About

Canadian Eyesight Global – formerly Canadian Eyesight International – is a registered Canadian charitable organization comprised of surgeons, doctors, business leaders and numerous volunteers concerned with global blindness.

It is made up of individual Canadians concerned about other people – those in India and such developing nations who are especially vulnerable to blindness as well as those who have already lost their eyesight. In these nations, there are many health and social issues that require attention. Because blindness is caused by many problems, including lack of adequate nutrition, sanitation and trauma, we have the opportunity to bring health in many different forms.

Objective

Canadian Eyesight Global strives to help those who are unable to help themselves and to give people who are blind or visually impaired real support. For over 29 years, we have been helping our community with our partner doctors in India and other developing countries to enhance the facilities and treatment programs, with outstanding results.

Vision

Our Vision is to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020 and to ensure the best possible vision for all people. Canadian Eyesight Global organization is working to remove blindness that is a major health issue among the young, the underprivileged, the aged. Visual impairment in some instances can lead to death. The problem is growing day by day. Every second, one person in the world goes blind. A child goes blind every minute. Yet for three out of four of these people, blindness was completely preventable.

Global trends show millions of people going blind each year. Eighty percent of the worlds blindness is preventable by means of nutrition, sanitation, antibiotics or surgery. Canadian Eyesight’s view is to work toward the elimination of the preventable causes of blindness. Working with other health organizations and various levels of government, we believe this goal is achievable.

How it all began In 1989 the Founder and CEO Anup Singh Jubbal (pictured top left) established the Project Eyesight with the cooperation of Rotary Club of Burnaby-Hastings and the Rotary Club of Lucknow-Khass. Approximately 5,000 people from the rural segments of the Lucknow district received free medical treatment for a wide range of eye diseases. 991 free eye operations were performed in eight Eye Relief Camps organized by Project Eyesight.

The programme was financed by the aid of over a quarter million rupees, provided by the Rotary Club of Burnaby-Hastings, RI District 5040. Human resources, money a materials were also provided by the Rotary Club of Lucknow-Khass.

The then Canadian Deputy High Commissioner in India, H.E. Mr. Gary Smith (pictured middle left) was accompanied by his First Secretary of Development and delegation of six Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Burnaby (pictured bottom left).

Not only was he able to visit the camps first hand and make an appraisal of the enormity of medical problems in rural India, but he could also witness the significant contribution Project Eyesight 1989 was making.

Founder, President & CEO

Canadian Eyesight Global

Anup Singh Jubbal, MSM is a businessman from British Columbia. As the chairman of the a Rotary Club’s International Committee, Mt. Jubbal was instrumental in raising large sums of money in 1988 for the International Polio Plus Fund Raising Campaign.

He is he founder, driving force and chair behind Project Eyesight-India. Since 1989, he has been sponsored and supported by Rotary International, CRCID/CIDA, Sikh Temples and the Indo-Canadian community in Canada.

This generous support has enabled sight restoration for countless patients. Canadian Eyesight Global (formerly Project Eyesight-India) has successfully sponsored and completed thousands of free cataract surgeries and treated an unlimited number of people for avoidable blindness in rural parts of India, since 1989.

Born in Lucknow, India, Mr. Jubbal made the long trek to Canada in 1968 where he initially resided in the beautiful city of Kamloops. He moved to Greater Vancouver in 1986.

As a business man, Jubbal’s primary focus has been property investment and development and importing-exporting. Between the years 1974 and 1980, Mr. Jubbal travelled the globe three times in the pursuit of import-export opportunities. He also managed to find time to take part in Canadian Importers Association trips to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines and China. He participated in trade fairs in Chicago, Iran and Kuwait.

His work in property investment and development was based mainly in Kamlooops before. Later he shifted the focus of his efforts to importing and trading goods that were for same throughout Canada.

The desire to help others inspired Mr. Jubbal at a young age, drawing him to groups such as Boy Scouts. During his time in India, he was a Saint John Ambulance attendant, and he has been a Rotary member since 1986. He raised large sums of money n 1988 to eradicate polio, a devastating disease that affects children in numerous countries.

In 1989, Jubbal founded an organization committed to preventing blindness among impoverished citizens in rural India, and has

dedicated his life to this noble cause for the past 29 years.

Originally named Project Eyesight-India, Jubbal continues to take he lead as President and CEO of its successor organization - Canadian Eyesight Global. Supported by Rotary International, Rotary Clubs in Canada and India, CRCID/CIDA Canada, local eye hospitals, and tenacious volunteers, Jubbal has worked tirelessly to provide care for those in need. Numerous people have been treated, so far, for avoidable blindness, and thousands of free cataract surgeries have been performed in rural sections of India.

Jubbal and Canadian Eyesight Global are currently in the process of establishing an eye hospital and Blindness Prevention Care Centre near Amritsar, India.

To promote Canadian Eyesight Global’s efforts, Mr. Jubbal has organized booths at Rotary International Conventions in Birmingham (2009), Montreal (2010), New Orleans (2011) and Bangkok (2012)

Blindness is defined as the state of being sightless. A blind individual is unable to see. In the strictest sense, the word blindness denotes the condition of total blackness of vision including a person’s inability to distinguish darkness from bright light in either eye. The terms “blind” and “blindness” have been modified to include a wide range of visual impairment. Today, the term “blindness” is frequently used to describe severe visual decline in one or both eyes, with some residual vision maintained. Vision impairment, or low vision, means that even with eyeglasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery, an individual doesn’t see well. Vision impairment can range from mild to severe. Between 300 million and 400 million people worldwide are visually impaired due to various factors. Of this group, approximately 50 million people are totally blind. Approximately 80% of blindness occurs in people over 50 years old.

The picture on the left depicts normal vision. The next page depicts the effects of disease on vision. Imagine the millions of people worldwide who are living daily with such impaired vision or total blindness.

Blindness and low vision

285 million people around the world are visually impaired; 40 million are blind and 246 million suffer from low vision. Global estimates show that, without intervention, the number of blind individuals will increase to 76 million by the year 2020. This represents one of the most serious health issues facing the world today. Blindness affects not only individuals and their families, but whole communities as well. Fortunately, there is good news – 80 percent of blindness in the developing world can be successfully treated or prevented.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve is damaged in a characteristic pattern. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness throughout the world. It can permanently damage vision in the affected eye(s) and lead to blindness if left untreated. Individuals over 40 who are currently living with glaucoma might not even be aware they have it, as symptoms may not be present.

Cataracts

A cataract manifests as clouding in the eye. It develops in the crystalline lens or in its envelope, also called the lens capsule. The lens is located near the front of the eye and

focuses on the retina, at the back of the eye, to form the image we see. A cataract may cloud the entire lens, or affect just a small part. Cataracts vary in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstruct the passage of light. Age-related cataracts are responsible for 48% of world blindness, which represents about 18 million people. When developed in an elderly individual, the cataract is known as a “senile cataract”, whereas, in children, it is called a “congenital cataract”.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a medical condition which usually affects older adults. It results in a loss of vision in the macula and damage to the retina. It is a major cause of blindness and visual impairment in older adults. The macula is the central area of the retina, which provides the most detailed central vision. This term generally refers to Age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD).

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is caused by complications related to diabetes, which can eventually lead to blindness. It is an ocular manifestation of systemic disease which affects up to 80% of all patients who have had diabetes for 10 years or more. Diabetic retinopathy is the result of microvascular retinal changes. It usually affects both eyes. People who have diabetic retinopathy often don’t notice changes in their vision in the disease’s early stages. But, as it progresses, diabetic retinopathy usually causes vision loss that, in many cases, cannot be reversed.

Refractive error

A refractive error, or refraction error, is an error in the eye’s ability to focus on light. It is

a common factor in the reduction of visual acuity. An eye that is affected by refractive error is said to have ametropia, or be ametropic, when viewing distant objects. The word “ametropia” can be used interchangeably with “refractive error” or “image formation defects”. The diagnosis of a refractive error is usually confirmed by an eye care professional during an examination using an instrument called a phoropter.

Trachoma

Trachoma is the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness. Caused by a bacterial infection, trachoma spreads easily through contact with eye discharge from infected people on hands, towels and clothing, as well as through direct transmission by flies.

River Blindness

Onchocerciasis is often called “river blindness”. It occurs in central Africa and Central America near flowing rivers and streams, where the species of black flies that transmits the disease is most often found. Bacteria from the flies allow parasitic worms to enter a person’s bloodstream, where the worms can live up to 14 years. Symptoms of river blindness often show up 1 to 3 months after infection.

Childhood blindness

Data collected from various sources presents the most up-to-date information on childhood blindness, and suggests that 5% of worldwide blindness involves children younger than 15 years of age. In developing countries, 50% of the population falls within this age group. Using the World Health Organization’s criteria, there are over 3.0 million children worldwide who are blind.

“Three years ago when I first lost my eyesight, and when, I just seen minutes my whole world became dark, I did not know how to live as a blind person. I did not even know if it was possible for me to live as a blind person.

But here I am, after three years, pursuing my studies and working to achieve my goals very slowly.

Yes, it is not easy, but I realized I have lost my sight, not my vision.

I also realized how I can feel the world in a different way. There are a lot of uncertainties and challenges that come along with the blindness, but I guess, as humans, we are supposed to overcome all the challenges.

I told myself I won’t let anyone else decide how I will live the rest of my life.

I always believed in living a meaningful life and I have decided to try my best to do that.”

“Look Beyond Yourself” 23 JULY 2014

I am very happy to know that the Canadian Eyesight Global is organizing a Gala Dinner to celebrate 25 years of their existence in service of humanity and promoting the awareness for available Blindness .

It has been my pleasure to be Honorary Director on the Board of the organization and I do consider it to be a privilege having know the remarkable work that had been done in the past.

I remember very well that almost about the time of my being Rotary International President, I got to know Mr. Anup Singh Jubbal and that was the start of work towards the cause of promoting cataract surgeries in India and other places of need. His one-man dedication and commitment brought many other like-minded humanitarians to support the cause and the organization started blossoming. Such progress is indeed remarkable and I recognize that the top state and national leaders in Canada, other philanthropists have blessed this organization in its objective and have thus added to the strength and resources for enhancing the service capabilities. I suppose that this event is the celebration of the achievements of the past as also challenges for the future for increased participation and awareness.

I want to thank Mr. Anup Jubbal and all other team members for looking beyond themselves and promoting the cause for better quality of life and human dignity around the world.

I wish the event all success and the organization to rise to new heights of service.
