SUMMER SECTION2 - Summer ’21 Preview, Wednesday, June 30, 2021

Welcome to Iosco CountyIosco County is home to beautiful sparkling Tawas

Bay, where sailboats, fishing craft and jet skis enjoy nature’s gift of Lake Huron.

It’s home to Oscoda, where salmon and trout fisher-men, canoeists and powerboaters take advantage of the local lakes and the famous majestic AuSable River.

And it’s home to the western reaches of the county, which host the heart of the Huron National Forest with its pristine woods, rivers, lakes and streams.

Summer is short but sweet in Iosco County and its residents make the best of it. Here you’ll find festivals, events and celebrations all summer long with restau-rants, taverns, lodging, marinas, golf courses and shop-ping opportunities that you’ll never find at home.

So enjoy yourself. The hospitality’s on us.

HALE – For chills, thrills and excitement there’s no better place to be than at this year’s Iosco County Fair July 26-31 at the fairgrounds in Hale.

Featured during the 77th rendition will be carnival rides, horse and pony pull-ing contests, youth animal judging, a demolition derby, concerts, petting zoo and a rodeo.

The Iosco County Fair will of course have animal exhibit competitions. Exhibi-tors can enter horses, live-stock, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, and rabbits; as well as farm produce, grain, veg-etables, fruit, flowers and plants.

EAST TAWAS – Visi-tors can sip choice Michigan wines and ales and sample local cuisine at the 11th an-nual Tawas Uncork’d Wine, Ale & Food Festival on Aug. 7.

The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at East Tawas Harbor Park.

File photo TANK PRANK – First-time fair goer Conner Hampton, 5, Mio, was treated to one memorable – and hilarious – experience in Hale last Wednesday, during the Live Shark Encounter show. One of the presenters explained that those in the audience always ask if the glass is going to break. So, he sought out a volunteer to test the strength of the tank before kicking off the show. Hampton quickly threw up his hand, not knowing that a gag was in store. When the youngster tapped on the glass, water came spewing out and he made a beeline in the opposite direction. But it was all in fun, and Hampton was even given a real shark tooth as a souvenir for being such a good sport.

There are specials going on for ride-all-day bracelets during the fair.

The Ladies RoomAuSable River Canoe Marathon is a go and now set for July 24-25

File photo DEFENDING CHAMPS – Because COVID-19 restrictions cancelled the 2020 race, Andrew Triebold, front, of Grayling and racing partner Steve Lajoie, left, of Mirabel, Quebec cross the finish line to take first place 2019 AuSable River International Canoe Marathon. The pair finished with a time of 14:15:34 and have won 11 races together and are now the defending champions.

OSCODA – Like many events across the globe, CO-VID-19 forced cancellation of the 2020 Consumers En-ergy AuSable River Canoe Marathon.

This year, the last week-end in July will now mark the 73rd year for what’s been called the most grueling and challenging canoe race in the world: the AuSable River Canoe Marathon.

Competitors in this year’s race, set for July 24-25, will cover 120 miles of the AuS-able’s twists and turns from Grayling to Oscoda, pad-dling more than 50,000 strokes by the time they reach the finish line.

Every year, with 2020 be-ing one of the exceptions, the canoe marathon draws tens of thousands of visitors and race fans to the banks of the mighty AuSable to watch and cheer on their favorite teams, some of them keep-ing track from every bridge to every dam.

The canoe marathon starts

in Grayling at 9 p.m. July 24 when a cannon is fired and paddlers get a running start to launch their boats into the river. This is the begin-ning of their nonstop jour-ney as they continue a 50- to 60-stroke per minute pace all night to Oscoda’s finish line, arriving between 11 a.m. and noon the next day.

The teams will compete for more than $50,000 in prize money, but even more gratifying than the winnings is the enormous sense of pride the winning teams take away with them. Just finish-ing the race is an extremely notable accomplishment in itself.

Typically more than 90 two-person teams compete in the canoe marathon. As of last week, 68 teams have so far singed up to paddle the marathon.

Andrew Triebold, 42, of Grayling and Steve Lajoie, 42, of Mirabel, Quebec, Que-bec teamed up once again to win the 72st rendition of the

race in a time of 14:15:34.Finishing the race in sec-

ond place in 2019, with a time of 14 hours, 20 minutes and 13 seconds, was the St. Bon-iface, Quebec team of Guil-laume Blais, 33, and Samuel Frigon, 23. Third place fin-ishers Chris Issendorf, 37, Dripping Springs, Texas and Pete Mead, 38, Traverse City, had a finish time of 14 hours, 21 minutes and 18 seconds.

The marathon has been called the toughest spectator sport in the world, and for good reason. Many race fans will stay awake for most of the two days while following the race driving from bridge to bridge and dam to dam to cheer on their favorite teams before arriving at the finish line nearly as exhausted as the racers themselves.

For more information on the race, contact the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce or go to the marathon’s web site at www.ausablecanoemarathon.org.

Jamfest is a go for July 24 in HaleHALE - Jamfest 2021, a

festival featuring Christian music, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at the Iosco County Fair-grounds in Hale.

The festival is pesented by IMPACT Ministries, Inc. and also features food ven-dors, a craft and vendor show and a family fun zone.

The music festival will

feature Motor City Revival, dustybonez, The Walkers and Noah Ray Tatum.

Admission to the festival is free.

Blues by the Bay hits 19th renditionEAST TAWAS – During

the dog days of summer, the warm season nears its end and leaves many folks feel-ing the blues.

Don’t fret. A cure for the blues is just around the cor-ner later this summer – the corner of Newman Street and US-23 in East Tawas.

The Tawas Bay Blues So-ciety is hosting its 19th an-nual “Blues by the Bay” Aug. 27-29. The three-day festi-val is located under a large “Blues Big Top” at the Tawas Bay waterfront next to the East Tawas Harbor of Ref-uge.

Last year’s blues festival was cancelled due to the CO-VID-19 pandemic.

This year’s lineup in-cludes Erich Goebel and The Flying Crowbars, Mis-sissippi Heat, Whiskey Bot-tle Blues, Kathleen & The Bridge Street Band, Chicago Rhythm and Blues Kings, Eliza Neals, Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, The Blues Abusers, and The Sax Maniacs.

In addition to the music a variety of vendors will of-fer food during the festival, ranging from Cajun to hot dogs and Polish sausage.

A souvenir button is the admission to all three days of the festival. Cost for this year’s button is yet to be de-termined.

Organized in 2002, the Tawas Blues by the Bay fes-tival is an all volunteer or-ganization dedicated to the promotion, awareness and preservation of blues music and it’s culture.

TAWAS CITY – Tawas Bay will be the picturesque backdrop Aug. 7-8 for one of Michigan’s most prestigious and longest running fine art shows.

Dozens of artisans will exhibit their works during the 60th annual Tawas Bay Waterfront Fine Art Show.

The show is held in the Tawas City Shoreline Park and is being put on by the Tawas Bay Arts Council and Gallery.

Visitors to this year’s fine art show will find arts works and other collectible that will be judged in many media categories.

Each category will receive first through third place rib-bons and cash awards will be presented Aug. 7 in the park gazebo to the top four “Best of Show” exhibitors.

SAND LAKE – The name has changed for this year, but most of the events remain the same.

The annual Sand Lake Festival, now named the All Lakes Block Party, will be held Aug. 13-14.

According to organizers, “due to a lack of time to ob-tain a liquor and gambling license for the annual Sum-mer Festival sponsored by the Men’s Association this seemed like a good idea. It is not intended to replace the festival.”

The block party will still host an array of events for people young and old.

The block party kicks off at noon Aug. 13 with a senior lunch at the Sand Lake Com-munity Hall followed by a euchre tournament. Bingo in the hall for adults begins with the early bird at 6 p.m. A family walk-in bingo will be held in the pavilion from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is fol-lowed at 8:30 with a “Brown Bag Auction.”

An outdoor family movie is slated for dusk on a 24-foot screen. Those attend-ing are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

A parade, with a 50s and 60s theme, starts thing off on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m.

Line-up is a 9 a.m.A family midway will be
