2 Goethe residence and natio nal museum: Goethe lived here for almost 50 years. Almost all of the furnishings and fittings from the last few years of Goethe’s life have been preserved.

3 schiller residence: Friedrich Schiller spent the last three years of his life in this home on the former Weimar Esplanade. Still containing part of the original furnishings, it reflects the living style prevalent in Schiller’s day.

4 Goethe Gartenhaus: Purchased for Goethe by the duke, the poet lived here until he moved to the house on Frauenplan. The house became a shrine for his admirers after his death.

5 wittumspalais: After a fire devastated the residence castle, this became the dowager’s palace for Duchess Anna Amalia. The building, with its two wings, is a striking documentation of royal interior decorating.

6 Belvedere castle and orangerie: The elegant summer palace, built by Duke Ernst August I, was the most important of his 20 hunting and summer palaces. The palace houses an exquisite collection of arts and crafts, including pre-cious porcelain, faïence, glasses and selected furniture.

8 Tiefurt mansion: (5 km) Summer residence of Anna Amalia. The rooms as they present them-

selves today, including staircase, halls and four main rooms on the second floor reflect for the most part the taste of the period around 1800.

9 roman house: The temple-like construction gives the impres-sion of having been built on the ruins of an ancient edifice.

10 Park cave: Towards the end of the eighteenth century, Duke Carl August had a system of tun-nels built in the park, 12 metres (39 feet) deep, for the storage of beer. Nowadays it houses an exhibition on its origins as well as the history of geology.

11 ducal vault, historical cemetery: The ducal vault was

built between 1824 and 1828 in the historical cemetery, commis-sioned by Grand Duke Carl August. The coffins of Goethe and Schiller can be seen at the ducal vault. Moreover, it is the burial place of the ducal family. It represents one of Weimar’s most significant examples of classical architecture.

12 wieland estate in ossmann-stedt: (10 km) Christoph Martin Wieland, one of the most success-

ful writers of the 18th century, bought the es tate in 1797. In Oss-mann stedt, the furnishings and interior decorations of Wieland’s day are presented.

13 Kochberg castle: (35 km) a charming ensemble consisting of a moated castle, a park and a free-standing small theatre, was once a medieval fortress.

14 dornburg castles: (31 km) In the midst of vineyards, situated upon a limestone cliff, the three Dorn-burg castles tower over the valley of the river Saale. The atmosphere of this unique building ensemble already inspired Goethe to visit it regularly.

15 Bauhaus museum weimar: This is a must-see for everyone

who is interested in the Bauhaus. On five floors, the museum offers a completely new parcours, lea -

ding through one of the most significant collections and illus-

16 neues museum weimar: In the new exhibit “Van de Velde, Nietzsche and Modernism around 1900”, outstanding international works of Realism, Impressionism and Art Nouveau can be seen.

17 haus am horn: The model house by Georg Muche is the only Bauhaus architecture that was realised in Weimar and belongs

18 haus hohe Pappeln: Henry van de Velde, a Belgian architect and designer who was art adviser to the Grand Duchy, devised and built his second private home here, after his first in Uccle-Ukkel, Brussels. » closed on Tuesdays

19 nietzsche-archiv: Seriously ill, Friedrich Nietzsche spent the last three years of his life at Villa Silberblick. After his death the archive was established by his sister. The house became a shrine for Nietzsche admirers.

20 house of the weimar republic: Experience the exciting and

contradictory history of the Weimar Republic from 1919 un-

til 1933. This is the first museum in the world that is exclusively dedicated to Germany’s first parliamentary democracy, the Weimar Republic.

museum (City Museum) in the historical Bertuchhaus hosts a permanent exhibition of Weimar’s local history. A focus is also the National Assembly in 1919 and the Weimar Republic.

24 Liszt house: In the summer months from 1869 until 1886, Franz Liszt stayed at the former court gardener’s house located at the entrance to the park

and gave piano lessons to his international students.

25 museum for Pre- and early history of Thuringia: Thuringia, an important cultural region since the very beginning of human settlements, became the home to numerous cultures, ethnic groups and peoples such as the Celts, Germans, Slavs or Franks, which is also a reflection of early European history.

26 Palais schardt: The Palais Schardt with its Goethe Pavilion is a privatly-operated museum with a small café. Goethe met Charlotte von Stein here.

28 acc Galerie weimar: The non-profit organization ACC originated in 1987, before the fall of the Berlin wall. The insti-tution now consists of a gallery and a café and offers a cultural program that includes theater, literature and lecture series.

29 deutsches nationaltheater: The German National Theatre (DNT) is home to the most important theatre and opera ensembles in Thuringia as well as the Staats kapelle Weimar orchestra. Several important political events took place here, the best-known is the founda-tion of the Weimar Republic.
