This desk made its home in the original Johnson County Library (the Carnegie building now home to the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum). Kari Liechti of Denver donated it to the library in June in memory of her mother, Pat Gray. Apparently it was part of the furnishings from the 1950s onward, but at some point came to live with her mother in “the Green Room” of the Gray house. Kari said her mother used it as her bookkeeping desk. After Mrs. Gray died in 1989, Kari brought the desk to her home in Denver.

“I brought it with me because it brings back so many memories of the library,” Kari said in a letter to the library earlier this year. “The smell of all the books, the creaking of the old plank floors, the scary basement, the many hours of reading Tarzan, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys.”

We thank Kari for the generous donation that returned this piece of history to the library.

Did You Know? Chiropractors and doctors are warning about the effects of “text neck,” an ache that can develop from looking down at your tablet, phone or e-reader for more than 20 minutes at a stretch. They advocate holding your device at eye level and taking breaks in your electronics viewing. - Health News, Woman’s Day, July 2013

We bid farewell to Lindsey Belliveau, who’s been part of our staff since May 2011. Lindsey has been a hardworking and vital member of the children’s department, showcasing her creative abilities. She’s also been instrumental in running the front desk. We wish Lindsey all the best in her new line of work with the Johnson County School District No. 1.

If you’re looking for a fiction title and can’t find it on our regular shelves, try looking in the Large Print section. We usually don’t keep duplicates of titles, so the one you’re looking for might be on that shelf.

Just a reminder ...

SUMMER READING FINALE IN THE PARK!

Thanks, Lindsey!
