Dear Parents

EventsWe have certainly started the term with gusto with a large number of events crammed into our calendar.

•Primary o The Blessing of the Back Packs was held at both Primary campuses; o The Year 6 Passing of the Baton was combined with the Blessing of the Backpacks at Halls Head and with the House Captains Commissioning at Meadow Springs; Halls Head will be holding their House Captains’ service in Week 8;

o The Meadow Springs Years 4 – 6 Inter-House Swimming Carnival saw Rose House victorious; while the Halls Head Carnival will be held in Week 6; o The Year 6 Canberra Trip (with a parallel excursion in Perth) is underway as I write and I am excited to be able to join the students on Thursday at Taronga Zoo in Sydney (ahead of an Anglican Schools Australia Management Committee Meeting also in Sydney on Friday – I could not have been more thrilled that this meeting coincided so well with the Year 6 itinerary!)

•SecondaryoOurfirstSecondaryAssemblyoftheyearrecognisedourStudentLeadersfor2019,whileatthesecondtheSubjectAwardcertificatesforSemester22018werepresented; o The Year 12 Ball at the end of Week 2 was an amazing evening; while o The Year 7 Orientation Camp was energetic and a lot of fun; o Two Inter-House Swimming Carnivals, held in Week 2, saw a great deal of friendly rivalry, with Jamieson winning the Years 7 – 9 competition, Barrett winning the Years 10 – 12 carnival, and Barrett emerging the overall winner to take the Swimming House Shield for 2019.

• Whole School o The annual Family Picnic and Bush Dance, held at Halls Head on Tuesday 19 February was a wonderful community event on a glorious Summer’s evening (mosquito-free this year!).

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - CURRICULUM

Dear Parents

Welcome back to the new school year, and a particularly warm welcome to our new families and students.

I encourage parents to make sure they can login to SEQTA Engage and to become familiar with it. This is regularly up-dated with course and assessment information. There is also a link to the School’s Careers website as well as other documents such as examination timetables and assessment policies. Parents and students need to be aware of the details in these policies.

Secondary Assessment PoliciesOur educational programme is based on the assumption that barring illness or an extraordinary event, students are in

class every weekday. Students need to attend school daily to succeed. Being in school leads to succeeding in school. Achievement is very sensitive to attendance, and absence of even two weeks during one school year matters. Attendance is also strongly related to graduation rates.

Toensurethatallstudentsaretreatedfairly,aSeniorSecondaryAssessmentPolicyandaLowerSecondary Assessment Policy have been developed which follows the guidelines and commonly accepted practices of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. These policies cover all aspects of assessment and reporting in Years 7 to 12. They are available in SEQTA Engage and SEQTALearn.Pleasetakethetimetoreadthem.

Absenteeism for reasons other than illness or extenuating circumstances is becoming pervasive and is raising concerns in the school community. This has been highlighted several times in the Principal’snotesintheNewsletter, asperthefollowingextractfromarecentSchoolNewsletter:

Holidays During School TimeA number of staff members in both the Primary and the Secondary sections of the School have approached me to express their concern about the number of students who miss school because they are on holidays with their parents.

In the School’s Attendance Policy the following is stated:

• Because staff need to spend time preparing for classes, and because of the time required to prepare in advance, there should be no expectation that school work will be provided, nor should there be an expectation of catch-up work on the student’s return to school;• The School will not be held responsible for any long-term effect of the absence on the student’s overall academic performance (this is especially significant for students in secondary years).

Whileweunderstandthatformanyparentsitmaybedifficulttogetleaveduringtheschoolholidays, I do ask that holidays during school time are kept to a minimum.

The Assessment Policies will be fully implemented from the beginning of the school year and I urge you to encourage your child to attend school every day and support the School.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The Community Bush Dance held last week at the Halls Head campus was a very enjoyable evening with beautiful weather, lots of dancing and great community spirit on display. The Secondary Prefects attended, and it was great to catch up with ex-primary studentswhohavegoneontofulfilleadershiproles. They cooked, danced and contributed hugely to the success of the evening.

This week, many of the Year 6 students are in Canberra for our annual tour of the National Capital. From what I have heard

over the week, there have been many exciting experiences, and lots of fun had as they have visited different venues across Canberra. Ms Robertson joined the tour in Sydney yesterday and enjoyed time at Taronga Zoo with the students and staff. On Wednesday, I enjoyed an excursion to Perth with the Year 6 students who have remained at School, andwevisitedParliamentHouse, theElectoralOfficeandtheWarMemorial.

The House Captain’s Commissioning Assembly, held last Friday morning, was a very special occasion that recognised and blessed our Primary leaders for 2019. My address encouragedthestudentswhowerebeingcommissionedtoreflectuponbeingaleaderand the importance of carrying out their duties with responsibility and courage.

As part of this assembly, batons and messages prepared by the Year 6 students of 2018 were passed onto the current Year 6 students, the written messages the students received shared some insights into being a senior student within the Primary setting.

Dear Parents BEGINNING OF YEAR SERVICES It has been an absolute pleasure to see all our students involved in important services to commence the school year. The Blessing of the Backpacks was a very special occasion for our Pre-Primary to Year 6 students, led by Father Noel. All students set the tone for the year ahead by displaying exemplary behaviour. I want to also acknowledge the Primary students for the respect they showed during the Commissioning of the House Captains service last Friday. This was a special occasion for our House Captains and it was great to see so many of our community members in attendance.I am looking forward to the many occasions ahead where we will get to come together as a Primary School community.

CLUBS LunchtimeClubsarenowupandrunninginthePrimarySchool.Pleasehaveachattoyourchildren about these as we would love to see as many students as possible attending. The options already include a coding club; Numero Club and; some fun physical activity clubs run exclusively by our House Captains during lunchtime on a Friday. I am looking forward to seeing many of our Year 1 to Year 6 students getting to know our House Captains and meeting other students at these clubs.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING I am pleased to announce that our school will be joining forces with many other schools in AustraliatopromotetheNationalDayofActionagainstBullyingonFriday15March.AsImovearound the school on a daily basis, I see constant examples of Frederick Irwin students being kind to each other and of teacher’s doing a great job to educate our students on how we need to be aware of each other’s feelings. We are constantly sending messages to our students on how to communicate and speak up should they be seeing any examples of someone not treating others inafairway.Thisisnotaneasyskilltolearn, andchildrenneedtobespecificallytaughtandeducated on what to do if they do witness anything untoward. Through our pedagogy of focusing on the whole child and adopting a Restorative Practice approach, along with the Friendly Schools programme and Community Circles which run in the classrooms,Iamconfidentweareequippingouryoungchildrenwithmanyskillswhichwillhelpus to better react to any bullying that does occur, but most importantly, prevent bullying. I am more than happy to talk to parents about any of our approaches at any time, so please do not hesitate to see me if you have questions or queries regarding our approaches to help prevent and combat bullying.

BE YOU Overthelastfewyears,ourschoolhasproudlybeenaKidsMatterschool.Throughrecentchanges,KidsMatterhasmergedwithmanyotherprovidersaspartoftheNationalEducationInitiative. The new ‘banner’ which we now sit under is known as ‘Be You’. Throughout this year, I will keep the community informed as to what we are doing as a ‘Be You’ school. One of the goals for the school this year is to focus on staff well-being, and within the Meadow Springs Primary school campus, we are going to continue to focus on how we can offer the best early support for any ofourstudentsshowingsignsofmentalhealthdifficulties.IampleasedtosaythatthePrimaryStaff have already begun some work in this area late last year and will soon continue this work in upcoming staff meetings. If you have any questions or queries regarding ‘Be You’, please do not hesitate to see me.

INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL RESULTS 2019

On Tuesday 12 and Thursday 14 February, Week 2 we held our annual Inter-House Swimming Carnivals at the Mandurah Aquatics Centre. The MARC is an excellent facility and we appreciated very much the support on the day of the staff from the MARC.

We also genuinely appreciate the assistance of both the Mandurah Swimming Club and parents assisting as officialsontheday.Bothsecondarycarnivalsprovedverysuccessfulespeciallytheadventof25meventsforthoseless experienced in competitive swimming.

REVISION & EXAM PREPARATION PROGRAM

APR I L 2019

April Revision ProgramTHIS PROGRAM INCLUDES:

Study Skills: This program contains four hours of teaching broken up into one hour a day for the four days. It focuses on units such as exam techniques, stress management, goal setting and time management.

Essay Writing: The essay writing program consists of four hours of teaching broken up into one hour a day for the four days. It re-teaches students the structure of a critical essay and reinforces the importance of constructing a sound thesis and topic sentences, and revises how to include evidence to justify these claims.

Subject Revision: These classes consist of eight hours of teaching broken up into two hours a day for the four days. The program consists of re-teaching and revision, and is designed to reveal to students how the work they have learnt in term 1 will be assessed in first semester exams.

Exam Preparation

The classes focus on specific topic revision followed by a discussion on how this material is assessed in exam style questions.

There is sufficient time within the eight hours for teachers to model how to answer exam questions successfully as well as time for students to independently practice constructing their own answers. All our senior school teachers have significant marking experience and know what needs to be addressed to ensure students success in exams.

SENIOR AND MIDDLE SCHOOL

F.A.QHow can students be assured that what they have learnt at school will be addressed in the ATARget Program? The answer to this important question is really quite simple.

9 The foundation of our revision classes is the Western Australian curriculum which is the same syllabus guidelines used by the school.

9 ATARget keep their classes small which allows students access to more one-on-one time with their teacher.

9 We also send out a questionnaire to all families participating in the program before the classes begin, to find out exactly what topics and texts students have been studying, and this information is forwarded to the ATARget teachers for inclusion in their programs.

9 This questionnaire also asks families to alert us of any specific weaknesses in the student’s knowledge that may have been identified by the school or the student so that specific area can be re-taught by the ATARget teacher.
