pittinger, Sara Arnold, Ashley Fuss, Terrance Nicholson, Natalie Schi-azzi, and our 15 counselors. Without their months of planning and prep-aration camp would not have been such an awesome experience for our 4-H'ers. Anyone interested in serving as a camp counselor for 2018 can complete a counselor application by January 1st or email Ms. Jennie at [email protected] for more information.

On July 9, 2017, the Robo Rangers of Frederick County, MD did their community service project at the UMD Exten-sion Office. As you know, this year's theme is military. The project had two parts. We chose to donate provisions to the charity, "Any Soldier". The second part of the service project was writing and sending letters to the soldiers. These let-ters were to show them our appreciation for their sacrifice. We wanted them to know that we do not take them for grant-ed. The letters said things like; "Hello, soldier of the U.S. military. I hope you are pleased to know that I appreciate you......." The project was organized by president, Daniel. For more in-formation about "Any Soldier", go to www.anysoldier.com

Fourth of July Parade in Walkersville, MD By: Isaac O’Hara, Reporter of Kaleidoscope 4-H Club

Our club decided to enter a float in the Walkersville Carnival 125th Anniversary Parade on July 4, 2017. As a club, we worked out what our theme would be: “Score BIG with 4-H” and we chose to use basketball as our sport. We painted our sign “Score Big with 4-H!” and hung it on the sides of a large baling cart. Then, we got some red, white and blue balloons, blew them up, and tied them to the cart with some ribbon. Then, we zip-tied some Stars ’n’ Stripes banners around the cart. Finally, we added streamers and decorations to the cart, and then added a basket-ball arcade game into the bailing cart. We had many people from our club helping to decorate and participate in the parade. Some of us walked alongside the float, dribbling basketballs and held signs. Others rode the float and played basketball, threw candy and waved to the bystanders. After one full hour of sweating and perspiration and exhaust billowing out from the tailpipe of the upgraded old-time Chevrolet in front of us, we emerged at the judge’s table, and received a special award for our float!

Valley Urbanites News Summer has been very busy!! From trans-porting pigs to weigh-in, in a dog crate to craft day, it has been a very interesting summer! Club members met in June for their annual picnic and achievement pro-gram. Everyone had a great time as we fellowshipped and recognized our mem-bers. On June 3rd, several members helped to prepare and serve dinner at a local church. On Sunday, June 4th, several members helped Meghan with a run, Todd’s Cause, to raise funds for cancer re-search in honor of her Dad. Members also volunteered to serve drinks at the Mid-dletown VFD carnival June 19-24. Craft Day was also held in June. Members com-pleted many crafts that they could enter at the fairs. A few members cleared the flow-er bed at the 4-H Camp Center. Three members are participating in Horticulture Judging which meets every Tuesday dur-ing the summer. Members are getting excited as they anticipate their involve-ment in the Maryland State Fair and the Great Frederick Fair!!

Craft Day

During the month of June 2017 the Rocky Ridge 4-H Club participated in several activities. The members collected and donat-ed dog and cat food for the local food bank for families with pets. The members of the field day committee pulled together and hosted a club field day at Eylers Stables and Flea Market for the young showmen to practice and participate in a fun filled day. Members of the club brought craft projects and cooking projects to be judged for prizes. Members also brought animal projects to practice for up coming fairs and shows. They played games and enjoyed lunch to-gether. A good time was had by all!! (picture on right)

At the July meeting, the Monocacy Achievers Club worked on preparing for the Great Frederick Fair. We planned our entries and discussed the fair theme and the decorations for the swine exhib-it. Then the club had a water balloon fight and had Slurpees to cool off from the July heat!

Tailwaggers 4-H Club – August Newsletter The Tailwaggers Club hosted their annual dog show on June 3rd, which serves as the county qualifier for the State 4-H Dog Show in August. Fourteen dog/handler teams participated in Fitting & Showing, Obedience, and Rally competition, along with Canine Good Citizen testing (a AKC title program). Sarah & Rosie took Grand Champion in Fitting & Showing, Joanna & Jack grabbed

the overall high score in Obedience, and Olivia & Cali earned overall high score in Rally. Six dogs passed the basic Canine Good Citizen test and earned their CGC ti-tles. Additionally, Mandy’s Maggie sailed through the Advanced CGC test. Many thanks to judges, Cathi DiGiacomo, Rebecca Wilson, Tim Corun, & Dee Lozupone, to CKC for hosting the event, and to Tailwag-ger, Cully who organized & ran the event.

Also in June, the Tailwaggers helped at the 4-H Camp Center to serve dinner to the life guards in training there. On June 25th representatives from the club visited Glade Valley Nursing Home with their dogs to greet the residents. Coming up on Au-gust 29th, eleven Tailwaggers and thirteen dogs will represent Frederick County at the State 4-H Dog Show. The show starts at noon at the Cow Palace Center Ring. If you can, stop by and cheer them on! If you have a dog project and would like to par-ticipate in Dog Bowl, please contact the club. Teams are being made and practices are being scheduled. The 4-H Achievers have been very busy this sum-mer. In June, club members completed their beautifica-tion project by planting flowers around the Masonic sign. Club members also enjoyed an evening of cake decorating with Miss Kim. This is always a fun event, and members enjoy using their imagination to create a unique design.

The club also enjoyed its annual trip to Adventure Park where members had fun riding go-carts, roller coasters, and playing laser tag. In July, members and their families enjoyed food and fellowship at the club picnic. Members are gearing up for a busy fall and preparing for the Great Frederick Fair.

The Lewistown Mt. View 4-H Club celebrated June dairy month meeting at the Thurmont Grange Hall. Thank you to the 4-H members and parents for the speeches pertaining to dairy month. We enjoyed the remaining presentations for our club at this meeting. We played a game with me teams building sundaes and enjoyed eating them!

For our July meeting we had a picnic at Thurmont Sportsman Club. Each family brought two covered dishes, drinks, and the club ordered chicken. We had a short meeting. Because of the threatening storm we were unable to use the pool. Thank you to the Farmer family for giving us the opportunity to target shoot with guns. It was a lot of fun!

In August we plan to meet and work on our decorations for the Frederick Fair. See you at the fair!
